For longer play sessions, lower the refresh rate and frame limit to the lowest combination that still feels good and runs steadily in each game. You can also reduce screen brightness to a comfortable level. These adjustments may reduce system demand, but Valve does not provide a universal hours-saved figure; results depend on the game and how you play.
First, identify your Steam Deck model
Valve’s estimates are broad ranges, not predictions for a specific title. The refresh ceiling and battery capacity differ between models, so use the row that matches your device.

These specifications and estimates are from Valve’s LCD technical specifications and OLED technical specifications. The ranges are wide because runtime varies with the workload and display use; battery capacity alone does not tell you how long a particular game will run.
Lower refresh rate and frame limit per game
Refresh rate is how often the display can update; the frame limit caps how many frames the game tries to produce. Lowering both can reduce system demand. Valve’s Steam Support guidance says to lower refresh rate in device settings and cautions that setting a game’s rate above the display’s cap will not improve performance and may drain charge faster. The LCD model tops out at 60Hz; OLED tops out at 90Hz. See Steam Support’s guidance on frame-rate limits.

Choose a cap the game can hold steadily
Try a lower frame limit that the game can sustain consistently rather than choosing a high cap it frequently misses. The lowest setting is not automatically best: a smoother or more responsive image may matter more to you than additional runtime. Make the choice separately for demanding games and lighter ones.
Valve’s SteamOS 3.2 notes explain that a lower frame limit reduces system demand and saves battery compared with a game capped at a higher refresh rate. Valve gave 40Hz as an example between 30Hz and higher caps, but that statement concerned the options in that release and should not be read as a guaranteed outcome for every game or current model. The notes also describe saving refresh behavior per game. Menu labels and controls can change, so check the current Quick Access performance controls on your installed SteamOS version. Reduce brightness when comfortable
Lower the display brightness to a level you can comfortably see in your surroundings. This is a practical adjustment, but Valve’s cited specifications and settings guidance do not quantify how much battery life it saves, so treat it as a possible reduction in demand rather than a specific number of minutes or hours.
Test settings under consistent conditions
- Pick a game and a repeatable section of play, then note the battery estimate shown by the Deck.
- Lower the refresh rate and frame limit in the current Quick Access performance controls. Start with a combination the game can hold steadily and that still feels acceptable.
- If you want, reduce brightness to a comfortable level; change one setting at a time so you can tell what affects your experience.
- Replay the same section under similar conditions and compare the battery estimate. Use your own sessions to decide whether the trade-off is worthwhile; estimates can vary, and this is not a controlled runtime measurement.
- Save or repeat the settings per game where your SteamOS version offers that option.
Valve’s original hardware page estimated approximately 7–8 hours for lighter activities such as game streaming, smaller 2D games, and web browsing on the original 40Wh Deck. That is an example of lighter use, not a settings test or a forecast for current games. Valve’s Steam Deck hardware page provides that context.

Keep the 80% charge limit in the right context
Valve’s SteamOS 3.7.8 release notes say that setting a maximum charge of 80% can benefit long-term battery health for a Deck that is often docked or rarely depleted. Find the control at Settings > Power. This limits the charge available when you unplug, so it is not a way to extend one play session. Valve’s SteamOS 3.7.8 release notes describe the setting and its intended use.
