Best Upload Speed for YouTube Live Streaming: Targets by Resolution

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single upload-speed requirement for every YouTube Live stream. Match your available upload capacity to the bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate and encoder, then leave extra room for network fluctuations and other devices. YouTube recommends 20% headroom: for a conventional H.264 stream, that works out to roughly 17 Mbps available upload for 1080p30 or 21 Mbps for 1080p60.

How much upload speed do you need for YouTube Live?

Use the encoder bitrate as your starting point, not the speed printed on an internet plan. YouTube’s live encoder settings give recommended bitrates by codec, resolution and frame rate. Its network guidance recommends leaving 20% room above the stream bitrate. The upload targets below apply that margin and round up to practical whole numbers; they are calculations from YouTube’s recommendations, not separate official speed thresholds.

Stream setting Recommended bitrate: AV1/H.265 Upload target with 20% headroom Recommended bitrate: H.264 Upload target with 20% headroom
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 12 Mbps 14 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 15 Mbps 17 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 18 Mbps 21 Mbps 26 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 29 Mbps 34 Mbps 41 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 30 Mbps 36 Mbps 42 Mbps 51 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps 42 Mbps 50 Mbps 60 Mbps

Bitrate recommendations are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026. Upload targets are calculated as bitrate × 1.2 and rounded up. Actual available capacity can vary with connection reliability, network use and encoder behavior, so a target is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted stream. YouTube’s pages do not state publication dates.

Why codec and frame rate change the target

A 60fps stream generally needs a higher bitrate than its 30fps counterpart at the same resolution. Codec matters too: YouTube’s recommended rates differ for H.264 and AV1/H.265. Choose the row that matches what your encoder actually sends; don’t use an AV1/H.265 target if your stream is encoded as H.264.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the 20% margin means

YouTube’s recommendation is to leave 20% room beyond the stream’s bitrate. For example, 14 Mbps × 1.2 = 16.8 Mbps, so about 17 Mbps of available upload is a practical target for H.264 at 1080p30. This is headroom for the outgoing stream, not a claim that a particular internet-plan tier will always deliver that speed.

Measure upload capacity on the connection you will stream from

  1. Test upload, not download. Run a speed test on the same internet connection you plan to use. Download speed is often higher and does not tell you how much capacity is available to send your stream.
  2. Test under realistic conditions. Run the test at a time resembling your planned broadcast. Other people and devices sharing the network may use bandwidth that would otherwise be available to the encoder.
  3. Compare the result with the right target. Match the encoder’s codec, resolution and frame rate to the table above. If you send a primary and backup stream at once, add their outgoing bitrates together before applying headroom.
  4. Use Ethernet for a computer stream when practical. YouTube recommends a wired connection. Ethernet can provide a more reliable path than Wi-Fi, but it does not increase the upload capacity your internet service provides.

Encoder settings that affect YouTube Live stability

  • Bitrate: Set it to the recommendation for your codec, resolution and frame rate, while ensuring the connection has room for it.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS.
  • Keyframes: Set an interval of 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • HDR: YouTube’s guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR. Confirm that your encoder supports the codec and format you intend to send.

These are encoder and ingestion settings, not alternatives to sufficient upload capacity. A stream can have problems because of bitrate, format or keyframe configuration even when a speed test appears adequate.

Test the stream and respond to problems

  1. Before the real broadcast, run a private or otherwise suitable test with audio and movement similar to the planned content. A static screen may not reflect the demands of gameplay or other motion-heavy scenes.
  2. Watch YouTube’s Stream Health and encoder messages while the test is running. Treat warnings as a reason to inspect both network capacity and encoder settings.
  3. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the resolution or frame rate and configure the encoder for the new choice. Check bitrate, format and keyframe errors separately rather than assuming every ingestion issue is a speed problem.
  4. If you use a lower-latency setting, remember that YouTube notes lower stream latency can mean more playback buffering. Upload speed alone does not guarantee stable low-latency playback.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom What to check Practical response
Upload test is below the target Whether other devices are using the connection; whether the test was run on the intended network Reduce resolution or frame rate, or stream when more capacity is available. Re-test under realistic network use.
Stream Health reports trouble despite a seemingly adequate test Shared usage, connection consistency, bitrate, format and keyframe interval Use Ethernet where practical; check the encoder against YouTube’s recommendations and run another representative test.
Problems begin when backup streaming is enabled The combined outgoing bitrate of primary and backup streams Budget for both outgoing streams, then add the recommended headroom.
Playback buffers while latency is set low The latency trade-off as well as upload and encoder status Consider a less aggressive latency setting if the audience experience is more important than minimizing delay.

For a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube stream

If you are continuously sending a live feed from a local computer, the same upload-capacity principles apply: the outgoing stream needs enough sustained capacity, and a shared or unreliable home connection can interrupt it. For a pre-recorded playlist that should stay live around the clock, a cloud service is another approach. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.

StreamNeo is for uploaded videos sent to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
