What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with 1080p30 SDR, H.264 using CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 Kbps, and Rec. 709. Choose a bitrate within YouTube’s 5–14 Mbps recommendation for 1080p30, then test the complete setup on the connection and computer that will run the stream. If either cannot sustain it, move to 720p30 and test again. A 24/7 stream needs stable upload and encoding performance, not just a copied OBS preset.
Recommended OBS starting settings
These settings are a practical starting profile for an SDR rain ambience stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the bitrate ranges below; it does not guarantee that a particular Indian connection or PC can sustain them.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 at 30 fps | A reasonable balance for a rain scene. YouTube accepts up to 60 fps, but a mostly static scene may not benefit visibly from the added frame rate and encoding/upload load. |
| Video encoder rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. |
| Video bitrate | Choose within 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 | Use a value your upload can sustain with headroom; the top of the range is not a universal target. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps; 44.1 kHz | YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo. Keep OBS’s audio sample rate consistent with the project and source. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR | The normal non-HDR path described in YouTube’s guidance. |
| Streaming transport | RTMPS | YouTube recommends the encrypted version of RTMP. |
| Latency | Normal | A sensible stability-oriented choice when the ambience stream has little live audience interaction. |
For a lower-resolution fallback, YouTube recommends 3–8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. Rain footage can look simple, but source detail, scene changes, overlays and audio all affect the result. Validate the picture and sound at the bitrate you select rather than assuming static imagery needs little bandwidth.
Configure OBS and YouTube Live
- Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select or create the scheduled stream. Confirm the intended privacy setting and stream key. Treat the key like a password; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Set the video output. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 1920×1080 and the frame rate to 30 fps if your source and computer can sustain them. If performance is marginal, use 1280×720 at 30 fps.
- Set encoding. In Settings > Output, select the streaming output and configure H.264 with CBR. Set the bitrate within the YouTube range for your selected resolution and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS labels and available encoder choices can differ by version and hardware; select a hardware or software encoder only if it can run reliably on your machine.
- Set audio. Choose AAC stereo at 128 Kbps. In Settings > Audio, use a sample rate consistent with the source and project; YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio.
- Set color and stream connection. Use Rec. 709 for SDR. In OBS’s stream configuration, connect to YouTube using RTMPS and the correct stream key. Do not share the key in screenshots, chat or public documents.
- Choose latency. Use normal latency for an ambience stream without much interaction. YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds at low latency and less than five seconds at ultra-low latency. Lower latency can increase buffering and makes network ingestion problems more visible to viewers.
- Test before going live for the long run. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Use the actual rain video, audio, overlays and encoder settings; YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream.
Choose resolution and bitrate for the connection
Run an upload-speed test at the location and time the stream will operate. Upload capacity matters; download speed does not show whether the stream can send video reliably. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload capacity beyond the total stream bitrate. Treat that as guidance, not a guarantee: congestion and other people using the connection can reduce available capacity.

| Profile | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps | Use when the source and PC support 1080p30 and the connection sustains the chosen bitrate with spare upload capacity. |
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps | Use as a fallback if the connection or encoder struggles at 1080p30; retest the entire stream after changing profile or bitrate. |
For example, a 1080p30 stream configured at 6 Mbps calls for at least 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity under YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance. That arithmetic is not a promise of uninterrupted service; a speed test can miss later congestion or fluctuation. Start conservatively within the applicable range and observe performance during a representative test.
Keep a local 24/7 stream stable
- Monitor OBS and YouTube together. Watch the Live Control Room stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame counter. OBS Project says that if dropped frames are increasing while the connection indicator is yellow or red, the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.
- Respond to dropped frames. Reduce the bitrate, investigate the network path, or switch to 720p30, then test again. Do not keep increasing bitrate to solve a connection problem.
- Check encoding performance over time. Use the representative scene, overlays and audio, and watch for sustained encoder overload or thermal performance issues. Whether hardware or software encoding is preferable depends on the actual GPU/CPU and its ability to run continuously; there is no single best encoder for unspecified hardware.
- Plan for interruptions at home. A UPS can help bridge a brief power cut for the PC and network equipment, but runtime depends on load and it cannot prevent an internet outage. It is optional hardware, not an OBS setting or an uptime guarantee.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home PC and connection to be responsible for a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the video without requiring your computer to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise; connection indicator turns yellow or red | The connection to YouTube is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. | Reduce bitrate, check the network path and competing traffic, or move to 720p30. Test again while monitoring YouTube stream health. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health despite a good download-speed result | Download speed does not establish upload capacity, and a test may not capture congestion during the stream. | Test upload at the operating location and time; leave the recommended 20% headroom and retest during typical network use. |
| Video or audio stutters after several hours | The real workload, network fluctuation, or sustained encoder performance may differ from a short idle test. | Run a longer representative test with the intended video, audio and overlays. Observe dropped frames and encoder load; lower resolution or bitrate if needed. |
| Stream connects to the wrong broadcast or fails to start | The wrong scheduled stream, stream key or privacy selection may be active. | Check the selected broadcast and privacy setting in YouTube Studio, then verify OBS uses its matching stream key. Reset the key if compromised. |
| Viewers report buffering on a low-latency stream | Lower latency can increase buffering and leaves less tolerance for ingestion problems. | For a non-interactive ambience stream, switch to normal latency and assess viewer playback again. |
YouTube rights and stream content
Use rain recordings, music and other visuals only when you have the rights or permission needed for live streaming. A 24/7 loop does not make copyrighted material safe to use, and permission to upload a recording does not necessarily establish permission for every use or distribution. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements in YouTube Studio before scheduling; this setup guide does not determine whether a particular recording is licensed or eligible for monetization.
