Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a conventional SDR YouTube stream, use H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS as the simplest baseline. YouTube also accepts H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, but choose a format your encoder and connection can sustain continuously. YouTube transcodes live input for playback, so the ingest format is not necessarily the format viewers receive. The official guidance does not specify a separate codec for India.
Recommended format and encoder settings
For a standard dynamic range (SDR) broadcast, set the encoder to H.264 video and AAC audio, and connect using RTMPS. This is a practical starting point, not a claim that H.264 is the only accepted option: YouTube’s live encoder settings also list H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Check that your encoder supports the chosen codec and can run it reliably for the full broadcast. YouTube’s encoder settings and its RTMPS guidance describe the supported options.
| Setting | Practical SDR starting point | Guidance and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; RTMPS encrypts the stream connection. |
| Video codec | H.264 | H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 are also listed for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Audio codec | AAC | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio; AAC is required for 5.1 surround sound. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s guidance specifies constant bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Recommended interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Frame rate | Match the source, up to 60 fps | YouTube guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. |
| Color and depth | Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are the SDR recommendations. HDR uses a separate workflow and should not be treated as an interchangeable SDR setting. |
For HDR, consult YouTube’s separate requirements rather than carrying over the SDR recommendation: HDR support has specific HEVC requirements.
Choose resolution and bitrate for your connection
Use YouTube’s bitrate figures as encoder guidance, not as a guarantee that a particular internet connection can hold the stream. For H.264, the listed recommended bitrates include:

| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not measured guarantees of stability. The best setting is the highest resolution and frame rate your encoder can maintain at the required bitrate while leaving upload capacity for fluctuations and other network use. YouTube’s streaming tips advise running a speed test and leaving 20% headroom. Its guidance puts the constraint plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”
- Test upload speed, not just download speed; upload capacity may be lower.
- Set the encoder bitrate below the connection’s usable sustained upload capacity, with the recommended 20% headroom.
- Test using the actual encoder, chosen resolution, bitrate, and streaming route. Network conditions can differ by ISP, route, and time of day; location in India alone does not determine a safe bitrate.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during a sustained test before relying on the settings for continuous broadcasting.
YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. A short successful test is useful, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted performance over a 24/7 period.

Set it up in YouTube and your encoder
- Enable live streaming in YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the stream creation process.
- Copy the stream key and server details. Use the stream key provided in YouTube Studio in your encoder’s live destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Configure the encoder. Choose RTMPS when available, H.264 video, AAC audio, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and SDR Rec. 709 at 8-bit. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to fit the tested upload capacity.
- Start the encoder and check stream health. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and that the preview and health indicators show no persistent connection or bitrate problem before going live to viewers.
- Keep the source, encoder, and network stable. A continuous broadcast depends on the content source continuing to play, the encoder remaining active, and the upload route maintaining capacity.
What changes when the stream runs longer than 12 hours?
Continuous availability does not mean YouTube guarantees a complete replay. YouTube says that if a live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. For a broadcast whose full archive matters, record a local copy as a backup. YouTube also documents limits on DVR rewind for very long streams, so viewers may not be able to rewind the full broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Copyright and live-stream checks
Before leaving a channel live for hours, confirm that you have the rights needed to use every video, music track, and other element in the stream. A format or encoder setting does not make content permissible. Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright rules, and keep a local archive if preserving the complete feed is important.

Troubleshooting an unstable 24/7 stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate | The selected bitrate exceeds steady upload capacity, or the connection fluctuates. | Run an upload speed test, reduce bitrate or output resolution, preserve headroom, then test again at the intended settings. |
| Encoder cannot connect | Incorrect stream key or server settings, or a protocol mismatch. | Copy the current stream details from YouTube Studio, confirm RTMP/RTMPS configuration, and keep the stream key private. |
| Video stutters while audio continues | The encoder may be overloaded or unable to sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, or codec. | Check encoder load and errors; lower output demands or use a codec the available encoder can sustain continuously. |
| The stream works initially but drops later | Long-run network variation, device interruption, or an encoder/source failure. | Test for longer under real conditions, monitor stream health, and ensure the computer, power, network, and playback source will remain active. |
| The stream is live, but the full replay is missing | A broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. | Make a local recording when the full archive is required; do not rely on a single long YouTube archive as the only copy. |
Or let it run in the cloud
