For most casual players, Sudoku.com is the most feature-packed pick, while Sudoku▦ is a straightforward free classic. Choose NYT Games for a scheduled daily puzzle, Microsoft Sudoku for Irregular Sudoku, or Sudoku – No Adverts, Ad Free! if avoiding ads matters more than events and extras. These are recommendations based on current U.S. App Store listings, not hands-on tests of puzzle quality, ad frequency, offline behavior, or iPad usability.

Prices and app availability can change by country and over time. The U.S. listings and Apple Arcade information referenced here were checked August 16, 2026; confirm the live listing before paying.

Quick picks: the best Sudoku app for your kind of play

App Best for Puzzle supply and play style Cost and ads Important limitation
Sudoku.com – Number Games Most casual players who want lots of features Thousands of classic puzzles, multiple difficulties, daily challenges, events and statistics Free download with in-app purchases; U.S. listing showed a $14.99 no-ads purchase Ad frequency and whether the purchase removes every ad format were not established
Sudoku▦ by Tripledot Studios A simple free classic board Thousands of puzzles, four levels, notes, hints and statistics Free download with in-app purchases; ad behavior was not established “Free puzzles” does not establish an ad-free experience
NYT Games A daily Sudoku habit and broader puzzle bundle One new Sudoku daily, with easy, medium and hard modes Free download with in-app purchases; Games Monthly entries appeared at $4.99 and $5.99 in the U.S. listing Exact current plan access, archive terms and Sudoku entitlements need confirmation
Microsoft Sudoku Irregular Sudoku and Microsoft account integration Classic and Irregular modes, six difficulty levels each, plus three daily challenges Free download with a Premium upgrade; current ad and upgrade details were not established Cloud progress uses a Microsoft account
Sudoku – No Adverts, Ad Free! Players prioritizing an ad-free product and very hard puzzles Six levels, from Simple to Sudoku Master; listing describes unlimited Sudoku Paid/ad-free positioning; current U.S. price was not established Fewer documented daily, social and cloud features

The listings support a comparison of stated features and payment models, not a ranking of puzzle construction. A large rating count signals popularity, not proof that puzzles are better or that difficulty labels are well calibrated.

What makes a Sudoku app worth installing?

“Best” depends on how you solve. Before choosing, decide whether you need a steady supply of puzzles or a curated daily challenge, and whether you want the app to help, warn, or stay out of the way.

  • Puzzle supply: Look for unlimited or large collections if you play often. A daily-only format can be a better fit if you enjoy a routine. A larger number of puzzles does not by itself mean better puzzles.
  • Solving controls: Pencil notes, duplicate highlighting, undo, erasing and auto-check can make a board easier to manage. Auto-updating notes and mistake warnings can also reduce the challenge.
  • Hints: A hint may simply reveal a cell. That is different from explaining a technique, so do not assume an app teaches Sudoku unless it describes the reasoning.
  • Payment: “Free” in the App Store can mean a free download with ads or paid extras. Check whether the offer is a one-time purchase, recurring subscription, or access through a broader service.
  • Offline and device fit: App Store compatibility with iPhone and iPad does not confirm offline access, landscape behavior, Split View, Stage Manager, Apple Pencil support or accessibility performance. Those details are not established by the listings compared here.
  • Privacy: App Store privacy labels are developer disclosures, not independent audits. Review the current label and the developer’s privacy policy if data collection matters to you.

Sudoku.com: best for feature-rich casual play

The U.S. App Store listing describes thousands of classic puzzles, multiple difficulty levels, notes with automatic updates, hints, auto-check, duplicate highlighting, daily challenges, seasonal events, trophies or medals and statistics. It says puzzles have one solution and supports iPhone and iPad.

Why choose it

It combines ongoing puzzle supply with daily and seasonal goals, so it suits a casual player who wants more than a blank grid and a keypad. Its listed tools cover both note-taking and error checking.

Cost and trade-off

The app is free to download with in-app purchases. The U.S. listing showed a $14.99 “Sudoku.com No Ads” purchase when checked August 16, 2026. That is a dated price snapshot, not a guarantee; confirm the live listing and which ad formats the purchase removes before buying. The listing does not establish how often ads appear or whether they interrupt an active solve.

Skip it if: you want confirmed offline play, an ad-free free tier, or hints proven to explain solving logic. Those details are not established by the listing.

Sudoku▦: best for a straightforward free classic

Tripledot’s listing describes thousands of puzzles across Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert. It includes pencil mode, duplicate highlighting, auto-check, hints, an eraser, autosave, statistics and an optional three-mistake limit. The app is listed as designed for iPad.

Why choose it

Its stated feature set covers the essentials without making daily events or an expanded puzzle ecosystem the main draw. The three-mistake option gives players a way to add pressure, while notes and autosave suit longer solves.

Cost and trade-off

It is a free download with in-app purchases. The listing’s reference to free puzzles does not establish that play is ad-free, and the ad formats and frequency were not verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you need documented offline behavior, a confirmed no-ads option, or proof that hints teach techniques rather than reveal answers.

NYT Games: best for one daily Sudoku

The NYT Games app includes one new Sudoku puzzle each day in easy, medium or hard mode, alongside the newspaper’s other games. It is listed for iPhone and iPad, and the listing requires iOS 18.0 or later and iPadOS 18.0 or later.

Why choose it

Its strength is a daily schedule and a broader puzzle app, not an advertised endless supply of Sudoku. It makes most sense if you like a set daily challenge or already value other games in the NYT collection.

