Choose by how you want to get games, not by an abstract “best” score. A cartridge owner may value original media more than library size; a player who wants a no-configuration experience may prefer curated collections or a subscription; an Android handheld suits someone comfortable setting up software.

Analogue positions the Pocket around a “first-in-class 3.5”, 615 ppi, LCD.” The quoted description is the company’s product copy, not an independent measurement. WIRED’s 2025 guide says the display has ten times the pixels of the original square Game Boy and recommends the device. That high-resolution screen is the central appeal if you already own games for the Game Boy family and want to play them on dedicated hardware.

What to check before buying
The Pocket is not a universal reader for every retro cartridge. Analogue lists a Game Gear adapter, but broader compatibility depends on the appropriate adapter or FPGA core; check the exact system and accessories you need before treating it as a replacement for another console. Account for the cost and availability of those extras as well as the handheld itself.

Best for an easy cartridge library: Evercade EXP-R or EXP
How the library works
Evercade is the pick for players who want a curated, licensed collection on physical cartridges rather than managing emulator files. Creative Bloq’s 2026 guide says the EXP-R includes 18 pre-installed games, including six IREM games, and supports more than 400 games across cartridge collections. Those figures describe the EXP-R listing and the broader collection ecosystem, not 400 games bundled with the handheld.
EXP-R versus EXP

Budget for cartridges as well as the console. WIRED listed cartridge collections at $20 in its 2025 guide; that is a dated price, not a quote for current stock, region, or collection. Check the games in each collection before purchasing: the number of available titles does not tell you whether the particular games you want are included.
Best for configurable emulation: Retroid Pocket 5

Plan for software and storage
Unlike the cartridge-focused options, this choice involves setting up software and managing game files. Use software and game files you are legally entitled to use; rules on copying, downloading, and using game files differ by jurisdiction, and owning a cartridge or disc does not by itself settle every legal question. Include storage and setup time in your decision, not just the device specification.
Best for Nintendo classics through an official service: Switch + Nintendo Switch Online
A Switch paired with Nintendo Switch Online makes sense if you want a supported Nintendo classics catalog through an official subscription rather than a dedicated retro handheld. WIRED’s 2025 guide describes access to more than 100 NES and SNES titles in the service context it covers. That figure is not a promise about every region, membership tier, or the catalog today: check Nintendo’s current local catalog and subscription terms before paying.
