Best Raspberry Pi for a 24/7 YouTube Stream with FFmpeg: Pi 4 vs. Pi 5

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an FFmpeg setup that encodes H.264 on the Raspberry Pi itself, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the better-supported choice. Raspberry Pi documents a hardware H.264 encoder path for Pi 4, while Pi 5 has no hardware video encoder and uses software encoding for H.264. Pi 5 is the newer, faster general-purpose computer, but that does not make it the better fit when the board must encode the stream.

That is an architecture-based recommendation, not a guarantee that either board will stay live without interruption for 24/7. Test your complete setup—input, FFmpeg build, resolution, frame rate, cooling, power, network and recovery process—under sustained load before relying on it.

Pi 4 vs. Pi 5 for FFmpeg YouTube streaming

Consideration Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Raspberry Pi 5
H.264 encoding on the board Hardware encoder documented; Raspberry Pi’s comparison identifies h264_v4l2m2m. No hardware video encoder; H.264 encoding uses software such as libx264.
General-purpose processor Not detailed in the cited comparison. Quad-core 2.4 GHz Cortex-A76 CPU.
Video decoder Not stated in the cited sources. 4Kp60 HEVC decoder; decoding capability does not provide H.264 encoding.
Proven 24/7 uptime for this workload Not established by the cited sources. Not established by the cited sources.

The encoder path is the deciding distinction if the Pi must encode H.264 in real time. Pi 4 has a documented hardware-encoding route; Pi 5’s faster CPU and 4Kp60 HEVC decoder do not change the manufacturer’s statement that it lacks video-encoding hardware. See Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding comparison, its explanation of Pi 5’s software environment, and the Pi 5 specifications.

When Pi 5 may still make sense

Pi 5 can be a viable alternative if software encoding performs adequately for your chosen resolution, frame rate, filters and other workload. Do not infer that from general CPU specifications alone: validate the actual stream on the actual software stack. The available sources do not establish a universal frame-rate ceiling or a head-to-head 24/7 reliability result.

Configure the stream for YouTube Live

YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to Google. For H.264 at 1080p30, its recommended bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a measurement of what a particular Pi can encode. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before going live, because platform guidance can change.

Choose the bitrate for your exact resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s table rather than carrying the 1080p30 range over to a different mode. The upload connection must also sustain the selected bitrate; allow headroom for normal network variation. Use the recommended two-second keyframe interval when your encoder exposes that setting.

Keep the video path as simple as the source allows

If the source is already encoded in a format and profile YouTube accepts, passing the video through may avoid unnecessary decode-and-re-encode work. Whether that is possible depends on the source, audio, pixel format and output requirements. A camera input, a pre-encoded file and a stream with filters do not necessarily use the same FFmpeg options, so there is no single safe command for every Pi and every input.

Before choosing an encoder option, verify that the installed FFmpeg build and the Pi 4 kernel/driver stack expose the hardware encoder you intend to use. Availability can vary with software versions. Confirm the input format, audio handling, output resolution and frame rate, bitrate mode, keyframe interval and RTMP or RTMPS destination before constructing a command; do not assume a Pi 5 software-encoding command can use Pi 4 hardware, or vice versa.

Prepare the Pi for sustained operation

Power and cabling

For Pi 4, Raspberry Pi recommends a 3 A USB-C supply. Its documentation warns that low-voltage indications can result from an inadequate supply or cable, and that low-quality supplies can cause unpredictable behavior or storage corruption. Use a suitable supply and cable, and check for low-voltage warnings during a sustained run. This reduces a known source of trouble; it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. See Raspberry Pi’s power and hardware guidance.

Cooling, network and recovery

  • Provide cooling appropriate to the board and the sustained encoding workload. A brief successful test does not establish behavior over a long run.
  • Use a stable network connection and confirm that the selected upload bitrate leaves room for connection variation.
  • Test the complete stream for longer than a quick launch check, watching for dropped frames, encoding overload, overheating or disconnects.
  • Plan how FFmpeg will restart after a process failure and how the system will recover after a power or network interruption. Neither board specification promises automatic recovery for your complete setup.
  • Keep the operating system, FFmpeg build, input device and any filters in the test configuration you plan to deploy; changing one can change performance or compatibility.

The sources do not specify a universal RAM minimum for this job, nor do they provide a controlled comparison of both boards running an identical YouTube FFmpeg workload continuously. Treat reliability as a property of the complete installation, not something established by model name alone.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Technical compliance with YouTube’s ingest settings does not establish that you have the right to stream the video, music or other material you send. Use content you own or are licensed to use, and check the rights for both the recording and any included music or other third-party material. YouTube’s copyright and channel rules may affect whether a stream can remain available; confirm the current requirements for your content and channel before scheduling continuous playback.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without leaving a Pi, computer or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
