OBS Studio is a sensible first streaming app to try on a low-end PC because it gives you control over output and encoder settings, and its Auto-Configuration Wizard can suggest a starting point for your system. That is not a guarantee it will run faster than alternatives: the game, CPU, GPU, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect performance. Start with a short test of your actual game before choosing software or buying hardware.
Which streaming software should you try first?
Try OBS Studio first if you are comfortable adjusting settings and want a flexible starting point. OBS says that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record smoothly; CPU demand varies with the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system requirements page points users to the Auto-Configuration Wizard.
There is no verified head-to-head benchmark in the available vendor guidance showing which app is fastest on identical low-end computers. Treat the options below as choices to test, not a performance ranking.
Compare the main options
| Software | Published requirements or guidance | What that means for a low-end PC |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | CPU needs depend on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The Auto-Configuration Wizard can suggest settings. OBS system requirements | A flexible first option to test; the published guidance does not establish that it is faster than competing apps. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 and later and 8 GB RAM as minimums. Its setup guide recommends 720p at 30 fps for performance. It notes that workload, running programs, animated overlays, and plugins can require adjustments. Requirements · Setup guide | Consider it if you want its integrated setup and overlays, but minimum requirements do not establish that a demanding game will run smoothly. |
| XSplit Broadcaster | XSplit lists Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, a second-generation Core i5 or equivalent, and a GeForce or Radeon-class GPU with DirectX 10.1 support as minimums. It recommends at least 5 Mbps upload for HD quality. System requirements | The listed minimums are compatibility guidance, not evidence of low resource use. The upload figure is XSplit’s recommendation, not a universal requirement for every service or configuration. |
| PRISM Live Studio | Its Windows minimums are Windows 10/11 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1060 or equivalent, and Intel Core i3-9100 or i5-7600 or above. Its desktop page advertises low CPU usage. FAQ · Desktop page | The low-CPU statement is a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark. The listed GPU minimum makes it a poor default assumption for an older integrated-graphics PC. |
Minimum requirements can change, so check each vendor’s current page and confirm your operating system is supported before installing. A published minimum means the software may be compatible; it is not a promise that the game and stream will both perform well.

Why one PC struggles while another streams smoothly
Encoding uses either CPU or GPU resources
With x264, the CPU encodes the video. A hardware encoder such as NVENC shifts encoding work to a specialized component in a supported GPU, which can reduce CPU load. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, but whether it is available and useful depends on your actual GPU generation, drivers, and the game’s demands. Check the encoder choices shown in your streaming app rather than assuming an older graphics card supports a suitable option. OBS hardware encoding guide
Output settings and scenes add workload
Higher resolution and frame rate mean more work to encode. Animated overlays, browser sources, and complicated scenes add their own workload. The game itself competes for the same system resources, while other open programs can further constrain a modest PC.

Compatibility is not a performance test
Streamlabs’ 8 GB RAM minimum and XSplit’s listed CPU, RAM, and GPU minimums are vendor requirements—not comparative speed results. PRISM’s published GPU requirement is also a reason not to assume that its advertised low CPU usage makes it the lightest choice for every older system.
Set up a conservative test stream
- Check your PC and app version. Note your operating system, CPU, GPU, available RAM, and the encoders offered by the app. Confirm current requirements on the vendor’s site; requirements and support can change.
- Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Open OBS Studio and use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard, then apply its suggested streaming settings. If using Streamlabs Desktop, its setup guide recommends 720p at 30 fps as a performance-oriented starting point. Neither starting point guarantees smooth output on every PC or game.
- Choose an encoder your system actually supports. If a compatible hardware encoder appears in the app, try it in a short test. Compare it with x264 only if your system has enough headroom to do so. Hardware encoding can move work away from the CPU, but does not guarantee better quality or smoother gameplay on every configuration.
- Simplify the scene while diagnosing. Temporarily remove animated overlays and extra browser sources, close programs you do not need, and test the game you intend to stream. Add scene elements back one at a time so you can identify what changes performance.
- Run a private or otherwise low-risk test before a real broadcast. Check the stream output and gameplay together. If the stream stutters, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and test again; if gameplay suffers, check whether the game is already using most of the system’s capacity. Do not infer a universal best setting from a brief test in a different game.
Diagnose the bottleneck before spending money
- Gameplay and stream both stutter: the game, encoding, or both may be competing for CPU or GPU resources. Simplify the scene, close other programs, lower output resolution or frame rate, and compare available encoder options.
- Gameplay is smooth but the stream looks choppy: test a lower output frame rate or resolution and check the encoder selected in the app. A demanding scene or software encoding may be contributing.
- The app lacks a hardware encoder you expected: availability depends on the GPU, its generation, drivers, and app support. Check the hardware and driver support rather than assuming every GPU has a useful encoder.
- The broadcast disconnects or drops quality: check the connection and the streaming platform’s requirements as well as PC load. XSplit’s recommendation of at least 5 Mbps upload for HD is specific to its guidance; it is not a universal target for all platforms, bitrates, or configurations.
- A capture card seems like a fix: XSplit’s documented capture-card workflow sends video from a gaming PC to a separate streaming PC. That is a two-computer setup, not a general solution for a single low-end PC.
No particular GPU upgrade is justified without knowing which component is limiting your own system. Identify the bottleneck with a test of the game and settings you actually plan to use.
