For most creators, the practical choice is OBS Studio with a third-party browser overlay, such as a StreamElements overlay or a Streamlabs option. OBS handles the broadcast; the overlay service or tool supplies alerts, chat, labels, goals, and effects.
What a stream overlay does—and what it does not do
An overlay is a visual layer placed over your live picture. It can include alerts, labels, a chat panel, goals, or other widgets. It is separate from the broadcasting program: OBS Studio captures and sends the stream, while an overlay editor or provider supplies the visual elements.
StreamElements says its editor can combine widgets into an overlay rendered in broadcasting software through a browser source. OBS itself does not provide stream alerts; its documented approach is to embed a third-party alert overlay as a Browser Source. OBS Project explains how to add alerts to a stream.
Which YouTube Live overlay workflow should you choose?
| Workflow | What it offers | Best fit if… |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio plus a third-party browser overlay | OBS can display third-party alerts through a Browser Source. You can use a provider’s combined overlay or manage multiple sources yourself. | You already use OBS and want to choose your overlay provider and source layout. |
| StreamElements editor and overlay | An editor for alerts, labels, goals, chat, widgets, and custom code; the finished overlay can be rendered in broadcast software through one browser source. | You want a browser-based editor and built-in widgets, or you are prepared to customize with code. |
| StreamElements SE.Live with OBS | StreamElements describes SE.Live as an OBS add-on with chat and activity-feed integration, plus YouTube overlay and AlertBox setup. | You want those integrations inside OBS and have confirmed the add-on’s current compatibility. |
| Streamlabs Desktop or OBS plugin | Streamlabs describes Desktop as an all-in-one studio and its plugin as a way to add alerts and widgets to OBS. Its plugin guide describes animated overlays, alerts, and transitions. | You prefer an integrated application or want to keep OBS while adding Streamlabs features. |
There is no universal winner: choose based on compatibility, the widgets you need, how much customization you want, and whether you prefer an integrated app or separate sources. These are workflow comparisons, not controlled performance tests; the cited vendor material does not establish a winner for CPU use, latency, visual quality, or viewer retention.

StreamElements: editor, widgets, and custom options
StreamElements describes an editor for combining elements such as an AlertBox and custom widgets, then displaying the result in broadcasting software as a browser source. Built-in options may be enough for a standard gameplay layout; if they are not, StreamElements also documents custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript widget development. Its Terms of Use do not establish unrestricted rights to every asset shown in an overlay library, so check the specific asset’s license.
SE.Live: check the requirement before installing
StreamElements’ YouTube guide to SE.Live describes account connection, OBS chat and activity-feed integration, and adding an overlay and AlertBox to a scene. The guide, updated May 8, 2025, lists OBS v31.x or newer as a requirement. Because add-on compatibility can change, confirm the current requirement on the vendor’s page before relying on that version guidance.

Streamlabs: integrated app or OBS plugin
Streamlabs documents both its Desktop application and an OBS plugin route for alerts and widgets. Its plugin guide describes animated overlay, alert, and transition choices. Streamlabs also describes other YouTube workflows, including browser-based Talk Studio; confirm current platform and feature requirements with the vendor if you are choosing among them.
How to add an overlay or alert to an OBS scene
- Choose the provider and build the overlay. In StreamElements, compose the elements you want in its editor, such as an AlertBox, labels, goals, or chat. If you need behavior beyond the built-in widgets, consider its custom widget route. Streamlabs documents an OBS plugin as an alternative to a browser overlay.
- Add it to the scene. In OBS, add a Browser Source for the third-party overlay when using a browser-based overlay. OBS also documents the Browser Source route for third-party alerts. For provider-specific setup, follow the provider’s current instructions; StreamElements describes rendering a composed overlay through a single browser source.
- Arrange the layer. Place the overlay source above the gameplay or camera sources in the scene, then size and position it so important game information and the action remain visible.
- Preview before going live. Check the layout at the canvas size you intend to broadcast. Trigger or preview alerts and check that text is readable, animations display as expected, and sounds are at an appropriate level.
Check permissions before using graphics, animations, or sounds
Do not assume that an asset is cleared for broadcast just because it appears in an overlay library. Check the license for each graphic, animation, and sound, including any attribution or use restrictions, and retain permission records where appropriate. YouTube says a live stream can be terminated after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike; if a stream stops, check YouTube Studio for strikes. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
