Use a Media Source with Loop enabled for one file, or a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled for multiple files. YouTube receives the broadcast through its encoder workflow; your computer and internet connection must stay available for as long as you stream.
Which software should you use?
For local playback, OBS Studio handles both a single looping video and a looping playlist, while also letting you build scenes and add overlays. Its Media Sources guide documents the relevant options. Choose the setup that fits your content:
| Option | Best for | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One prerecorded file | Enable Loop to restart the file when playback finishes. |
| OBS VLC Video source | A playlist of files | Enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| StreamNeo | Keeping an uploaded video or playlist streaming without leaving your computer on | Always on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free. |
OBS is the choice when you want local control over scenes and overlays or prefer to run the broadcast yourself. StreamNeo is the cloud-hosted alternative when you do not want a computer at home to remain on. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed.
What you need before starting
- An eligible YouTube channel. YouTube says livestreaming requires channel verification and no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- OBS Studio installed on the computer that will run the stream.
- Your prerecorded video file, or VLC installed if you plan to use a playlist source. The VLC installation must match OBS’s architecture.
- A stable computer and network connection for the entire local broadcast. OBS’s configuration wizard takes hardware and network conditions into account; test before relying on your setup.
- Content you have the right to broadcast. YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
How to loop one video with OBS
- Enable livestreaming in YouTube Studio. Complete any channel verification or eligibility steps, then choose encoder streaming. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips describe the encoder workflow.
- Open OBS and choose a scene. Use an existing scene or create one for the broadcast. Add a source with the plus button in the Sources panel.
- Add the video file. Select Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the prerecorded file.
- Enable the loop. In the Media Source properties, check Loop. OBS restarts playback when the file reaches its end.
- Check the scene and sound. Confirm the video appears in the preview, that its audio is routed as intended, and that the volume meters respond. Watch the preview through at least one playback transition if you need to confirm the loop.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or open the stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not share or publish it.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube’s preview before making the stream public or proceeding with the broadcast. Monitor audio and video while it runs.
How to loop a playlist with OBS
- Install VLC first. The VLC Video source is available only when VLC is installed. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s plus button and select VLC Video. Add the video files you want in the source’s playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. In the source properties, check Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the final playlist item.
- Check ordering and playback. Confirm the intended files appear in the playlist and that the preview and audio behave as expected.
- Send the scene to YouTube. Configure the YouTube encoder connection in Settings > Stream, start the OBS stream, and inspect YouTube’s preview before relying on it.
Test the stream before leaving it running
OBS recommends testing settings for a few minutes before a consequential stream. Its Quick Start Guide also describes the configuration wizard, which helps account for available hardware and network conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Verify YouTube receives the picture and sound, not just that OBS displays them locally.
- Confirm the file or playlist continues after a loop point.
- Check that audio is neither missing nor unintentionally doubled.
- Keep the computer awake and OBS open for the intended broadcast. A local stream depends on the computer and network remaining available.
Copyright, policies, and prerecorded content
Streaming a recording through an encoder does not exempt it from YouTube’s rules. YouTube says all live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Only stream material you created or are authorized to use, including music, game footage, and any third-party clips. A successful preview does not establish that you have the necessary rights or that the content complies with platform rules.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops at the end | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open its properties and check Loop. |
| The playlist source is missing | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match 64-bit OBS with 64-bit VLC. |
| The playlist ends instead of restarting | Loop Playlist is disabled. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream | The encoder connection may be misconfigured, the stream key may be wrong, or the channel may not be eligible. | Check the YouTube encoder setup and OBS stream settings; confirm channel verification and streaming eligibility in YouTube Studio. |
| The computer stops streaming unexpectedly | Local streaming depends on the computer, OBS, and network staying available. | Test the setup and ensure the computer does not sleep or lose its connection during the broadcast. |
