The best open-world co-op game depends on what your group wants to do together: build freely in Minecraft, survive and explore in Valheim, or tackle focused combat runs in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. They offer different kinds of multiplayer, so compare group size, world persistence, and platform compatibility before choosing.
At a glance: which game fits your group?
| Game | Best fit | Co-op shape | Group size established by official sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Building, creativity, and a world you shape | Shared worlds, local split-screen, LAN, and private-server options vary by edition and platform | Up to four players on screen in supported split-screen play; other modes vary by setup. Minecraft |
| Valheim | Survival, crafting, and exploration | Shared survival world; players can host or use a dedicated server | Solo or up to nine other players (ten total), according to the official site. Valheim |
| ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN | Combat-focused cooperative sessions | Three-player expeditions through an evolving world, rather than a continuously shared sandbox | Three players, as described on the official product page. Bandai Namco |
This is a shortlist based on official feature information, not a hands-on ranking. The games are not interchangeable: choose based on the kind of co-op loop your friends actually want.

How the three games play together
Minecraft: the flexible sandbox
Minecraft is the strongest fit for a group that wants to make its own goals. Build a base, explore, or turn a shared world into a project that develops over time. The official overview lists couch co-op, shared custom worlds, LAN play, local private servers, and console split-screen; availability depends on edition and platform. Its split-screen information says up to four players can play on one screen at the same time. Minecraft multiplayer options
Check the edition and device pairing before buying or setting up a world. Minecraft’s friends information distinguishes Bedrock Realms from Java Realms, and multiplayer options are not identical across editions. A compatible controller can help with supported couch co-op, but a controller is not a universal requirement for online play. Minecraft friends and Realms information

Valheim: survival and a shared world
Valheim suits friends who want to explore, gather resources, craft, and survive together in a world they can return to. Its official site says you can play alone or with up to nine other people. That is a ten-player total, not nine friends in addition to you. Valheim
For players on different platforms, the official crossplay FAQ describes joining a server with a join code. It also says Xbox players can join a dedicated server when crossplay is enabled, and that the Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Steam versions receive updates at the same pace. These details make cross-platform groups possible in documented setups, but server configuration matters. Valheim crossplay FAQ
Current release status can change: the official news feed reported in June 2026 that the team had announced a 1.0 release date. Check the latest official announcement for the current status rather than relying on an older description of the game as early access. Valheim news

ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN: coordinated three-player runs
ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN is a standalone adventure set in the ELDEN RING universe. Bandai Namco describes it as an evolving three-player co-op experience: Nightfarers explore Limveld over two days and hunt a Nightlord. The changing world and session structure make it a better match for friends who want a defined cooperative objective than for a group seeking one persistent shared base. Official product page
The official launch guide lists PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of 30 May 2025. Availability on those platforms does not establish crossplay; the official sources cited here do not confirm that players on different platforms can form a party together. Bandai Namco launch guide

- Decide whether you want persistence or short sessions. Minecraft and Valheim support shared-world play in different ways; NIGHTREIGN is built around changing expeditions.
- Count the whole party. Valheim’s stated maximum is ten players including the host. NIGHTREIGN is designed for three. Minecraft’s documented four-player figure is specifically for supported split-screen, not every multiplayer mode.
- Match platforms and multiplayer mode. A game being available on several platforms does not prove crossplay. For Valheim, consult the crossplay FAQ and confirm the server setup; for Minecraft, verify edition compatibility and platform-specific options.
- Choose the setup your group will maintain. Minecraft offers several ways to connect, including LAN and private-server options. Valheim groups may use a server or join code. NIGHTREIGN centers on joining a three-player session.

Grounded and Sea of Thieves also appear in Microsoft’s US online co-op catalog, alongside Valheim. That catalog listing alone does not establish the details needed to recommend them here, such as their open-world structure, group limits, crossplay arrangements, or regional platform availability. Check each game’s official developer or publisher information for those specifics before deciding. Microsoft’s US online co-op catalog
