For one local rain video, add it to an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. This restarts the file when playback finishes. To make the result feel continuous, also decide how the source should behave when it is hidden, and check whether the clip’s ending joins cleanly to its beginning.
Set up a looping rain video in OBS
- In the OBS scene where you want the rain video, add a source and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then select the local video file. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among supported video file types. Supported extensions alone do not guarantee a seamless loop.
- In the source properties, turn on Loop. OBS defines this setting as playing the file again once playback has completed; its documented default is off.
- Check the preview and listen to the audio, if the clip has any. Let it play through the end and into the next repetition so you can judge the actual join.
If the end-to-start transition jumps, choose or edit a clip whose final frames and audio lead naturally into its opening. OBS’s supported-format list does not identify a format or encoding that guarantees a gapless join.
Choose what happens when the source is hidden
Restart playback when source becomes active
This option restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. OBS lists it as on by default. Leave it on if you want the rain to start from the beginning whenever you return to that scene; turn it off if you prefer playback to keep its place. For continuous playback across scene changes, keep the source active in the relevant scene rather than making it inactive.
Close file when inactive
This unloads the media while the source is hidden or absent from the current scene, which frees memory. OBS warns that the source may take a short time to appear again after it reloads. Leave the option off when you want a quick return to the picture; consider turning it on if reducing inactive memory use matters more than avoiding a reload delay.

Use hardware decoding when available
OBS says this can let the GPU decode certain file types when suitable hardware decoding is available. It is off by default in the documented guide and in the source implementation. Whether enabling it helps depends on the file’s codec and the computer’s available hardware; the documentation does not establish a performance improvement for a particular rain video.
Show nothing when playback ends
This option hides the source automatically after a file finishes. For a repeating video, confirm that Loop is enabled; that is the control that repeats the file after completion.

Use a playlist instead of one file
For a single rain clip, Media Source has the direct Loop control. If you want several clips to play as a playlist, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC source to appear. Choose based on whether you want one repeating file or a sequence of clips.
Check the loop and troubleshoot playback
- The video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is on. The documented default is off.
- The rain restarts when you return to a scene: Review Restart playback when source becomes active. Turn it off if you want playback to retain its place, and keep the source active in the relevant scene if it must continue across scene changes.
- The picture is delayed after returning: Check whether Close file when inactive is enabled. OBS notes that reloading an unloaded file can take a short period.
- The loop has a visible or audible jump: Inspect the end and beginning of the clip, including its audio if present. Pick a clip with a better-matched join; OBS does not promise seamless looping for any listed format.
- You cannot find VLC Video Source: Install VLC, which OBS requires for that source, then check the source list again.
- Hardware decoding does not appear to help: Its usefulness depends on the file codec and available hardware. The documented settings describe the option, not a guaranteed speed or quality gain.
