For a 4K/60fps YouTube Live stream, set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use CBR, set keyframes to 2 seconds, and start with YouTube’s codec-specific recommended video bitrate: 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Treat those as targets, not guarantees: the gaming PC and sustained upload connection both need to handle the full workload. Test a representative gameplay scene and check OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before going live.

YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC as minimum 2160p60 bitrates. Those are lower bounds, not quality targets; begin with the recommended rate for your codec and test delivery. The page does not state a publication year in the result reviewed, so check its current table before configuring a stream.
Choose a codec and encoder OBS can actually use
H.264: the broad fallback
YouTube accepts H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. H.264 is the practical fallback when the newer codecs are not supported by the GPU encoder, OBS version or YouTube ingest workflow you are using. For 2160p60, YouTube’s current live table recommends 50 Mbps.
AV1 or H.265/HEVC: lower recommended bitrate
YouTube lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends 35 Mbps at 2160p60. Confirm your hardware, OBS version and YouTube workflow support the codec before selecting it; codec availability depends on the encoder and software in use. For HDR, YouTube specifically recommends HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Find the encoder controls in OBS
In OBS, open Settings > Output, choose Output Mode: Advanced if needed, then configure the streaming encoder, rate control, bitrate and keyframe interval. Exact labels and available options vary by OBS version, codec and GPU generation. Select a hardware encoder supported by your GPU when available, then check that the chosen codec is also accepted by YouTube’s current ingest workflow.
For NVIDIA NVENC, OBS’s guide provides a starting combination of CBR, 2-second keyframes, a quality-oriented preset, high-quality tuning, two-pass quarter-resolution multipass and an appropriate codec profile. That guide dates to 2018, so do not treat its labels as a universal current prescription: modern NVENC choices vary with GPU generation and OBS version. OBS documentation dated 2024-08-21 for options introduced in OBS 31.0 describes adaptive quantization as equivalent to the earlier Psycho-Visual Tuning concept, and notes B-frame-as-reference support for HEVC/AV1. Its Ultra High Quality tuning is not recommended for gaming content and significantly reduces throughput. Use a suitable current quality preset instead of enabling Ultra High Quality by default.

Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate to fit the whole setup
A bitrate recommendation does not mean your internet connection can sustain it or that your PC can render a game and encode simultaneously at 4K60. The bitrate figures above are for video; leave additional room for audio and normal network variation. A one-time speed test is only a starting check, not proof of reliable long-duration delivery.
YouTube’s separate upload-encoding page, accessed in 2026, recommends 53–68 Mbps for high-frame-rate SDR 4K uploaded videos. That figure is for uploaded video files, not live ingestion, so it should not replace the live-stream rates in the settings table.

If your connection cannot consistently sustain the recommended live bitrate, reduce bitrate and/or output resolution. If the game or encoder struggles, consider 1440p60, a faster encoder preset, a lower frame rate, or less game-rendering load. YouTube’s live table recommends 34 Mbps H.264 or 24 Mbps AV1/HEVC at 1440p60. Choose the fallback based on observed stream health and gameplay performance rather than assuming 4K60 will work from the settings alone. YouTube also says its low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 4K/2160p; those streams are optimized for normal latency.
Configure SDR color or use a separate HDR workflow
SDR
For SDR, use Rec. 709, 8-bit, progressive video. In OBS, match the video color space and range to the intended SDR output path; settings available and their labels may depend on the version and encoder. Verify the result in a test stream rather than changing color controls without checking the output.

HDR
HDR is a separate workflow, not an automatic improvement to an SDR setup. YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC over RTMP(S) for HDR and 10-bit depth, and does not support AV1 for HDR. The game, encoder, OBS configuration, YouTube ingest and viewers’ displays all need to support HDR for the intended result. Do not enable HDR just because the game offers it.
Test the complete stream before going live
- Confirm compatibility and protect the key. Check that OBS, your GPU driver, selected encoder codec and YouTube stream key work together. Enter the stream key in OBS’s stream settings, and never show it on screen or share it; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Use actual gameplay movement, overlays, microphone and game audio rather than a static desktop. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check both ends. Watch the OBS Stats dock for rendering or encoding overload and YouTube Live Control Room for ingestion health and messages. Official guidance supports testing and monitoring, but there is no universal pass threshold for every gaming PC.
- Adjust based on the symptom. If network frames are lost, check sustained upload stability and lower bitrate or output resolution. If rendering or encoding overload appears, try a faster preset, lower output resolution or frame rate, or reduce game-rendering load.
- Repeat with realistic conditions. Test a representative gameplay scene long enough to expose instability, then recheck the current YouTube encoder table because codec support and recommended rates can change.
Copyright, stream keys and YouTube channel rules
Use only gameplay, music, overlays and other material you have the rights or permissions to broadcast. A game’s soundtrack or licensed in-game content can trigger a claim even when you own the game; check the publisher’s streaming policy and use a streamer-safe music option when needed. A private or unlisted test is useful for diagnosing the technical stream, but it does not grant rights to the material or guarantee that a later public broadcast will avoid a claim.

Keep your stream key private and use the correct key for the intended YouTube channel and broadcast. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings and update OBS before streaming again. Copyright claims, restrictions or strikes can affect a broadcast or channel; review YouTube’s current policies for your account and content rather than assuming that a technical test settles eligibility.
