Minecraft is the best-selling individual video game in Guinness World Records’ ranking, with 350 million units recorded in April 2025. Guinness lists Grand Theft Auto V at approximately 230 million copies as of March 2026. Tetris is sometimes said to lead when sales across its many versions are combined, but the often-cited 520 million estimate is an aggregate—not sales of one release.
So the answer depends on what you count: a single game, a franchise, or multiple versions of a game. Those totals should not be treated as interchangeable.

How do the all-time sales figures compare?
The clearest comparison keeps each figure’s scope and date attached to it:
| Game or total | Reported figure | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 350 million units, confirmed by Mojang and listed by Guinness in April 2025 | An individual video game; Guinness identifies it as the best-selling individual game. Guinness World Records |
| Grand Theft Auto V | Approximately 230 million copies as of March 2026 | The individual title, according to its Guinness record page. Guinness World Records |
| Tetris, versions combined | Estimated 520 million copies | An estimate combining multiple versions, cited by HP Tech Takes; it is not a total for one release or an official Tetris Company total. The underlying estimate’s year is not stated. HP Tech Takes |
| Tetris for Game Boy | 35 million copies | The separate Game Boy edition figure in HP Tech Takes; the underlying figure’s year is not stated. HP Tech Takes |
Is Tetris or Minecraft the best-selling game?
For an individual game, Guinness names Minecraft and records 350 million units. The larger Tetris estimate counts copies across multiple versions, so it answers a different question. HP’s compilation discusses the ranking dispute and lists the Game Boy edition separately from its multi-version estimate.

There is no fully apples-to-apples ranking unless the counting rule is clear. A comparison should say whether it counts one title or combines releases, and should identify the measurement and the date behind each number.
How many copies has GTA 5 sold?
Guinness World Records records Grand Theft Auto V at approximately 230 million copies as of March 2026. That figure is for GTA V, not the whole Grand Theft Auto franchise. See the Guinness record page.

Take-Two Interactive’s May 2026 investor presentation gives a similar-looking figure—nearly 230 million—but for the Grand Theft Auto series. The presentation calls these units “sold-in,” so the figure should not be relabelled as a GTA V-only total or as retail sell-through. Take-Two investor presentation.

- Scope: Is the number for one game, a series, or several versions combined?
- Measurement: Does the source say copies or units sold, or use a term such as “sold-in”?
- Date: When was the figure reported? Sales totals can change, and record pages may not be updated immediately.
- Distribution: Was a game commonly bundled with hardware? HP notes that Wii Sports was commonly bundled with Wii consoles, which complicates comparisons based on raw totals alone.
HP’s ranking says its underlying data use the latest information available as of early 2025. Its page’s later access date does not make the Tetris estimate a newly verified 2026 total. Guinness also cautions that record pages can lag events because records change daily and updates are not published immediately.
