Company of Heroes 3 is the best-supported alternative if you want Dawn of War-style squad tactics and battlefield control. It shares a documented development lineage with the series, but trades Warhammer 40,000’s science-fiction setting for World War II. If keeping the 40K universe matters most, play another Dawn of War entry—or watch for Dawn of War IV, scheduled for December 3, 2026, rather than currently available.
The right pick depends on which part of Dawn of War you want more of: squad combat, base building and large armies, character progression, co-op, or the setting itself.
Quick picks by what you want from Dawn of War
| If you want… | Start with… | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Squad tactics and battlefield control | Company of Heroes 3 | It is a World War II RTS, not a 40K game. |
| Mechanized battles in a distinctive setting | Iron Harvest | It replaces 40K with an alternate-history 1920s and dieselpunk machines. |
| Smaller forces, character growth, and Last Stand | Dawn of War II | It emphasizes fast-action play and RPG progression rather than the original’s mass-army base-building emphasis. |
| More 40K with mass battles and base building | Dawn of War IV, when it launches | It is an upcoming sequel, not an available game as of October 3, 2026. |
Company of Heroes 3: closest match for squad tactics
For a Dawn of War fan who values squads, positioning, and tactical control more than the exact setting, Company of Heroes 3 is the clearest first recommendation. Relic’s official history describes the first Dawn of War as bringing resource-management innovations and a squad-based interface to the series, and says Dawn of War II incorporated gameplay features introduced in Company of Heroes. That makes the connection more than a surface-level resemblance: it is the strongest documented mechanical lineage among these alternatives. Relic Entertainment’s studio history
The current Company of Heroes 3 Steam listing identifies it as an RTS and lists single-player, online PvP, and online co-op. It also offers optional full tactical pause in single-player, letting you pause to issue orders rather than manage every decision in real time. The Steam listing gives February 23, 2023 as its release date; features and store availability can change. Company of Heroes 3 on Steam

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Expect a different kind of war. The series is set in World War II, so it does not reproduce 40K factions, lore, or setting-specific atmosphere. Its appeal here is the squad-focused battlefield play and Relic connection, not an identical economy or one-to-one translation of Dawn of War.
Iron Harvest: an alternate-history mech battlefield
Choose Iron Harvest if you want another strongly stylized war setting, with infantry and tanks fighting alongside dieselpunk mechs, and do not mind leaving 40K behind. It is set in an alternate 1920s. PC Gamer’s July 20, 2026 strategy-games feature describes it as a Company of Heroes-like RTS; that is the publication’s comparison, rather than a developer-confirmed lineage. That makes it a looser match than Company of Heroes 3 for readers specifically looking for the documented Relic connection, but a natural option for fans drawn to imposing machines and a distinctive military setting.
Dawn of War II: the franchise pick for squads and progression
If you have not played the franchise, Dawn of War II may be the most reliable choice: it keeps the 40K universe while taking a different approach from the original’s large-army base-building play. Relic describes it as fast-action RTS gameplay with RPG progression and enhanced character customization. Its three-player Last Stand mode focuses on survival. Relic also says the game incorporated gameplay features introduced in Company of Heroes. Relic Entertainment’s studio history

Pick it for smaller-force action and developing characters, not as the closest option if what you want is the original game’s massed armies and base construction.
Dawn of War IV: the upcoming direct sequel
Dawn of War IV is the option to watch if you want a direct continuation in the 40K setting. Deep Silver’s current official page schedules its Windows PC release on Steam for December 3, 2026; Commander Edition buyers are listed for early unlock on November 30. As of October 3, 2026, those dates are in the future, so this is an announced game rather than an available recommendation. Dawn of War IV official website

Warhammer Community’s announcement describes a return to mass battles and base building. It names four factions—Adeptus Mechanicus, Blood Ravens Space Marines, Orks, and Necrons—and says the campaign will have more than 70 missions playable solo or with a friend. The announcement also lists Skirmish, Last Stand, and multiplayer. These are announced features, not an assessment of how the finished game plays. Warhammer Community’s Dawn of War IV announcement

- Squad tactics and battlefield control: Start with Company of Heroes 3; it has the clearest documented mechanical connection, but changes the setting to World War II.
- Character progression and smaller-force play: Choose Dawn of War II for Relic-described RPG progression and customization, or consider its three-player Last Stand mode.
- Base building and massed armies: Look within the franchise. The original and Dawn of War III are closer internal choices; Dawn of War IV is announced as returning to these roots but is not yet released.
- Campaign and co-op: Company of Heroes 3 lists single-player and online co-op; Dawn of War IV is announced with a solo-or-co-op campaign. For Dawn of War II, the specifically noted co-op option here is three-player Last Stand.
- 40K atmosphere: Only Dawn of War games preserve the setting. Iron Harvest offers a different mechanized-war fantasy, while Company of Heroes 3 moves to a historical war context.
Want the setting outside a video game?
If the armies and world are as important to you as the RTS mechanics, Warhammer 40,000 tabletop miniatures and starter sets offer a separate way to engage with the same setting. Games Workshop describes its hobby products as including miniatures, kits, books, and hobby accessories. A tabletop set is a physical hobby option, not a substitute for another RTS recommendation.
