For lessons or demos that need trimming and a searchable transcript, use Google’s separate Screencast app. Choose the Loom Chrome extension if hosted sharing and collaboration are the priority; Loom’s desktop app does not run on Chromebook OS.
Which Chromebook screen recorder should you choose?

Decide first whether you want a local video or a hosted share link, then check which capture modes, audio options, editing tools, privacy controls and plan limits matter for your recording.
How to record your Chromebook screen with ChromeOS Screen Capture
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the Chromebook key used to display open windows.
- Select Screen record in the capture controls.
- Choose whether to record the full screen, a partial area or a window.
- Open Settings in the capture controls to choose camera and audio options available on your device.
- Start recording. To stop, use the stop control on the shelf or press Search + Shift + X.
ChromeOS saves Screen Capture recordings in Downloads by default. You can select a different destination in the capture settings. For a partial-screen capture, the documented choices include video in WebM format or GIF. GIF does not include audio or video input, so choose video if you need sound or a camera image.
When Google Screencast is a better fit
Screencast is a separate ChromeOS app, not just another name for the Screen Capture controls. Google says it is available on devices with ChromeOS version 104 or later. If it is missing from a school or work Chromebook, the administrator may have disabled it.

Editing and transcript tools
Screencast can trim a recording, mute it and add title overlays. Its transcript can be searched and used to navigate a recording, and Google lists translation support. Transcript processing may happen on-device or be sent to Google, depending on the device and language. The device language must be supported to create a recording.
Who can view a shared recording?
For a managed account, a shared Screencast recording is visible only to people in the managed domain who have the link. A personal-account recording shared by link is visible to anyone with the link. Treat the link accordingly, especially if a recording contains school, work or personal information.

Using Loom on a Chromebook
On Chromebook, Loom’s relevant option is its Chrome extension, which records through the browser. Atlassian’s support documentation lists full-screen, window, current-tab and camera-only choices. It also notes constraints such as camera-bubble behavior outside the browser and PDF limitations. Loom’s desktop app is available for Mac and Windows, not Chromebook OS; do not install instructions for the desktop app expecting them to work on ChromeOS.
Loom’s Chromebook product page promotes screen and audio recording, camera recording, editing and hosted link sharing. Those are vendor-described product capabilities, not independent test results. Loom’s pricing page listed its Starter plan as free with up to 25 videos per member and a five-minute limit for screen recordings, while Business listed unlimited recording time. These plan terms can change, so check Loom’s current pricing page before relying on a limit.

Choose the right capture and sharing workflow
- Need a quick local clip? Use ChromeOS Screen Capture; it has full-screen, window and partial-area modes and does not require a separate recorder installation.
- Need to teach from a longer demo? Consider Screencast if you want trimming, title overlays and a searchable transcript, and your device and account allow it.
- Need a shareable hosted link? Consider Loom’s Chrome extension, and check its current recording limits and sharing controls before recording.
- Need only a particular browser tab? Loom’s extension lists a current-tab option. ChromeOS Screen Capture instead offers screen, window and partial-area capture.
- Recording sensitive content? Review the destination and link permissions. Local Screen Capture files save to Downloads unless you change the folder; Screencast link visibility differs between managed and personal accounts.
Common problems and fixes
The Screen Capture shortcut does not appear to work
Use the capture controls from the shelf if available, then select Screen record. Confirm that you are using the Show windows key in Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. If recording is blocked on a managed Chromebook, ask the school or work administrator about device restrictions.
Screencast is missing
Check whether the Chromebook has ChromeOS version 104 or later. On a managed school or work account, an administrator may have disabled the app.

Screencast cannot create a transcript
Google says the device language must be supported to create a recording. Transcript processing can also vary by device and language, so the feature may not behave identically in every setup.
The saved clip has no sound or camera video
Open Screen Capture’s Settings before recording and select the available camera and audio options you need. If you chose GIF for a partial recording, switch to WebM video: GIF does not capture audio or video input.

The recording is not in the expected folder
ChromeOS Screen Capture uses Downloads by default, unless you changed the destination in capture settings. Check the selected folder there.
Loom’s desktop instructions do not match the Chromebook
Use the Loom Chrome extension workflow instead. Loom’s desktop app is not compatible with Chromebook OS, and extension features and limitations are not necessarily the same as the desktop app.
