Best Raspberry Pi Storage for a 24/7 FFmpeg YouTube Stream in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a headless Raspberry Pi running FFmpeg around the clock, a USB SSD is the best general-purpose boot-storage choice if your exact Pi supports USB mass-storage boot and the SSD, enclosure, and power setup are compatible. A microSD card is simpler; a Pi 5 can also use NVMe with a compatible M.2 adapter. If you are not recording video on the Pi, continuous streaming does not mean continuous local video writes, so you may not need a large drive.

There is no single best choice for every Raspberry Pi generation or workload. The key questions are which board you have, whether it supports the boot method you want, and whether FFmpeg is saving a local recording. India-specific prices, stock, and warranty terms vary by seller and were not established here, so check the exact listing and product specifications before buying.

Choose by model and workload

Storage Best fit What to check
microSD The simplest setup and a straightforward boot medium. Choose capacity for your OS and files. Do not assume a card has a particular endurance or lifespan without specifications for that exact model.
USB SSD A general-purpose boot or external-storage option on a Pi that supports USB mass-storage boot. Confirm boot support for your exact board, and check the SSD, enclosure or cable, and power configuration together.
NVMe SSD A Pi 5 setup where you want an M.2 drive. Pi 5 needs a compatible M.2 adapter. Confirm the drive and adapter fit and are compatible with your setup.

Raspberry Pi documentation identifies microSD as the common boot medium and says some newer models can boot from USB mass storage and other options. Do not assume USB boot support from the Raspberry Pi name alone: check the documentation for your exact model before buying a drive or changing boot media. Raspberry Pi says, “Faster storage devices with higher read and write speeds improve the overall performance of your Raspberry Pi, making it run more smoothly.” That is a general performance observation, not a quantified reliability or service-life guarantee.

How much capacity do you need?

If the Pi only runs the stream

Boot storage holds the operating system, packages, logs, and local working files. The live video is transmitted to YouTube; streaming continuously does not, by itself, require the Pi to write a continuous copy of the video to its drive. Raspberry Pi lists 8 GB as the minimum for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS desktop and Full, and advises allowing room to grow.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

As a practical choice rather than an official minimum, 64 GB gives room beyond the OS for updates, logs, and modest local files. You can use less for a lean Lite installation if the workload and available capacity suit you. Raspberry Pi’s official microSD cards are offered in 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB sizes; its official SSD page lists 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB drives. Those are product ranges, not requirements for an FFmpeg stream.

(video bitrate in bits per second + audio bitrate in bits per second) × 86,400 ÷ 8

For example, use the bitrate of the recording you actually save, not an assumed YouTube upload setting. Then allow extra room for filesystem overhead, other files, and your retention policy. YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate is not necessarily the bitrate or format of a local recording.

microSD, USB SSD, or Pi 5 NVMe?

microSD: simplest, with capacity matched to the job

microSD is the common boot choice. Raspberry Pi’s official cards have C10, U3, V30, and A2 ratings; the published 4 kB random-I/O figures are 3,200 read IOPS and 1,200 write IOPS for Raspberry Pi 4, and 5,000 read IOPS and 2,000 write IOPS for Raspberry Pi 5. These figures describe the official cards in the cited documentation, not every card carrying those ratings. For a stream that is not being locally recorded, choose enough capacity for the OS and working files rather than buying a large card solely because the stream runs all day. No general lifespan can be promised for an unspecified card.

USB SSD: practical where the board supports booting from it

A USB SSD is a sensible general-purpose recommendation when you want external storage or faster storage and the exact Pi supports USB mass-storage boot. Verify the board’s boot support and the complete connection and power setup, including enclosure or cable, before purchase. Raspberry Pi documentation says faster storage can improve system performance; it does not establish a guaranteed reliability improvement or longer lifetime for every SSD.

Pi 5 NVMe: a model-specific option

For a Raspberry Pi 5, an M.2 NVMe drive requires a compatible M.2 adapter. Raspberry Pi’s official SSD range is M.2 2230 NVMe 1.4 and lists 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB capacities. Treat this as a Pi 5-specific route, not a general recommendation for other boards; confirm adapter and drive compatibility for the exact build.

Keep stream bitrate separate from storage capacity

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for secure delivery. Its published H.264 bitrate ranges include 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not local-disk requirements. If you record locally, calculate storage from the bitrate of that recording and its retention period.

Buying in India: verify the exact listing

There is no verified India-wide price, stock, warranty, or seller comparison for these categories here. Compare the exact model and seller rather than relying on a generic “Raspberry Pi SSD” or “high-endurance card” label.

  • For microSD, check capacity and the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact card. Do not infer endurance from a speed-class logo.
  • For USB SSD, verify that your Pi supports USB mass-storage boot if you intend to boot from it, and check enclosure, cable, and power compatibility.
  • For Pi 5 NVMe, confirm that the M.2 adapter supports the intended drive and fits your board setup.
  • Check the seller’s current warranty and return terms in India; these can differ by listing.

Run the stream from a PC—or in the cloud

If your goal is specifically to keep an FFmpeg setup on a Raspberry Pi, storage selection is only one part of that build: the board and boot support, power, network connection, encoder settings, and any local recording policy all matter. For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to keep playing 24/7 without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded video to YouTube, not a live camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your video or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
