There is no single best YouTube streaming app for everyone. OBS Studio is a strong free choice if you want detailed control over scenes and sources. Streamlabs Desktop is worth considering if you want alerts, widgets, and overlays in a more integrated setup. XSplit Broadcaster, Streamlabs’ OBS plugin, and YouTube’s own webcam, mobile, and console workflows suit different needs. Choose based on what you want to stream, how much setup you want to do, and the features you actually need—not an unsupported claim that one encoder performs best on every computer.
Choose software for the stream you want to make
YouTube supports live streams from a webcam, mobile device, or encoder. Encoder software is especially useful for gameplay and screen sharing, external audio or video equipment, and productions with multiple cameras or microphones. A webcam or mobile workflow may be simpler when you do not need those controls.
| Workflow | Options to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Configurable desktop production | OBS Studio | OBS offers scene and source controls, audio filters, hotkeys, and plugin and script extensibility, according to the OBS Project. |
| Integrated alerts, widgets, and overlays | Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs describes Desktop as an all-in-one studio with these creator tools and YouTube-specific event widgets. |
| OBS with selected Streamlabs tools | Streamlabs Plugin for OBS | For existing OBS users who want Streamlabs features inside the OBS interface. |
| Another desktop encoder | XSplit Broadcaster | XSplit advertises drag-and-drop sources, OBS scene import, and webcam background tools. |
| Xbox, phone, or browser-based production | Streamlabs Console, Mobile, or Talk Studio | These target different device and production workflows; they are not equivalent desktop encoders. |
| Webcam-only or mobile stream | YouTube webcam or mobile workflow | An encoder is not necessary if the built-in workflow meets your needs. |
YouTube’s verified encoder list includes Streamlabs and XSplit, among other software and hardware products. Inclusion means they are listed as verified encoders, not that YouTube endorses one as the best choice.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That flexibility comes with configuration work: you decide how scenes, sources, audio, and transitions fit together. Streamlabs’ own comparison characterizes OBS as requiring manual configuration. If you enjoy tuning a production or need a specific scene setup, that is a benefit; if you want bundled widgets and alerts with less assembly, compare Streamlabs Desktop.
Check your computer with your actual scene
OBS Project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system guidance says CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and recommends using the Auto-Configuration Wizard to find appropriate settings. A simple webcam scene and a layered gameplay scene with browser sources and several filters do not impose the same workload.
OBS’s system-requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, so check the current download page for supported operating systems before installing. The OBS home page displayed version 32.2.2, dated 2026-08-14, when reviewed on 2026-10-03; release information can change.

Streamlabs: compare the exact feature and plan
Streamlabs offers Desktop, a Plugin for OBS, Mobile, Console, and Talk Studio for YouTube workflows. Its YouTube product page describes Desktop as an all-in-one studio with alerts, widgets, overlays, and AI-powered highlights; listed YouTube event widgets include Super Chats, Super Stickers, subscriptions, memberships, and viewer count. Streamlabs says Desktop is built on the OBS engine. Shared engine lineage does not mean the products have identical interfaces, included tools, or resource use.
Streamlabs says account authorization is used for its Desktop, OBS plugin, Mobile, and Talk Studio integrations, so users do not need to enter a stream key for those products. Setup instructions and product behavior may change; follow the current guide for the specific Streamlabs app you choose.
Free features, Ultra, and multistreaming
Streamlabs’ FAQ describes its basic suite as free and Ultra as optional. The FAQ listed Ultra at $27/month or $189/year when reviewed October 3, 2026; those are vendor-listed prices and should be checked on Streamlabs’ current page before subscribing. The FAQ names multistreaming and premium creator features among Ultra benefits.

Entitlements depend on the particular product and workflow. Streamlabs’ support guide says multistreaming to multiple destinations requires Ultra, while its YouTube page describes limited free Dual Output for different layouts and says Console requires Ultra to stream to any chosen destination. Confirm that the plan includes the exact number of destinations and workflow you need before paying.
XSplit and other ways to go live
XSplit Broadcaster is a further desktop option listed among YouTube’s verified encoders. XSplit’s product page advertises a free version, drag-and-drop sources, production across one or more displays, OBS scene import, and webcam background tools. These are vendor feature claims, not results from a controlled comparison.

