For a headless Raspberry Pi that sends an FFmpeg stream to YouTube, start with the 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite image for a model listed as compatible, configure networking and SSH before first boot, and match your encoder settings to YouTube’s ingest guidance. Then test the actual source, output profile, power and network under sustained load. There is no evidence-based guarantee that a particular Pi and FFmpeg build will encode every workload continuously, so validate your own setup before leaving it unattended.
Choose the Raspberry Pi OS image and board together
Raspberry Pi OS is Raspberry Pi’s officially supported operating system. As of 3 October 2026, the downloads page lists a 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite image based on Debian Trixie, released 15 September 2026, and lists Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 4 among supported models. Lite is command-line-only, making it a natural fit for a headless streaming appliance. Check the current compatibility listing before selecting an image for a different model.
For this use, choose the Lite edition unless you specifically need a desktop. A graphical desktop adds components the headless streaming task does not require. The 64-bit image is appropriate only for a model listed as supporting it.
Prepare the system for headless operation
Configure access before the first boot
Use Raspberry Pi Imager to write the OS image to boot media and configure the device before its first start. Set a hostname, user credentials, network access and SSH in Imager. This lets you administer the Pi remotely after it boots, rather than relying on a monitor and keyboard for initial setup.

Choose boot storage and model-matched power
Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance says an SD card with at least 8 GB can get started with Raspberry Pi OS Lite; allow additional room if you expect to install software or retain files locally. The guidance recommends an official Raspberry Pi power supply and specifies 27 W USB-C for Raspberry Pi 5 and 15 W USB-C for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. These are model-specific recommendations, not a universal supply rating.
Use stable wired networking where available. Whatever connection you choose, assess its sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a short speed-test peak.

Set an encoder profile YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and these H.264 bitrate examples:
| Output profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; maximum 4 seconds |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; maximum 4 seconds |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not measurements of what a Raspberry Pi can encode. The selected resolution, frame rate, codec, filters and source format all affect the workload. A profile YouTube accepts may still exceed the sustained encoding capacity of a particular board and FFmpeg build.

Make the total stream bitrate fit the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20 percent upload headroom; measure stability over time and include audio and any other stream data when assessing capacity. A connection that barely matches the video bitrate is not a sound basis for an unattended stream.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube without exposing the stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder setup. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public command history, screenshots, source repositories or logs. If it is exposed, rotate it using Live Control Room controls.

The exact FFmpeg invocation depends on the input, installed FFmpeg build, chosen codec and whether the Pi must encode or can pass through a suitable existing stream. The available official guidance does not establish a workload-matched FFmpeg command or prove hardware encoding for a particular Pi. Do not assume that a codec option alone selects an encoder the board can sustain. Confirm which encoder your build actually offers, configure it for YouTube’s ingest profile, and test it with the intended source rather than copying a command intended for different hardware or input.
Test before treating the stream as always-on
- Start with the real source. Use representative audio and motion, not a static or unusually simple clip. Apply the resolution, frame rate, codec, filters and bitrate you intend to run.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Confirm that the stream is received and that the audio and video behave as expected in Live Control Room. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before going live.
- Watch the Pi during a sustained run. Check whether the intended output remains stable over an extended representative session. The official sources do not provide a universal duration or a guaranteed Pi/FFmpeg performance threshold, so assess the workload you will actually use.
- Verify the network under load. Confirm stable upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20 percent headroom, rather than trusting a momentary peak.
- Only then rely on unattended operation. Recheck after changing the input, output profile, FFmpeg build, board, cooling or network. A successful short test does not establish continuous performance for a changed workload.
What determines whether a Pi can run your stream continuously?
There is no defensible one-size-fits-all Pi model recommendation for every FFmpeg stream from the available official documentation. Compare candidate setups against the specific workload and check:

- Whether the model supports the selected Raspberry Pi OS image.
- Whether FFmpeg must encode the source or can use an appropriate stream as-is.
- The sustained encoding work implied by the output resolution, frame rate, codec and filters.
- Memory headroom, storage needs, model-matched power and thermal behavior.
- Whether the upload connection remains reliable with the necessary bitrate headroom.
Raspberry Pi’s OS and setup guidance establishes supported images, boot-media basics and power recommendations; YouTube establishes ingest and network guidance. Neither establishes a sustained benchmark for a specific Pi, FFmpeg build and source-to-output workload. Treat the test on your own hardware as the deciding evidence.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm the server URL, stream key and selected RTMP/RTMPS destination in Live Control Room and FFmpeg. | Re-copy the current values and retry. If the key may have been exposed, rotate it before resuming. |
| Stream health is unstable | Compare total stream bitrate with sustained upload capacity and check whether the connection has the recommended 20 percent headroom. | Measure upload stability and reduce the workload or bitrate to a profile the connection can carry reliably. |
| Video is rejected or does not match the intended profile | Check codec, CBR configuration, frame rate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s published ingest guidance. | Use a supported codec, keep keyframes at the recommended 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| The Pi cannot sustain the chosen output | Check whether encoding, filters, resolution, frame rate or the installed FFmpeg build differs from the tested workload. | Test a less demanding profile or another suitable setup; do not infer continuous capability from OS compatibility alone. |
| The device is unreachable after boot | Check that network access, hostname, credentials and SSH were configured during imaging, and verify the network connection. | Use local console access to correct configuration if remote access was not enabled or the device joined the wrong network. |
