Best Raspberry Pi Power Supply for an Always-On FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Raspberry Pi 5, the straightforward official choice is the Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply. Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5; a 3 A supply can still run the board with lower-power peripherals, but the Pi limits power available to USB devices if it does not detect the 5 A mode. For a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, use the official 15 W USB-C supply recommendation instead. The right choice depends on your Pi model and attached USB devices—not simply a charger’s advertised wattage.

This is the answer to the power-supply question, not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously in FFmpeg. The official guidance cited here does not establish Pi-specific FFmpeg performance.

Which power supply fits each Raspberry Pi model?

Raspberry Pi model Official recommendation What to check
Raspberry Pi 5 5 V, 5 A; Raspberry Pi’s 27 W USB-C supply provides up to 5.1 V at 5 A. Whether the supply supports the Pi’s 5 V, 5 A mode, and whether USB peripherals need the higher current limit.
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 5 V, 3 A; Raspberry Pi’s 15 W USB-C supply. Use the recommendation for this model rather than assuming the Pi 5 supply requirement applies.
Raspberry Pi 500 5 V, 5 A; 27 W USB-C supply. Confirm the supply and cable provide the required 5 V mode.
Raspberry Pi 400 5 V, 3 A; 15 W USB-C supply. Confirm the model before purchasing a supply.

Raspberry Pi says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.” Its model recommendations are based on voltage measured at the plug, so removable cable voltage loss matters. [Raspberry Pi power-supply recommendations] [Raspberry Pi getting started]

Can a 3 A USB-C charger run a Raspberry Pi 5?

It can be adequate when the Pi 5 has only lower-power peripherals attached. Raspberry Pi documents a USB peripheral current limit of 600 mA when the board does not detect the 5 A supply mode; with that mode, the limit rises to 1.6 A. Those figures concern the current available to USB devices, not a promise about total system draw during FFmpeg encoding.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not choose a charger solely because its label says “27 W.” The Pi requests 5 V modes, and USB Power Delivery supplies may not offer the optional 5 V, 5 A mode. Check the exact supported voltage/current profiles; a higher wattage rating at another voltage does not establish compatibility. [Raspberry Pi USB current limit] [Raspberry Pi USB-PD note]

Will a Raspberry Pi 5 power an SSD while streaming?

It depends on the SSD enclosure and its power needs. The Pi 5’s 5 A supply mode raises the USB peripheral limit, which is useful for higher-power devices such as hard drives or SSDs, but USB current is shared across connected devices. Raspberry Pi advises using an externally powered hub when peripherals require more power than the board can provide. If storage disconnects or behaves erratically, test with a powered hub or a separately powered drive rather than assuming the stream itself is the cause. What matters when choosing a supply?

  • Board model and connector: match the recommendation to the specific Pi rather than generalizing across the range.
  • 5 V current mode: for Pi 5, verify explicit support for 5 V at 5 A; advertised wattage alone is not enough.
  • Peripheral load: account for USB storage and other devices drawing power from the board.
  • Cable voltage loss: Raspberry Pi’s voltage recommendations are measured at the plug, so a removable cable’s length and quality can affect the voltage reaching the board.
  • Powered hub: move devices with power requirements beyond the board’s limits to an externally powered hub.

Power is only one part of an always-on stream

A stable supply does not guarantee a reliable YouTube stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion, testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and providing outbound bandwidth above the total stream bitrate. Its guidance recommends about 20% upload headroom. Keyframe intervals should be two seconds, with four seconds as the maximum; supported codecs and recommended bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate. [YouTube encoder settings and bitrates] [YouTube live-streaming tips]

Bitrate is network traffic, not a direct measurement of electrical consumption. These YouTube settings also do not establish that every Raspberry Pi model can encode every listed format and setting in FFmpeg continuously. Confirm the capabilities of your exact board and encoding workflow separately.

Troubleshooting power-related stream problems

  • Pi 5 reports or behaves as though USB power is restricted: verify that the supply supports and negotiates the 5 V, 5 A mode; a high wattage rating by itself does not prove this.
  • An SSD disconnects or fails to stay mounted: reduce the USB load or connect the drive through an externally powered hub. The Pi’s USB current is shared among attached devices.
  • The board is unstable despite a suitable supply rating: check the cable and voltage at the plug; cable voltage loss can matter.
  • The stream drops while the Pi remains powered: check YouTube stream health and outbound bandwidth, and test the encoder settings before going live. A power supply cannot correct network disruptions.

Does a more powerful supply make FFmpeg encode faster?

The power-supply recommendation does not establish encoding performance. Test the exact Pi model, resolution, frame rate, and FFmpeg configuration you plan to use.
