For a local rotating playlist, OBS Studio with its VLC Video source is the clearest starting point: add the files, preserve their order or shuffle them, and enable playlist looping. If you need the stream to continue without a computer running at home, a hosted option such as StreamNeo is a better fit; a dedicated encoder is another route.
Best options for rotating videos on YouTube Live
These tools send prerecorded video through a YouTube Live broadcast. That is different from looping a playlist while watching YouTube: here, the encoder or service supplies the video that viewers see in the live stream.
| Option | Where it runs | Rotation and control | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud | Upload a recording or build a playlist; StreamNeo loops it on YouTube. | Always-on operation without keeping a computer on; one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps. First day free. |
| OBS Studio + VLC Video source | Your computer | Playlist ordering, looping and optional shuffle. | Direct hands-on workflow, but the computer and stream setup must remain operational. |
| OBS Studio Media Source | Your computer | Loops one local file; it is not the multi-video playlist workflow. | Simpler for a single repeating clip; also depends on the local machine staying up. |
| Gyre or Upstream.so | Cloud services listed by YouTube | Options to investigate for continuous or 24/7 streaming; specific scheduling controls are not established here. | Check current plans and terms directly. YouTube’s listing is not a comparative review. |
| AJA HELO Plus | Standalone hardware encoder | YouTube lists its PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media. | Can schedule without a computer; dedicated hardware setup and current product terms need checking. |
Choose OBS when you want local control and can leave a computer running. Look at hosted automation when avoiding a dedicated PC matters more than managing the stream locally. Consider dedicated hardware if standalone operation justifies a separate device. YouTube lists OBS, Gyre, Upstream.so and AJA HELO Plus among encoder options: YouTube’s encoder guide.
Set up a rotating playlist with OBS and VLC
OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist. Its documented defaults are Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off, so a playlist ordinarily repeats in order unless you change those settings. VLC must be installed, and OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install VLC and OBS. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Open the scene for the broadcast in OBS. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Add the video files to the source’s playlist using the file controls in its properties.
- Set the rotation behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart at the first file after the last ends. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to keep the listed order; turn it on for randomized playback.
- Check source visibility behavior. OBS documents that the VLC source stops when it is not visible and restarts when it becomes visible by default. Keep it visible in the active scene if you expect playback to continue, or deliberately account for scene changes.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use YouTube’s encoder setup flow to create or select the stream and provide the stream key to OBS. Keep the key private. Configure and verify the encoder output in YouTube’s live control room before relying on the schedule.
- Rehearse before leaving it unattended. Make a private or unlisted test broadcast, confirm the files play in the intended order, verify the return to the first item, and check that YouTube receives the stream. This is especially useful for catching missing files, wrong scene visibility, or an encoder connection problem.
YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. Its guide presents encoder workflows for gameplay, overlays, external AV equipment and other productions; it does not prescribe a universal bitrate or resolution for every channel and upload. Set output according to your source, connection and YouTube’s current live setup guidance rather than assuming one setting fits all.
Repeat one video instead of rotating a playlist
For a single clip, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler than creating a VLC playlist. Add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS documents Loop as off by default. Use the VLC Video source when you need several files to rotate; the Media Source loop setting applies to one file. The settings are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Go live only when the channel is eligible
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming ahead of the date you need it. Check the channel’s status and YouTube’s current requirements in Get started with live streaming and the encoder guide.
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. A video being publicly available on YouTube does not automatically grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s rules and copyright enforcement still apply to a prerecorded live feed; review the rights for every clip, music track and other included material before scheduling it.

Troubleshoot common rotation problems
- The VLC Video source is unavailable or will not load: install VLC and confirm that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist does not return to the first file: open the VLC Video source properties and check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Videos play in an unexpected order: review the playlist order and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: check whether the source is hidden. By default, OBS stops the VLC source when it is not visible and restarts it when visible.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: confirm live streaming is enabled for the verified channel, check for restrictions, and confirm OBS is using the intended stream key. Initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream works in a rehearsal but not unattended: a local OBS workflow relies on the computer and stream setup staying operational. Review the machine’s power, network and scene state, or use hosted automation if you do not want a local computer to carry the stream.
Costs and terms to check
The cited YouTube and OBS documentation does not establish current prices for OBS-related hosting, Gyre, Upstream.so or AJA HELO Plus. Check each provider’s current pricing, limits and cancellation terms before committing; YouTube’s encoder listing does not rank them by price or reliability.