Subscription terms need care

The app is free to download with in-app purchases. The U.S. App Store listing showed Games Monthly entries at $4.99 and $5.99, as well as other New York Times subscription products, when checked August 16, 2026. Those multiple purchase lines do not establish which current plan unlocks Sudoku, whether access to an archive is included, or whether Sudoku access differs by tier. Check the plan details in the live listing before subscribing.

The App Store privacy disclosure says the app’s practices may include tracking and collection of purchases, financial information, location, contact information, user content, browsing history, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics. These are developer-provided disclosures, not an independent verification.

Skip it if: you want unlimited Sudoku puzzles only, or you do not want to sort out which subscription tier includes the access you need.

Microsoft Sudoku: best for Irregular Sudoku

The App Store listing describes freshly generated puzzles, six difficulty levels for Classic Sudoku and six for Irregular Sudoku, three daily challenges, multiple themes, cloud saving through a Microsoft account, and a Premium upgrade. It supports iPhone and iPad.

Why choose it

Irregular Sudoku changes the usual 3-by-3 box regions while keeping the row, column and region constraints. That makes Microsoft Sudoku the clearest choice in this group if you want a variant rather than only standard grids. Its daily challenges and themes add structure around the puzzles.

Account and upgrade considerations

Cloud progress is tied to a Microsoft account. The listing does not establish whether sign-in is required for ordinary play, what Premium currently unlocks, or how advertising works in the free experience, so check the current app details if those are deciding factors.

Skip it if: you do not want account-linked cloud features or are looking for a confirmed ad-free, offline-first experience.

Sudoku – No Adverts, Ad Free!: best for an ad-free-first choice

The listing positions this as an ad-free Sudoku app and describes unlimited puzzles across six levels: Simple, Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard and Sudoku Master. It is a paid product rather than a free ad-supported recommendation.

Why choose it

It is the most direct fit for someone who values avoiding advertising and wants a level beyond the usual beginner-to-expert ladder. The “Master” label signals a difficulty option, but the listing alone does not establish puzzle quality or how demanding it is in practice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check before purchase

The current U.S. price, last-update date, minimum operating-system version, landscape behavior and iPad multitasking support were not established here. Confirm the live App Store page before buying.

Skip it if: you want documented daily challenges, events, cloud sync, leaderboards or modern social features; these are not described in the listing.

Is Apple Arcade a good way to get Sudoku without ads?

Apple says Arcade games have no ads or in-app purchases, can be played online or offline, and work across iPhone and iPad. The U.S. Apple Arcade page reviewed August 16, 2026 listed $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year and Family Sharing for up to five people. Cancelling ends access to Arcade games; Apple says iCloud-enabled progress remains available if you resubscribe.

Those service-wide benefits do not establish that a particular Sudoku game is currently in the catalog. The Arcade page reviewed for this comparison did not name Good Sudoku+ or another Sudoku title. Check the live Arcade catalog and current App Store listing before subscribing for Sudoku; do not rely on older recommendations. Arcade is more sensible if you already want several included games than if you would pay solely for one Sudoku title.

How to choose without paying for the wrong thing

  1. Decide on the play pattern. Pick a large puzzle supply for frequent open-ended play, or NYT Games if one scheduled daily puzzle is the point.
  2. Choose the solving style. For familiar classic tools, compare Sudoku.com and Sudoku▦. For a variant, try Microsoft Sudoku’s Irregular mode.
  3. Check the ad and payment model. Read the current U.S. App Store purchase options. A free download is not proof of ad-free play, and a no-ads purchase may not be a subscription.
  4. Verify device and connectivity needs. If offline play, iPad multitasking, Pencil input, or a particular accessibility feature is essential, look for explicit current documentation or test it during any available trial period; the listings summarized here do not settle those questions.
  5. Review privacy and accounts. Check the live privacy label and whether features you want require an account. Microsoft cloud saving, for example, is described as using a Microsoft account.

Which apps suit common needs?

For a free download

Sudoku.com, Sudoku▦, NYT Games and Microsoft Sudoku all list free downloads with in-app purchases. That label alone does not tell you whether ads appear during a puzzle or how much content requires payment. Sudoku▦ is the simpler classic option; Sudoku.com lists more events and features.

For no ads

Sudoku – No Adverts, Ad Free! is positioned as a paid ad-free app. Sudoku.com also listed a $14.99 no-ads purchase in the U.S. on August 16, 2026, while Apple Arcade promises no ads for games in its catalog. Confirm current terms and availability before paying; no current Arcade Sudoku title is established here.

For daily puzzles

NYT Games offers one new Sudoku each day in three difficulty modes. Sudoku.com and Microsoft Sudoku also list daily challenges, but the available descriptions do not establish that these are the same format as a single curated daily Sudoku.

For difficult puzzles or variants

Sudoku▦ lists an Expert level; Microsoft Sudoku lists six levels for Classic and Irregular Sudoku; the ad-free app lists Very Hard and Sudoku Master. These labels are not directly comparable, and no hands-on evidence here establishes which app has the hardest or best-constructed puzzles.

For iPad

All five shortlisted apps are listed as supporting or being designed for iPad, but that does not confirm board sizing, landscape layout, Stage Manager or Split View behavior, Pencil support, or large-text accessibility. NYT Games lists iPadOS 18.0 or later; check each live listing for current requirements.
