OBS Studio is the best free program to evaluate first for most Windows 10 streamers: it is free and open source, supports Windows 10, and offers extensive scene and audio controls. XSplit Broadcaster is worth considering if its production workflow or paid multi-service broadcasting fits your needs. Streamlabs Desktop has a documented Twitch feature for sending multiple video qualities, but that feature has specific requirements and limits.
These distinctions come from official product documentation, not comparative hands-on testing. Your best choice depends on your PC, the controls you need, and where you plan to stream.
Which streaming software should you choose?

For basic scenes with a microphone and webcam, start by comparing the controls and setup that each app offers rather than assuming one is universally easiest or fastest. If you need multiple audio tracks, multi-service output, or Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting, check those exact capabilities before installing.
OBS Studio: the strongest free starting point
OBS describes itself as free and open source. You can build scenes from sources such as webcams and capture cards, set custom transitions, apply audio filters per source, and use Studio Mode, plugins, and scripts. Those tools make it a flexible option for gameplay, commentary, and other live productions.

OBS’s official product page showed version 32.2.2, dated August 14, 2026, when checked. The same page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support. Because versions change, check the OBS Studio product page for the current release.
Check your PC before you stream
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as system requirements. It warns that compatible hardware does not, by itself, guarantee streaming or recording capability. The CPU load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A demanding game plus multiple sources can be harder to handle than a simple scene, even on a PC that meets the listed minimums.

Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to generate a starting configuration for your PC and connection, then test it in the game or scene you intend to use. The OBS system requirements page explains the hardware caveat; it does not provide a universal performance guarantee.
When a capture card is relevant
A capture card is optional, not a general requirement for streaming from a Windows PC. It can be useful when the video source is external to that PC, and OBS lists capture cards among its possible scene sources. Compatibility for a particular card, camera, or console is not established here, so check the device maker’s requirements and software support before buying.

XSplit Broadcaster: consider it for its workflow or paid output
XSplit Broadcaster is Windows streaming and recording software. Its documentation includes custom RTMP output and recording with multiple audio tracks. The product page says simultaneous broadcasting to multiple platforms requires a Premium License.
XSplit’s plan comparison lists a free plan at $0, with output up to 720p and no watermark; multi-service broadcasting is among the paid features. XSplit may suit you if its production workflow fits how you prepare and manage a show, or if you need the paid multi-service output. The available product documentation does not establish that it is faster, easier, or better-performing than OBS on a given Windows 10 PC.

Streamlabs documents Enhanced Broadcasting as a way for Streamlabs Desktop users to send multiple video qualities directly to Twitch. Its support article, dated August 30, 2025, lists Windows 10 or 11 plus specified software, GPU, driver, display, and sustained upstream-bandwidth requirements. Consult the article’s full requirements before relying on the feature.

How to make the choice for your Windows 10 setup
- Choose your destination first. If you need Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting, verify that your Windows system meets Streamlabs’ listed requirements and that its Twitch-only, non-multistreaming limitation works for you. If you need multi-service output, compare XSplit’s paid plan terms with your needs.
- List the production controls you actually need. For scenes, per-source audio filters, transitions, Studio Mode, plugins, and scripts, OBS documents those capabilities. If you need multiple audio tracks in recordings or custom RTMP output, XSplit documents those features.
- Check whether your PC can handle the whole scene. Consider the game, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and number of sources together; a GPU requirement alone does not promise smooth output.
- Install and test before going live. For OBS, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test a private or otherwise low-stakes stream with your intended game, sources, and connection. Adjust based on the result rather than assuming settings that work for another PC will work for yours.
- Recheck current limits. Versions, plan prices, and feature conditions can change. Verify them on the vendor pages linked above before selecting a paid plan or relying on a specific feature.
