Best Video Codec for Live Streaming: H.264 vs HEVC vs AV1

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most live streamers, H.264/AVC is the safest default because it is widely supported—but the best codec is the one your destination accepts and your encoder, packaging workflow, and viewers can handle. YouTube Live currently documents H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 ingest over RTMP/RTMPS; Amazon IVS specifies H.264 video ingest. Check your platform’s current requirements before going live.

How to choose a live-streaming codec

Start with the destination, not a codec ranking. A codec only helps if the ingest service accepts it and the rest of the delivery chain can package and play it. A platform may transcode incoming video for viewers, but that does not make every ingest codec, container, or downstream workflow interchangeable.

  1. Check ingest support and protocol. Confirm the codec and protocol documented for your specific platform and stream type.
  2. Check the whole workflow. Verify encoder capability, container and packaging support, and playback or transcoding behavior. Do not infer support for one platform from another.
  3. Match the available upload bandwidth. Use the destination’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then leave enough capacity for stable upload and audio.
  4. Consider the material and encoder. High-motion or visually complex scenes can need more bitrate. Codec name alone does not determine quality; encoder implementation and settings matter too.
  5. Account for HDR and latency. HDR may narrow codec and protocol choices. Keyframe interval affects startup and adaptive playback behavior.
  6. Test representative content. Check motion, audio, stream health, and viewer playback before relying on a long broadcast.

There is no universal same-content benchmark here that proves one codec always looks best at every bitrate. Treat efficiency claims as conditional on the encoder, settings, content, and delivery path.

H.264, HEVC, or AV1: which fits?

Codec Best fit Check before using
H.264 / AVC Compatibility-first streams and destinations that explicitly require it. YouTube Live and Amazon IVS document support. At the listed YouTube resolutions and frame rates, its recommended ingest bitrate is higher than the HEVC/AV1 recommendation. Actual quality still depends on settings and scene complexity.
H.265 / HEVC Use when the destination documents support and you need a more bitrate-efficient option or HDR. Verify protocol, container, packaging, and playback support for the complete workflow. YouTube’s live guidance recommends HEVC for HDR.
AV1 Use when the destination and downstream chain document support, especially when bandwidth efficiency matters. Support is not universal across ingest and packaging paths. YouTube’s cited live guidance does not support AV1 for HDR; AWS MediaPackage v2 supports AV1 output only on CMAF endpoints.

These are workflow choices, not a claim that newer codecs are automatically better for every gaming stream. Before switching, confirm that your encoder can produce the chosen codec in real time at your target resolution and frame rate.

YouTube Live settings and bitrate recommendations

YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). The following are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, not universal minimums:

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or HEVC H.264
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
4K/2160p at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

Choose the row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Your sustained upload capacity must accommodate the video bitrate plus audio and network overhead; if it cannot do so reliably, reduce the target rather than relying on a nominal speed test. YouTube says it automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. For 4K/2160p, its guidance says low-latency optimization is unavailable and the stream is optimized for quality at normal latency.

HDR on YouTube

YouTube’s cited guidance recommends 10-bit HDR using HEVC over RTMP(S), or HLS if the encoder lacks the required RTMP capabilities. It says AV1 is not supported for HDR in that ingest guidance. Confirm current platform instructions and the encoder’s HDR output format before configuring a live event.

Amazon IVS and managed AWS workflows

Amazon IVS

Amazon IVS streaming configuration specifies H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, with RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest. IVS recommends CBR rather than VBR and generally recommends a two-second keyframe interval. It allows one second for lower end-to-end latency, but warns that shorter intervals can mean more frequent adaptive-bitrate resolution changes and may increase buffering. IVS advises against intervals above five seconds. Consult its current service guidance for the resolution and bitrate applicable to your channel type.

AWS Elemental encoding and packaging

AWS Elemental MediaLive documents AV1, H.264/AVC, and HEVC/H.265 encoding, with rate-control choices depending on codec. Its guidance distinguishes CBR, which holds a specified rate and can sacrifice quality as scene complexity changes, from QVBR, which targets quality subject to a maximum bitrate. This is managed-service guidance, not a universal requirement for creator streams. AWS notes that visually complex material can require more bitrate to maintain high quality.

AWS announced live AV1 support for Elemental MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, and MediaConvert on September 12, 2024. AWS states that AV1 can deliver a similar viewing experience at lower bitrate than HEVC and AVC, potentially reducing bandwidth and CDN costs; treat that as AWS’s service claim, not a universal measured advantage. MediaPackage v2 documents AV1 in CMAF input/output workflows, and AV1 output only for CMAF endpoints—not TS endpoints. This is why encoder support alone is not enough to establish end-to-end compatibility.

What about Apple HLS and Twitch?

Apple’s HLS authoring specification lists H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, Dolby Vision, and AV1 among accepted video encodings for Apple-device HLS authoring. That broad list does not establish the exact profile, packaging, or device-version requirements for a particular stream; check the specification and target-device support before committing to a workflow.

Twitch-specific codec acceptance is not established here. Its broadcasting guidance surfaced general encoder notes and a recommendation to use CBR where possible, but current codec acceptance should be verified in Twitch’s own current documentation rather than inferred from older posts or from another platform.

Practical setup checklist

  • Use the platform’s current codec, protocol, resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, and keyframe guidance for the exact stream type.
  • Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval when following YouTube Live’s listed RTMP/RTMPS recommendations. Do not assume that setting applies unchanged to every delivery service.
  • Check the encoder’s real-time capacity at the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; a setting that overloads the encoder can undermine an otherwise compatible format.
  • Check sustained upload capacity against the video bitrate, audio, and connection overhead. Test with representative gameplay, movement, and audio.
  • For HDR, verify bit depth and protocol requirements at both the encoder and destination.
  • Confirm that the entire chain—ingest, packaging, and viewer playback—supports the chosen codec, particularly when using AV1.