Treat that as XSplit’s guidance, not a universal YouTube requirement: the connection you need depends on the stream settings and the reliability of your network. YouTube lists other verified encoders too, but verification alone does not establish that an unexamined product is a better fit for your workflow.

Set up a YouTube stream with an encoder
- Enable live streaming on your channel. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check your channel’s current eligibility and access in YouTube Studio before planning a first broadcast.
- Choose an encoder and build a minimal scene. Install OBS, Streamlabs Desktop, XSplit, or another suitable verified encoder. Start with only the sources needed for the stream—such as gameplay capture, a microphone, and a webcam—then add overlays or browser sources if useful.
- Connect and check your equipment. In the encoder, select the intended microphone, webcam, capture device, or headset and verify that audio meters respond and the preview shows the right source. YouTube presents these as common examples, not required equipment. A USB microphone, webcam, headset, capture card, or programmable controller such as Elgato Stream Deck is an optional purchase only when it addresses a real need in your setup.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Follow the encoder’s current YouTube setup instructions to authorize your account or configure the stream destination and key. Keep any stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Streamlabs’ supported integrations use account authorization according to its guidance, while other encoder workflows may ask you to configure a key.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check that the correct scene is visible, microphone and game audio are balanced, and the stream remains stable with your planned sources and other applications open. Make adjustments on the actual computer and network you will use; there is no source-supported universal winner on CPU use or ease of setup.
- Review YouTube’s rules and publish carefully. Use music, video, and other material you have rights to use, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright policies. A stream being technically possible does not establish that its content is permitted or eligible for monetization.
What to buy—and what you can skip
Physical equipment depends on the source workflow. For a basic voice-and-gameplay stream, an external microphone may improve the audio setup; a webcam is useful only if you want to appear on camera. A capture card matters when your source setup requires capture from another device, such as a console. YouTube also describes a mixer, multiple microphones or cameras, and a hardware encoder as possible components of a more involved production—not entry requirements.
- Consider: a USB microphone if your built-in audio does not meet your needs, headphones to monitor sound, or a webcam if you want a camera view.
- Consider a capture device only when: your source workflow needs one to bring external video into the computer.
- Skip extra hardware when: your current device and audio setup already produce the stream you want.
- Use a programmable controller only if: its shortcuts or plugins would make your live production easier to operate.
Performance, cost, and common setup problems
Performance depends on the full production
Encoder choice alone does not determine whether a stream runs smoothly. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, scene complexity, filters, and concurrent applications all affect demands on the computer. The reviewed sources do not provide a controlled OBS-versus-Streamlabs benchmark, so test the actual scenes and settings you intend to use rather than relying on a universal hardware claim.
Cost depends on the feature you need
OBS is free and open source. Streamlabs describes its basic suite as free, with Ultra optional; its FAQ’s October 3, 2026 listing is given above. XSplit advertises a free version, but verify current terms and the price of any specific paid feature on its own site. Include optional hardware only if it solves a defined problem, and check whether paid multistreaming or another entitlement is actually needed for your chosen workflow.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- You cannot start a first live stream: if live streaming was just enabled, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Check access in YouTube Studio and wait for the enablement process to finish.
- The encoder preview is blank or shows the wrong source: check the selected scene and source, then confirm the relevant display, capture device, webcam, or application is connected and selected.
- Viewers cannot hear you: confirm the intended microphone is selected in the encoder and that its audio meter moves. Check mute controls and the audio level before going live.
- The stream struggles after adding sources: simplify the scene, close unnecessary applications, or use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to find settings suited to the computer. Re-test at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- A Streamlabs feature or destination is unavailable: check the current entitlement for that exact app and workflow. In particular, distinguish paid multistreaming from limited free Dual Output.
- YouTube flags or restricts content: review the platform’s current copyright and live-streaming rules and use material you have permission to broadcast. Encoder settings cannot resolve a rights issue.
