Start with the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 if you want the clearest connection to Resident Evil Requiem: it returns to Raccoon City and introduces Leon during the crisis that shaped his later story. If you would rather follow a different thread, choose Resident Evil 3 for more pursuit-focused outbreak horror, Resident Evil 4 for Leon-led action, or play Resident Evil 7 biohazard before Resident Evil Village for the Ethan storyline. None is required homework: Requiem’s director says it was designed to welcome people who have never played the series.
Which Resident Evil game should you play first after Requiem?
Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the best general next pick for players who want context for Requiem’s Raccoon City setting and Leon’s history. Capcom describes the game as a remake of the 1998 entry, whose story centers on survival in a zombie-infested city. Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has described Leon’s return to Raccoon City as a return to the place where his bioterror nightmare began. Capcom’s series overview and Nakanishi’s January 29, 2026 interview establish those connections.

Do you need to play older Resident Evil games first?
No. Nakanishi said Requiem was designed to welcome complete newcomers who do not know about the Raccoon City Incident and have not played any Resident Evil games. Earlier entries can add context, but they are optional rather than prerequisites.
Requiem itself follows Grace Ashcroft as she investigates the truth behind the Raccoon City Incident, while also bringing Leon back to the city. Capcom describes Grace’s sections as more horror-oriented and Leon’s as more action-oriented, a contrast that helps explain why several different games can make satisfying follow-ups. Choose a follow-up by setting, tone, or storyline
For Raccoon City and Leon’s early story: Resident Evil 2 (2019)
The 2019 remake is the most direct choice if Requiem leaves you curious about Raccoon City or how Leon’s story began. It revisits the city during the outbreak, rather than continuing Requiem’s plot as a direct sequel. Make sure a store listing says “2019” or “remake” if you specifically want this version rather than the 1998 original.
For more pursuit horror in Raccoon City: Resident Evil 3 (2020)
The remake of Resident Evil 3 offers another journey through outbreak-era Raccoon City, with a stronger emphasis on being hunted. Capcom characterizes its central appeal as the terror of being constantly chased. It suits players who want a neighboring setting and pressure-driven action, but it is not necessary to understand Requiem.

For Leon in a more action-focused game: Resident Evil 4
Choose Resident Evil 4 if Leon is the draw and you want the series to lean further toward action. Capcom notes that the original introduced an over-the-shoulder perspective to enhance action; the remake retells that game. Check which edition you are buying, since “original” and “remake” are distinct releases.
For the Ethan storyline: Resident Evil 7 biohazard before Resident Evil Village
Play these in release-story order: Resident Evil 7 biohazard, then Resident Evil Village. Capcom identifies Village as a sequel to the seventh installment, and Nakanishi describes Ethan’s story as concluding across those two games. This route makes most sense if you want another sustained horror-led storyline, rather than more background on Leon.

Check platform and edition before buying
Requiem released on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, according to Capcom’s release announcement. That list does not establish which platform has every older game or version. Before purchasing, check the individual product listing for your platform and confirm whether it is the original release or a remake.
Capcom has announced a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, titled Resident Evil Veronica, for 2027, with further release details to come. It is a future option rather than a game currently available to play after Requiem. Capcom’s June 8, 2026 announcement gives the announced timing.
