The best browser party game depends on what your group wants to do: draw and reveal, compete at guessing, give team clues, or play a host-run collection of mini-games. For a free, link-first starting point, try Gartic Phone; for rounds and scores, use Skribbl.io; for team word clues, open Codenames Online. Choose Jackbox when one person can run a purchased game and share its screen.

Quick picks by group and setup

Game Best fit How guests join What to know
Gartic Phone Groups that like drawing, writing prompts, and seeing how a message changes as it passes around. Use the game page and keep a voice call open. The official instructions recommend inviting friends to a voice call. They do not state a maximum group size.
Skribbl.io Competitive draw-and-guess rounds with points. Create a private room and invite the group. The official page describes it as a free multiplayer drawing-and-guessing game and lists custom word and room options.
Codenames Online Teams that enjoy clue-giving over a shared word grid. Share the room URL; use separate audio or video chat if desired. The publisher presents it as the classic board game played online. Buying the tabletop game is not required for online play.
Jackbox Party Packs A host who can run a purchased game and make its screen visible to everyone. Guests join on phones or other web-enabled devices. Jackbox says guests need internet access and a view of the host screen, but do not need an app or their own purchase. Pack and storefront availability can vary.

Which browser party game should you choose?

For drawing telephone and a big reveal: Gartic Phone

Gartic Phone passes a chain of prompts through writing, drawing, and description. Each player starts by writing a quirky sentence, draws a sentence they receive, and describes a resulting drawing; the group then sees how the chain transformed. It works well when the fun is in the unexpected reveal rather than a strict competition. The official game instructions recommend calling friends on a service such as Discord or Zoom: Gartic Phone.

For familiar drawing competition: Skribbl.io

In Skribbl.io, one player draws a chosen word while the others guess. Players earn points for correct guesses, and the highest score wins. The official site describes private-room creation, custom word lists, drawing controls, and room-owner moderation tools, which can help a group tailor a session: Skribbl.io. Its mobile-support feature was documented in a news entry dated November 9, 2022; check the live game for current device behavior and interface details.

For team clues and deduction: Codenames Online

Codenames Online suits groups that want to split into teams and give clues about a shared grid of words. The official instructions say to enter a nickname, choose settings, connect with friends through audio or video chat, and share the room URL: Codenames Online. Keep chat open separately if your group wants to discuss clues by voice.

For a host-run collection of party games: Jackbox

Jackbox Party Packs are collections of five games, according to the company’s FAQ. One person runs the game on a host device and shares that screen; other players use web-enabled devices to join. Guests need an internet connection and a view of the host screen, but Jackbox says they do not need an app or an additional purchase. The host must obtain and run the game, so check Jackbox’s current store listing for pack availability and the platform that fits your setup: Jackbox Games.

How to play browser party games over Zoom or Discord

  1. Choose the game that fits the call. Gartic Phone explicitly recommends a voice call; Codenames Online’s instructions also suggest connecting with friends through audio or video chat. For games that do not provide voice chat, keep Zoom, Discord, or another call open separately.
  2. Start the game and create or open a room. Follow the game’s own join flow. For Codenames Online, the instructions include choosing a nickname and settings; Skribbl.io offers private-room creation.
  3. Send the right invitation. Share the room URL or the game’s invite details with players. Codenames Online specifically uses a shared room URL. Avoid assuming every game uses the same link, PIN, or room-code method.
  4. Make the game visible when it needs to be. With Jackbox, share the host’s game screen in the call so guests can see it while they join on their own devices. In link-first browser games, each player generally follows the game invitation on their own device; check the game’s live instructions for its current flow.

What to check before inviting everyone

  • Device and browser: Compatibility can change, and the official pages do not establish a universal browser or device guarantee for every game. Check the live game page on the devices your group plans to use.
  • Room size: Do not rely on a player cap unless the game owner states it. Gartic Phone’s official page reviewed here does not publish a maximum group size.
  • Accounts and purchases: The listed games have different host and guest arrangements. Jackbox requires a host to run a purchased game, while guests do not need their own purchase or app. Check each game’s current entry flow rather than assuming the same account requirements.
  • Free versus host-pays: Skribbl.io is described by its official page as free. Jackbox is the paid-host model described by its FAQ. Verify current storefront details, since prices and platform availability can change.
  • Turns and waiting: Drawing and guessing games take turns, while Gartic Phone’s appeal comes from passing a prompt chain. Consider whether your group enjoys watching others play or prefers everyone to contribute continuously.

Can you play without buying anything?

For the games covered here, Skribbl.io is explicitly described by its publisher as free, and Codenames Online is presented as the online version of the classic board game rather than a play mode that requires buying the tabletop copy. Jackbox works differently: the host runs a purchased game, while guests can join without another purchase or an app. Check the game owner’s current page for any changed access terms.

Can you play on a phone browser?

Jackbox’s FAQ says guests can use a smartphone or another web-enabled device, provided they have internet access and can see the host screen. These details do not establish identical compatibility for every phone, browser, or game; check the live game and test the joining flow before a large group session.
