What a soundbar improves—and what it cannot
Immersion
A subwoofer, wider front stage and height effects can make explosions, music and cinematic games substantially more involving than TV speakers. A package with a real subwoofer and rear speakers usually produces a larger, more enveloping field than a single bar.

Positional clarity
Atmos branding does not guarantee accurate enemy or vehicle placement. Results depend on the game mix, room reflections, processing mode, seating position and speaker placement. Dedicated rear speakers generally create more convincing rear-channel cues than virtual surround.

Competitive accuracy and latency
Virtual processing can smear transients or add delay. That matters in shooters, rhythm games, fighters and racing games. No latency ranking is defensible here without measurements for the exact model, firmware, input and mode. Use the bar’s game or bypass processing where available and compare it with a headset.
Voice chat
A soundbar supplies game audio, not a microphone. Use the DualSense microphone, a headset, USB microphone or another supported input for chat.
Which soundbar fits your PS5 setup?
JBL Bar 1000MK2: connectivity-focused, but verify first
Buy it if: you want a subwoofer and wireless surrounds in the box, and you need the bar to switch several sources. Current comparison coverage lists eARC, three HDMI 2.1 inputs, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X; What Hi-Fi describes a flexible, bass-forward package, with reservations about surround and subwoofer refinement (What Hi-Fi comparison).
Critical check: RTINGS reports the Bar 1000MK2 inputs limited to 4K/60Hz passthrough (RTINGS soundbar coverage). Until JBL’s exact US 2026 revision or an independent test confirms 4K/120Hz, VRR, HDR and ALLM, connect the PS5 directly to the TV instead of assuming the bar preserves those features.
Skip it if: you cannot verify those signals and your PS5 display is required to run at 120Hz.

Sonos Arc Ultra: best premium single bar
Sonos lists the Arc Ultra at $1,099 in the US, with fourteen drivers, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Trueplay tuning for iOS and Android, speech enhancement and eARC (Sonos Arc Ultra). It is spacious and detailed for games, films and music, and can later add a Sonos Sub and Era speakers.
There is no HDMI passthrough, so route PS5 → TV → eARC → Arc Ultra. This is excellent when the TV has enough HDMI 2.1 inputs and reliably returns multichannel audio. It is awkward when the TV has only two HDMI 2.1 ports or when you need the bar to switch consoles. Current comparison coverage also identifies no DTS support; confirm the latest specification if DTS sources matter.

Sonos lists Beam Gen 2 at $499. Its roughly 25.63-inch width, five-driver design and Dolby Atmos support suit bedrooms, apartments and small gaming rooms (Sonos Beam (Gen 2)). It uses HDMI ARC/eARC and has no HDMI input for direct PS5 passthrough. Sonos notes that some higher-bandwidth formats require eARC.
Beam delivers clear dialogue and an easy expansion path, but it cannot match Arc Ultra’s bass or scale without a subwoofer. Choose it for size and ecosystem convenience, not maximum cinematic impact.
Bose Smart Soundbar: compact dialogue-first option
Bose’s US page shows a $429 sale price reduced from $549, Dolby Atmos, TrueSpace processing, AI Dialogue Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in and Spotify Connect (Bose Smart Soundbar). Its approximately 27.34-inch width and 2.21-inch height make placement easier than taller premium bars.

It can add a Bose bass module and surround speakers, but virtual surround is not equivalent to discrete rears. Bose Personal Surround is designed for one listener using compatible Bose open earbuds, not for room-filling rear effects. The available evidence does not establish this bar as a low-latency PS5 winner, so choose it for dialogue and general use rather than competitive gaming claims.

Sony’s HT-A7000 documentation identifies PS5 compatibility, Dolby Atmos, eARC and optional rear/subwoofer expansion (Sony HT-A7000). However, it is a 2021-era product. Before purchase, confirm US availability, firmware, HDMI input count, 4K/120Hz and VRR passthrough, and whether the package includes rears or a subwoofer. Do not treat HT-A7000 as Sony’s newest flagship without that check; a current BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9, Bar 8 or successor may be the relevant comparison.
How to connect a PS5 without losing gaming features
Route A: PS5 through a soundbar
Use this only when the bar is confirmed to pass every signal your display needs.
PS5 → soundbar HDMI input → soundbar HDMI eARC/ARC output → TV eARC/ARC input
- Connect the PS5 to the bar’s specified high-bandwidth HDMI input.
- Connect the bar’s eARC/ARC output to the TV’s matching eARC/ARC port.
- On the PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video and verify 120Hz output, VRR, HDR and ALLM behavior.
- If any feature falls back—especially 4K/120Hz or VRR—move the PS5 to the TV and use Route B.
Route B: PS5 through the TV and return audio over eARC
PS5 → TV HDMI 2.1 input
TV eARC output → soundbar eARC input
This is the normal Arc Ultra and Beam arrangement. It preserves the PS5 video path, but consumes a TV HDMI port and depends on the TV passing multichannel audio and Atmos correctly. Enable eARC in the TV menus and use wired HDMI rather than Bluetooth.

- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Set HDMI Device Type appropriately. Select AV amplifier when the PS5 is connected directly to a soundbar or receiver acting as the HDMI audio device.
- Where available, set the number of channels to match the system.
- Set Audio Format (Priority) to a format the complete TV/bar path supports. Linear PCM can be preferable when multichannel PCM passes unchanged; Dolby formats may be appropriate when the bar and TV correctly support them.
Sony states that available controls vary with the connected devices and configuration (PlayStation audio-output guide). Do not confuse PS5 headset EQ presets such as Standard, Bass Boost and Shooter with soundbar 3D-audio modes. Do not call a bar “Tempest 3D Audio compatible” unless Sony or the manufacturer documents that exact claim.

Troubleshooting checklist
No 4K/120Hz, VRR or HDR
- Check the PS5’s screen-output information and TV input mode.
- Remove the soundbar from the video chain and connect PS5 directly to the TV.
- Use certified high-speed HDMI cables and avoid non-compliant switches.
Atmos does not appear
- Confirm the cable is in the TV’s eARC port, not an ARC-only port.
- Enable eARC and passthrough in the TV.
- Make sure the TV is not fixed to PCM or stereo.
- Verify that the game outputs Atmos and that the bar’s app or display reports the incoming format.
Audio delay or stereo output
- Enable TV Game Mode and disable unnecessary audio enhancement.
- Use HDMI, not Bluetooth.
- Compare direct-HDMI and eARC routes, then adjust lip-sync only after choosing the lower-delay path.
Blocked screen or remote sensor
Measure the bar against the stand and TV receiver before buying. Bose lists the Smart Soundbar at about 2.21 inches high; Arc Ultra is about 3.1 inches high. A taller bar can obscure the lower image or infrared sensor.
Weak height effects
Upward-firing drivers need a reasonably reflective ceiling, suitable height and an unobstructed position. Vaulted, very high or absorbent ceilings reduce the effect.
Rear speakers will not pair
- Complete the manufacturer’s app setup and firmware update.
- Place satellites near the router and bar during pairing, then move them beside or behind the seating position.
- Check that detachable JBL speakers are charged and that optional Bose or Sonos modules match the exact system.

- Buy Sonos Beam (Gen 2) for a small room, clear dialogue and a compact Sonos path.
- Buy Bose Smart Soundbar for compact placement, dialogue processing and broad streaming features—not as a proven esports-latency champion.
- Choose Sony only after identifying the current BRAVIA Theatre model, its firmware and its verified HDMI 2.1 behavior.
- Choose a headset instead when competitive positional accuracy and timing matter more than shared, cinematic sound.
