Use a controller if it feels more comfortable, then remap it to suit your play style. There is no documented universal best graphics preset, frame rate, or controller.
Start with the built-in display options
The remaster’s Steam listing describes enhanced HD graphics, modern control mechanics, an updated camera, and retro video modes. Pick the visual mode you prefer in the game’s display settings; the available information does not establish one mode as best for image quality or performance on every PC. Steam’s official listing also describes 45 levels across five worlds.
Choose VSync based on your display
PCGamingWiki reports that disabling VSync allows the game to run uncapped at 60 FPS or higher, while enabling it makes the game use the monitor’s refresh rate. These are reported behaviors, not a promise of a particular frame rate on your hardware. The same source notes that in-game cutscenes run at 15 FPS. See PCGamingWiki’s technical notes.

Use a resolution override only if the menu falls short
Prefer the game’s normal display menu. If it does not offer the resolution you need, PCGamingWiki documents a config.ini workaround:

- Open the game’s
config.inifile. - Change the windowed or fullscreen dimensions to the resolution you want.
- Set
ForceOverrideResolution=1and save the file.
There are important limits: exclusive fullscreen requires a display that supports the requested resolution, and borderless windowed mode cannot be forced beyond the resolutions the game itself supports. If the override does not work, return to a supported resolution in the in-game menu.
Choose keyboard and mouse or a remappable controller
Controller support, controller remapping, XInput-compatible devices, and the Steam Input API are documented for the PC version by PCGamingWiki. Choose the input style that feels comfortable, then adjust the mappings in the game or through Steam Input if you play on Steam. Steam Input is an extra customization route, and its behavior can vary with the controller and configuration. No particular controller model is established as best, and a separate gamepad is optional.

Steam Deck and external controllers
SteamDB lists the game as Steam Deck Verified and reports that default graphics perform well. Its compatibility notes say an external Bluetooth or USB controller may need to be selected manually through the Deck’s Quick Access Menu. Check SteamDB’s compatibility entry; compatibility metadata may change as the game or testing is updated.
