What makes a 24/7 stream thumbnail effective?
A thumbnail is a quick visual explanation of the listing. A viewer should be able to recognize the stream’s subject without untangling a collage or reading a paragraph. For a continuous stream, that means choosing imagery that describes the ongoing experience—not a moment, guest, game, or event that viewers will not actually find when they open it.
- Choose one focal point. Make the main subject, character, scene, or channel identity immediately noticeable.
- Simplify the composition. YouTube recommends avoiding excessive complexity. Color and composition can draw attention, but too much visual competition can overwhelm.
- Use text only when it helps. Keep wording brief and use a font that remains legible when the image is reduced. Treat small-screen readability as a practical check, not an assumption.

- Represent the real stream. Avoid visual promises the stream does not fulfill.
YouTube says viewers usually see the title and thumbnail first, and its tips include targeting the intended audience, using the rule of thirds, applying branding and descriptive text where useful, and making text easy to read. Design the image for YouTube’s thumbnail specifications
YouTube recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 3840 × 2160 pixel image, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are supported examples. The cited computer help page gives a maximum upload size of 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB on mobile; limits can depend on the upload device.

- Build the image in 16:9 and check that essential details remain visible when scaled down.
- Keep important text and the focal point clear of unnecessary decoration.

A verified account is required to use custom thumbnails. YouTube’s eligibility and daily upload limits can vary by country or region and channel history; copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can affect eligibility.
Set or change the thumbnail for a scheduled live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- In the Manage workflow, select the scheduled stream you want to update.
- Edit the stream’s layout and add or change its thumbnail using the available controls.
- Review the scheduled stream preview after uploading. Check the listing in the relevant Studio and viewer contexts, especially if you offer horizontal and vertical formats.
YouTube documents horizontal and vertical live formats and differences in where viewers may discover them, but it does not provide a special 24/7 thumbnail format or a universal rule for how a thumbnail is cropped across every live surface. Do not assume the image appears identically everywhere; inspect the actual listing where possible.

Keep the thumbnail within YouTube’s rules
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube’s help page identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content among reasons a thumbnail may be rejected and receive a strike. Repeated offenses can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or lead to account termination. Review the current rules before uploading, and do not use a provocative or misleading image merely to attract attention.
