Choose a Role for Your Spell List
Shadow Magic supplies subclass features, but it does not dictate every spell choice. For a control-and-positioning approach, consider how Darkness changes visibility and ranged attacks before casting it. Ranged attacks cannot be made into or out of the area, so Darkness can also interfere with allies who need clear shots. For a direct-damage approach, select spells that support that role instead of treating Darkness as an automatic opener.
Choose defense and mobility spells according to your party and the encounters you expect to face. The research does not establish a single best list of spells for every difficulty, party composition, or equipment setup.

Using Darkness Without Disrupting Your Party
- Decide whether obscuring the area helps your plan before casting. Darkness heavily obscures the area and blinds creatures within.
- Check whether allies need to make ranged attacks into or through the area. Those attacks cannot be made into or out of Darkness.
- Use the spell to shape positioning when its effect helps your party, rather than assuming it automatically disables every enemy.
- Choose follow-up spells and actions based on the situation and your character’s role.
Darkness is a tactical tool with a party-wide cost, not a guaranteed “murder dome.” The available sources do not substantiate claims that enemies routinely skip turns, that the subclass sees through all magical darkness without limitation, or that the spell makes encounters consistently safe.
Should You Multiclass?
For a first playthrough or a character intended to use the subclass’s full toolkit, remain a Sorcerer through level 12. The game’s level cap is 12, and Sorcerer levels determine when you gain class and subclass features. Multiclassing is valid, but a new class can delay features, feats, and spell progression; it can also affect which spellcasting modifier applies to item spells.

Patch 8 added the Shadow Blade spell, and a current build roundup discusses it in a Hexblade melee concept. Respec and Patch Context
You do not need to treat your initial choices as permanent: Withers can reset your class, subclass, and ability scores. The level cap is 12, according to the BG3 Wiki class reference. Patch 8 was released on April 15, 2025; Larian Studios described it as “Our final major game patch for Baldur’s Gate 3,” according to the Patch 8 notes.
