Start with stable gameplay, then choose an OBS output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your PC, upload connection, and streaming platform can sustain together. The official guidance available covers current Fortnite and OBS settings, not a verified preset for the original Chapter 2 build, so use the profiles below as starting points and test before going live.
What “best settings” means for Fortnite streaming
Streaming Fortnite asks one PC to render the game and encode a separate video for viewers. The right settings depend on your hardware and encoder, scene complexity, upload capacity, and the limits of the platform you stream to. A game running at a high frame rate does not mean OBS is sending that same frame rate: Fortnite’s rendered FPS and OBS’s output FPS are separate settings.
Epic’s Developer Community says, in its Fortnite performance documentation, that “There are currently no publishing requirements to hit a particular frame rate, however 30-60 FPS is ideal depending on platform.” That is guidance about Fortnite performance, not a required OBS broadcast standard. The official sources reviewed do not establish a unique preset for the original Chapter 2 release.
Stabilize Fortnite before tuning OBS
Start with a dependable graphics baseline
If Fortnite is hitching or struggling, Epic’s troubleshooting advice is to check that your PC meets the game requirements, set Quality Presets to Low, and set 3D Resolution to 100%. Raise individual graphics settings gradually only if gameplay remains stable. This is a troubleshooting baseline, not a universal streaming configuration.

Compare your hardware with Epic’s current PC requirements. The page separates minimum, recommended, and Epic Quality Presets specifications, and cautions that meeting the minimum does not mean the game will run at its highest settings. Close resource-heavy background applications if your PC is under pressure; meeting game requirements alone does not guarantee smooth simultaneous gaming and streaming.
Consider Performance Mode when resources are tight
Epic describes Performance Mode as a way to reduce memory use and ease CPU and GPU load in order to improve frame rate on supported setups, with lower visual quality as the trade-off. Epic also says high-resolution textures can be deselected through the Epic Games Launcher’s installation options. Its article gives historical 720p examples in which one listed laptop changed from 24 to 61 FPS and another from 18 to 45 FPS when comparing low scalability with Performance Mode. Those are results for the article’s example systems, not expected results for a current PC.

Choose a stream profile your PC and connection can hold
Use resolution, output FPS, bitrate, and encoder load as a set. A higher output resolution or frame rate can demand more from both the computer and the connection. A lower setting may make a stream more stable, but the better trade-off depends on the game action, audience, hardware, and platform. Treat these as starting profiles, not universal rankings.
| Starting profile | OBS output resolution | OBS output FPS | Upload guidance from Epic | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lower demand | 1280×720 | 30 | 3 Mbps | Try this when hardware or upload capacity is limited. |
| Higher motion at 720p | 1280×720 | 60 | 4.5 Mbps | Try this when motion smoothness matters and the system can encode 60 FPS. |
| Sharper image at 30 FPS | 1920×1080 | 30 | 4.5 Mbps | Try this when image detail matters more than 60-FPS output. |
| Sharper image and higher motion | 1920×1080 | 60 | 6 Mbps | Try only if both the encoder and sustained upload can manage the load. |
The upload figures are illustrative recommendations in the Epic Games Store beginner streaming guide, not guaranteed current requirements for every platform. Higher resolutions are likely to need more upload bandwidth. Check the current requirements of your selected service and measure sustained upload performance before settling on a bitrate. Leave headroom rather than configuring the stream at the full capacity of an unstable connection.

Set OBS Video and Output settings
1. Choose canvas, output resolution, and FPS
- Open Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution usually matches your monitor or game source. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution actually sent to viewers. They do not have to match: set the output to the profile you intend to stream.
- Set Common FPS Value. Choose the output frame rate you plan to deliver, such as 30 or 60 FPS. OBS warns that 60-FPS streaming can be much more taxing than 30 FPS; use the lower value if the PC cannot keep the game and encode stable video together.
- Test the game and stream as one workload. Fortnite’s own FPS can be higher than OBS’s output FPS. Watch for dropped frames, stutter, or worsening game performance when the stream is active, not just while playing offline.
2. Set encoder and bitrate under Settings > Output
- Open Settings > Output. Select an encoder compatible with your hardware and configure the stream’s video bitrate to fit both your sustained upload and your service’s current limit. The OBS overview cites 6,000 kbps as an example maximum for Twitch; it is not a platform-independent recommendation, and service rules can change.
- Set audio bitrate. OBS suggests around 160 kbps as guidance, with lower settings possible when upload capacity is limited. Check the platform’s current requirements as well as the video bitrate when calculating total outgoing traffic.
- Do not assume one encoder or bitrate fits every setup. OBS notes that system demand varies with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Compatible minimum hardware does not guarantee that a particular PC can stream smoothly.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can suggest a starting point, but its result is not proof that a stream is stable. Review OBS’s current streaming guidelines and test the settings with your real scenes.
Check upload capacity and connection quality
Epic’s beginner guide recommends a wired Ethernet connection for a strong, consistent connection. A wired Ethernet cable enables that connection, but it cannot improve a weak ISP service or fix an overloaded encoder. If you stream over Wi-Fi, test from the location and network conditions you will actually use.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Run a sustained upload test at the time you normally stream; a brief peak is not a reliable bitrate target.
- Leave upload capacity for other devices and ordinary network variation.
- Check the streaming service’s current bitrate and resolution limits; platform rules may differ and change.
Test before going live and troubleshoot by symptom
OBS recommends testing scenes and performance before a first live stream. Use a private or otherwise non-public test if your platform provides one, and assess the complete scene: Fortnite, overlays, alerts, webcam if used, audio, and encoding. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped.
Gameplay is choppy while OBS is open
- Reduce Fortnite’s graphics settings, beginning with Epic’s troubleshooting baseline of Low Quality Presets and 100% 3D Resolution.
- Close background applications consuming CPU, GPU, or memory.
- Try a lower OBS output resolution or 30 FPS; 60-FPS output can demand substantially more resources.
- Try Performance Mode if your setup supports it, accepting its lower visual quality.
The stream drops frames or looks unstable
- Check whether the issue is network-related or encoding-related in OBS’s performance indicators.
- If network capacity is the constraint, lower video bitrate and/or output resolution, then test again against your platform’s current limits.
- If encoding is the constraint, reduce output FPS or resolution, simplify demanding scenes, or try an encoder your hardware supports.
- Use Ethernet where practical and retest sustained upload; a cable does not repair an ISP-side capacity problem.
The stream looks soft despite smooth gameplay
- Confirm the OBS Output (Scaled) Resolution rather than relying on the canvas or Fortnite’s rendered resolution.
- Check the bitrate against the chosen output resolution and service limits. A higher resolution needs adequate bitrate and upload capacity to preserve detail.
- Test 1080p/30 against 720p/60 rather than assuming one is better: the choice depends on whether detail or motion is more important to your audience.
Audio or platform limits cause problems
- Confirm audio is being captured in the intended OBS mixer source and that its level is not muted or clipping.
- Check the platform’s current requirements for video and audio bitrate; OBS’s cited Twitch example is not a universal limit.
Respect copyright and YouTube live policies
If you stream to YouTube, use music, gameplay audio, images, and other material only when you have the rights or permission to use them. A live format does not make copyrighted material safe to broadcast. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming policies before a stream, especially if your format includes music or reused footage. A stable technical setup does not guarantee that content complies with platform rules.
