OBS Studio is the best free screen recorder for PC if you want control over gameplay, desktop, webcam, and audio sources. Choose Bandicam for a Windows-focused capture workflow, or Camtasia if you want recording and editing together. There is no universal winner: the right pick depends on what you need to record, your operating system, and whether you want editing built in.
How to choose the best screen recorder for PC
Start with the recording you want to make, then check that the software supports its sources and your operating system. Recording a game with microphone commentary differs from capturing a single window, making a narrated tutorial, or bringing console footage into a PC.
- Capture target: Confirm support for the desktop, a selected window, a game, webcam, or capture-card input you need.
- Audio: Check whether the program can record desktop sound and a microphone, and whether it offers the control you need over each source.
- Editing: An included editor may suit tutorial makers who want to trim and finish a recording in the same workflow. For simple clips, a capture-focused tool may be enough.
- Ease of setup: Scene-based controls can offer flexibility but may take longer to learn than a simpler capture interface.
- Limits and terms: Verify recording duration, watermarks, output options, platform support, trial conditions, and current license terms with the vendor before committing.
The recommendations below draw on official product documentation and an editorial comparison, not matched performance tests. They should not be read as a benchmark of recording quality, CPU use, or frame loss.

OBS Studio: best free and flexible option
OBS Studio is a strong pick when you want to combine sources or adjust your recording setup. Its Quick Start guide explains how to add display and window capture on Windows and Linux, game capture on Windows, and video capture sources such as webcams and capture cards. The default setup captures desktop audio and microphone input, and you can select sources manually. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.

That flexibility comes with a learning curve. TechRadar’s comparison describes OBS as free and open source, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and notes that its many controls can overwhelm newcomers. Treat that as editorial guidance rather than a measured setup-time comparison. Source availability and behavior vary by operating system.
For application-specific audio capture, OBS documents support on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. The feature carries beta labeling in the documentation, and some applications may require routing workarounds. Do not assume every program’s audio will behave identically; see the OBS application audio capture guide.

Bandicam: Windows-focused screen and game recording
Bandicam suits Windows users looking for screen or gameplay capture. Its vendor overview lists game, webcam, lecture, online-video, and desktop recording, and states that Bandicam 2027 and later require Windows 11/10 64-bit. The listed minimums are a dual-core CPU and 4 GB of RAM; a hardware encoder is recommended. The overview names NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, and AMD VCE/AMF and lists recording up to 3840 × 2160. These are vendor specifications, not independent performance results. See the Bandicam overview.
The official download page lists version 27.0.6.2686, dated 2026-09-09, as Bandicam 2027. It says free recordings are limited to five minutes each and have no watermark, while edited exports contain a watermark; activation removes the recording time limit. Check the Bandicam download page and current vendor terms for the latest details. The current license price and complete terms are not established here, so verify them before purchase. Do not assume support for Windows 7 or 8 in the current release; the vendor’s support table distinguishes older releases.

Camtasia: recording with editing built in
Camtasia is worth considering if you want a recorder and editor in one tutorial-production workflow. TechRadar’s comparison lists it for Windows and macOS. That makes it a plausible fit, not an objective best choice for every PC user. Check TechSmith’s current product information for price, license structure, and trial terms before deciding.
Other options: EaseUS RecExperts and Icecream Screen Recorder
TechRadar’s comparison describes EaseUS RecExperts as a Windows option with webcam and audio capture and scheduling. It characterizes Icecream Screen Recorder as a simpler tool with annotation and zoom features, and notes a five-minute limit on its free version. These are editorial descriptions, not a substitute for checking the vendors’ current platform support and plan terms.

Recording gameplay, commentary, and console footage
For PC gameplay with voice commentary
OBS can combine a game source with a microphone, and on Windows its guide also describes game capture. Add the sources you actually need, then check the audio meters and make a short test recording before capturing a full session. This helps catch missing microphone input, unexpectedly quiet desktop sound, or a source that is not appearing.
For console footage routed through the PC
A capture card is one way to bring console video into OBS: the OBS guide describes a game capture device source and names Elgato and AVerMedia as examples. A capture card is relevant to that console-to-PC workflow; ordinary PC desktop recording generally does not require one. See the OBS video capture sources guide.

For a tutorial or presentation
Decide whether you need a full desktop or a specific window, whether narration should come from a microphone, and whether you need webcam footage. OBS lets you choose sources manually. If post-production in the same tool matters more than configuring separate capture sources, consider Camtasia and verify its current terms with TechSmith.
Set up OBS and test a recording
- Open OBS and add a scene. A scene is the arrangement of capture sources for the recording. Name it for the task, such as gameplay or a tutorial.
- Add the capture source. Use display or window capture for desktop work, game capture for supported Windows gameplay, or a video capture device for a webcam or capture card. The choices differ by operating system; follow the official Quick Start Guide.
- Check audio inputs. Confirm the desktop audio and microphone inputs you want are present. Select devices manually if the defaults are not right. For application audio capture, observe the documented Windows version and beta caveats.
- Review the recording settings. Choose an output location and suitable recording format and quality for your intended use. The sources cited here do not establish a single best bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for all PCs and recordings; use OBS’s current settings guidance for your hardware and needs.
- Make a short test recording. Confirm the picture, sound, framing, and saved file before recording a long session. OBS specifically recommends testing for a few minutes rather than relying on an untested setup.
Common screen-recording problems and fixes
- Black or missing game image: Check that the selected capture source matches the target and that the game is running. If the source is not supported in your setup, try an appropriate window or display source and test again.
- No microphone or desktop sound: Inspect the selected audio devices and their meters. Select the correct source manually; application audio capture can require a supported Windows version and may need routing workarounds.
- Only part of the session is saved: Check the recorder’s duration limit and plan terms. Bandicam’s free recordings, for example, are limited to five minutes each.
- Watermark appears unexpectedly: Check whether the watermark applies to the recording or to an edited export. Bandicam’s download page distinguishes between its free recordings and edited exports.
- Console video is absent: Ensure the console signal is routed through a capture device recognized by the PC and added as a video capture source.
- Unsure whether settings work: Make a short test recording and play back the saved file before an important session.
Or let it run in the cloud
A screen recorder saves footage to your PC; it is different from keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It loops uploaded videos, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
