There is no single streaming app that handles every part of captioning a YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube must receive caption data, either embedded in the video signal or through a supported caption-delivery workflow. For an eligible English-language stream at normal latency, YouTube’s own automatic live captions may be the simplest option. OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop can send the video stream, but choosing either one does not, by itself, configure captions.
How to choose software for YouTube Live captions
Think of a live broadcast as two related but distinct jobs: encoding and delivering captions. An encoder sends audio and video to YouTube. A caption workflow supplies the text data YouTube needs to display toggleable closed captions. YouTube’s guidance puts it plainly: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
Choose based on the caption path you need, not just the encoder’s feature list. Check language, latency, whether captions remain on the replay, whether you need human or automatic captioning, operating-system compatibility, setup complexity and current vendor terms. The official product pages cited below do not establish a comparative caption-accuracy score, complete pricing comparison or service-level comparison.
| Option | What is established | Caption implications | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live captions | YouTube offers native English automatic captions for eligible streams, subject to rollout and normal-latency conditions. | No separate caption product is needed when the feature is available, but language, eligibility, latency and replay persistence are limited. | An eligible English stream where YouTube-generated captions meet the need. |
| OBS Studio | OBS is open source and free to download; its help documentation describes connecting it to a streaming destination. | OBS is the encoder layer. Configure a separate caption delivery path or send supported embedded caption data; the cited OBS documentation does not establish automatic speech captioning. | Creators who want a flexible encoder and can configure a separate caption workflow. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs says Desktop can stream to YouTube Live. Basic tools are free, with optional Ultra features. | The reviewed Streamlabs guide does not establish built-in generation or ingestion of YouTube closed captions. Confirm the caption path separately. | Creators who prefer Streamlabs’ creator-tool interface and can verify a separate caption setup. |
| Streamlabs Plugin for OBS | Streamlabs says the plugin adds creator features to OBS, supports OBS 28.0.0 or later, and is available on Windows according to its guide. | The cited plugin guide does not claim to generate captions. | Windows OBS users who want Streamlabs overlays or widgets alongside a separate caption solution. |
| YouTube-documented event caption tools | YouTube lists Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst BCS, CaptionMaker and StreamText.Net in its event-caption guidance. | Check the current version, vendor setup and whether the service meets the event’s human or automated captioning requirements. | Events requiring a supported caption-delivery workflow or professional captioning support. |

Three ways to send captions to YouTube Live
1. Use YouTube’s automatic live captions
YouTube’s native live captions are English-only and are being rolled out to eligible English-language channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. Enable the option for each stream; it is not a channel-wide setting. See YouTube Help: Use automatic captions.
- Availability can depend on channel rollout and stream settings.
- Low or ultra-low latency, an unsupported language, poor sound, overlapping speakers or multiple languages can prevent captions from appearing or make them less useful.
- Live captions disappear when the broadcast ends. YouTube creates captions for the video-on-demand replay separately, and those captions may differ from the live captions.
This is the lightest setup when it is available and suitable, but it is not a dependable substitute for a planned caption feed when a stream requires caption control, another language or professional support.

2. Send embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
This encoder-level route embeds caption data in the video signal. In YouTube Live settings, enable captions and select the embedded 608/708 option, then configure the encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data. An encoder alone is not enough: the source must actually provide compatible caption data. YouTube says the standards can carry up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track. See YouTube Help: Live caption requirements.
3. Use YouTube’s caption ingestion workflow for events
For a captioner or supported caption-delivery system, turn on closed captions in the live setup, copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL, and provide it to the captioning software or service. Treat the URL as a credential: share it only with the intended caption provider. YouTube’s event workflow specifies adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and allows one caption feed per stream entry point. Follow the vendor’s current instructions as well as YouTube’s setup guidance: YouTube Help: Use captioning software.

What OBS and Streamlabs do—and do not establish
OBS Studio
OBS is a reasonable encoder choice if you want a flexible, free, open-source way to send a stream to YouTube. Its role is to encode and transmit the broadcast. To deliver captions, pair it with a compatible source of embedded 608/708 data or a supported caption-ingestion workflow; do not assume OBS automatically turns speech into YouTube closed captions. See the OBS Project Help page.

Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs says Desktop streams to YouTube Live and offers basic tools free with optional Ultra features. The reviewed guide does not establish that Desktop generates or sends YouTube closed captions. If you choose it, verify how your caption provider supplies data to YouTube before going live: Streamlabs’ YouTube streaming guide.
Streamlabs Plugin for OBS
The plugin guide describes creator features for OBS and specifies OBS 28.0.0 or later and Windows availability. It does not claim to create a YouTube caption feed, so treat it as an interface or creator-tools add-on, not a caption solution: Streamlabs Plugin for OBS.

Check these details before going live
- Caption route: Know whether you are using YouTube automatic captions, embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 data, or a caption ingestion feed. A configured video encoder does not prove that captions are reaching YouTube.
- Language and latency: Native live automatic captions are English-only and tied to eligibility and normal latency. Confirm that the chosen route supports the language and latency your broadcast needs.
- Replay expectations: Do not assume live captions will carry over. YouTube says its live captions disappear after the broadcast; replay captions are generated separately and may differ.
- Event setup: For ingestion, test the signed URL and caption feed before the event, allow the required broadcast delay, and account for the one-feed-per-entry-point limit.
- Audio quality: Clear speech, limited overlap and avoiding multiple simultaneous languages can help reduce issues with automatic captions.
- Current compatibility: Recheck YouTube and vendor setup instructions before the event, especially software versions and operating-system support.
- Rights and platform rules: Use audio and video you have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-stream policies. Caption delivery does not grant rights to the underlying material.
Troubleshooting missing or unsuitable captions
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic captions do not appear | The channel may not have the feature yet, the stream may not meet its language or latency conditions, or the per-stream setting may be off. | Check the live stream’s caption setting and eligibility; confirm English and normal latency. YouTube also identifies poor sound, overlapping speakers and multiple languages as possible issues. |
| Captions are inaccurate or hard to follow | Audio may be poor, speakers may overlap, or multiple languages may be spoken at once. | Improve the audio and speaker separation. If the event needs greater caption control or professional support, use a planned caption workflow rather than relying solely on automatic captions. |
| Embedded captions are not visible | The encoder may not be sending EIA 608/CEA 708 data, or the YouTube caption option may not be configured for embedded captions. | Verify the YouTube setting and confirm that the caption source is being passed through the encoder in the required format. |
| Caption ingestion does not connect | The signed URL may be wrong, expired or misconfigured in the supported software; the feed may also be attached to the wrong stream entry point. | Copy the current URL from the live setup, confirm the provider’s current setup instructions, and check the one-feed-per-entry-point constraint. |
| Live captions vanish from the replay | This is expected for YouTube automatic live captions. | Check the replay later for YouTube’s separately generated VOD captions; they may differ from the live text. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your use case is a prerecorded playlist running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool from OBS or Streamlabs: it keeps an uploaded-video stream going from the cloud, rather than captioning a live camera or microphone broadcast. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page, then start the free first day.
