Best Video Format for Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube Live

MP4 with H.264/AAC is a practical source-file choice, but your encoder’s outgoing live settings determine what YouTube receives. Here are the recommended settings and how to test a loop.

For a prerecorded source file, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a practical compatibility-first choice. For the live feed itself, configure your encoder for YouTube’s ingestion recommendations: usually RTMPS, H.264, AAC, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. The source file’s container and the encoded stream sent to YouTube are separate choices: YouTube recommends MP4 for uploads, but does not require an MP4 source file for a live stream.

Source-file format and live-stream format are different

Use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio as a sensible local-file starting point. YouTube’s upload recommendations specify MP4 and list H.264 video with AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. They also recommend progressive video and 48 kHz audio. Those are upload recommendations, not a stated requirement for the file played by a live encoder. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations provide a useful compatibility reference.

The encoder or playback software reads the prerecorded file, repeats it, and sends an encoded live feed to YouTube. It is that outgoing feed—not simply the filename extension of your source—that must meet YouTube’s live-ingestion requirements. YouTube detects incoming encoder settings and transcodes the live stream into formats suited to viewers’ devices and network conditions. YouTube’s live encoder settings cover the outgoing stream.

Recommended settings for a standard RTMPS stream

For a typical SDR loop, RTMPS with H.264 video and AAC audio is a straightforward starting configuration. YouTube also accepts H.265/HEVC and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, as well as AAC or MP3 audio. Use the settings your encoder supports reliably; do not apply H.264 bitrate figures to AV1 or H.265.

Video and audio settings

  • Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s general recommendation for live ingestion.
  • Video codec: H.264 is a widely compatible starting choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps. Match the source when practical rather than creating an unnecessary frame-rate conversion.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube’s maximum is four seconds.
  • Picture format: Use square pixels and progressive scan. YouTube’s advanced recommendations also include two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, its recommendation is 48 kHz and 384 kbps.

H.264 bitrate examples from YouTube

Choose a target appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate. These H.264 values are YouTube’s current live-encoder recommendations; the minimum is not the target to choose when bandwidth can reliably support the recommended rate.

Ingest resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

For comparison, YouTube lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30, and 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended at 1080p60. The bitrate table includes additional resolutions and frame rates. Check YouTube’s encoder settings table for the combination you plan to send.

Choose quality your connection can sustain

A higher resolution or frame rate needs more upload capacity, but a theoretically higher-quality setting is not useful if the connection cannot hold it steadily. YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Test the connection and monitor the actual upload bitrate rather than relying on a headline speed-test result. Encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips explain the recommendations.

For many prerecorded loops, keeping the source’s native resolution and frame rate is a sensible way to avoid needless conversion. If upload capacity is marginal, choose a lower supported resolution or frame rate and a bitrate that remains stable, rather than repeatedly dropping frames at a higher setting.

When HLS is the right ingestion option

HLS is a specialized alternative, particularly for HDR streaming or codecs not supported by RTMP. It supports H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS requires HTTPS POST/PUT and TS segments; byte ranges are unsupported, and its rolling playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments. Because HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed, it has higher latency. For a simple prerecorded loop, RTMPS is usually the less complicated choice.

See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions if your workflow specifically needs HLS.

Set up and test the loop before going live

  1. Prepare the source: Make an MP4 copy with H.264 video and AAC audio if you want a compatibility-oriented baseline. Check that playback has the intended duration, aspect ratio, audio, and start and end points.
  2. Configure the playback encoder: Choose the source file and configure its loop behavior. Looping is handled by the encoder or playback software; YouTube’s ingestion guidance does not specify a universal looping control or promise that every loop will be gap-free. Confirm the loop behavior in the software you use.
  3. Set the outgoing stream: Select RTMPS, a supported codec, CBR, the intended resolution and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the selected codec and output settings.
  4. Connect YouTube: In YouTube Studio, use the stream key for the live event and enter it in the encoder’s streaming settings. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish or share it. YouTube explains stream keys and encoder setup.
  5. Preview before starting: Send a test feed, check the YouTube preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring audio and video. Review YouTube’s streaming tips.

Copyright and channel-policy checks still apply

Using a technically compatible file does not establish that you have permission to stream its contents or that a channel will qualify for monetization. Before looping a game soundtrack, gameplay recording, trailer, or other material, check the relevant rights and YouTube policies. A format recommendation is not a copyright or monetization guarantee.

Troubleshoot common problems

YouTube does not receive the stream

  • Check that the encoder is using the stream key for the intended live event and that the key was copied correctly.
  • Confirm the encoder is sending through the selected ingestion protocol and that the outgoing video and audio codecs are supported for it.
  • If you exposed the stream key, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

The stream buffers, drops frames, or loses stability

  • Check the encoder’s actual upload bitrate and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
  • Lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the configured output.
  • Check for congestion or interruptions on the upload connection, then test again before returning to the live event.

Video appears soft or the motion looks wrong

  • Verify the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate match the intended settings and that the chosen bitrate is suitable for that codec and output.
  • Avoid assuming an H.264 bitrate target is appropriate for AV1 or H.265; use YouTube’s table for the selected codec.

Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync

  • Check that the source has an audio track and that the encoder is sending a supported audio codec.
  • Verify the sample rate and bitrate against the audio-channel recommendation, then listen to the preview before going live.

The loop has a pause or visible jump

Inspect the source’s final and opening frames and the playback software’s repeat behavior. A seamless transition depends on the file and the software’s loop implementation; YouTube’s live-ingestion settings alone cannot make a discontinuous source seamless.
