For most creators making gaming videos, DaVinci Resolve is the strongest starting point: its capable free edition brings editing, color, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production together on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose Adobe Premiere for professional or team workflows, CapCut for fast social clips, and Final Cut Pro if you edit on a Mac and prefer Apple’s approach. The best choice depends on what you make and how much setup, learning, and ongoing cost you will accept.
Here, “video game editor” means software for editing recorded gameplay—not game-development tools or level editors. Product and price details below were checked August 16, 2026; prices are U.S. signals where stated and can vary by region, tax, eligibility, and promotion.
Quick picks for gaming creators
| Editor | Best for | Price model | Platforms | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DaVinci Resolve | Most serious creators; long-form, cinematic edits, and montages | Free edition; Studio is US$295 one-time on Blackmagic’s U.S. product page, checked August 16, 2026 | Windows, macOS, Linux | More to learn; performance depends on the footage and computer |
| Adobe Premiere | Professional creators, freelancers, and teams using Adobe tools | U.S. individual Premiere plan: US$22.99/month with an annual commitment billed monthly; seven-day trial | Desktop and iPhone workflow | Subscription and account requirements |
| CapCut | Shorts, TikTok, Reels, and quick caption-heavy clips | Free and paid-feature availability varies; no dependable U.S. price established here | Desktop and mobile-oriented workflow | Check current plan limits; less suited by default to complex long projects |
| Final Cut Pro | Mac users who want an Apple-native editing workflow | Verify current Apple purchase and trial terms | Mac | Not for Windows or Linux; project handoff needs consideration |
| Filmora | Beginners who want guided desktop editing and templates | Verify subscription, perpetual-license, watermark, and AI-credit terms | Check the current vendor page for supported platforms | Less suited to highly customized professional workflows |
| Vegas Pro | Windows editors who prefer a traditional timeline workflow | Verify current version and subscription or perpetual terms | Windows-oriented | Less compelling for cross-platform or Adobe-centered collaboration |
These are workflow-based recommendations, not the result of a controlled performance test. Official product pages should be consulted for changing feature, compatibility, and pricing details.
Choose by the kind of gaming video you make
Long-form YouTube videos
For a full-length playthrough, review, or story-driven video, prioritize organized media bins, dependable long timelines, separate audio tracks, captions, and reusable graphics. Resolve is the strongest value pick if you are willing to learn it; Premiere suits creators who already rely on Adobe apps or exchange work with clients. Final Cut Pro is a credible Mac choice. Filmora can be easier to approach for simpler edits.

Twitch highlights and stream recaps
Hours of source footage make scrubbing, markers, audio separation, and proxy workflows more important than a large effects library. Resolve and Premiere are sensible shortlists for substantial stream edits. CapCut can work for a brief highlight, but it should not be assumed to be the best option for a multi-hour project.
Esports montages
Montages benefit from keyframes, speed changes, masking, text animation, audio synchronization, and control over slow motion. Resolve Studio and Premiere are strong candidates for advanced work, with Final Cut Pro also worth considering on Mac. None automatically makes a montage look better: source footage, timing, and editing choices matter.
TikTok, Shorts, and Reels
For a fast vertical edit, CapCut is the practical first choice: templates, captions, and social-oriented tools can reduce setup. Premiere offers desktop and iPhone continuity. Resolve can handle more elaborate work, but may take more setup for a quick social clip. Check which features and exports are included in the current CapCut plan and platform version.
Cinematic or story-driven edits
Resolve is particularly well suited to a project that needs editing, color work, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post in one application. Blackmagic describes those functions and the two editions on its Resolve product page. Premiere is a strong alternative when the project is part of an Adobe-based production workflow.

What each editor does well—and where it may not fit
DaVinci Resolve: best overall and best free starting point
Resolve combines editing, color, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production. Blackmagic lists Resolve 21 and support for Windows, macOS, and Linux on its official product page. The free edition is unusually capable; Studio is an optional paid upgrade.
- Good fit: creators who want room to grow, a no-subscription starting point, integrated audio tools, or Linux support.
- Important limit: the free edition supports 8-bit video up to Ultra HD 3840×2160 at up to 60 fps. Blackmagic lists Studio features including additional AI tools, effects, noise reduction, text-based editing, and 10-bit video up to 120 fps at resolutions above 4K.
- Trade-off: Resolve has a steeper learning curve than social-first or template-led editors, and demanding codecs or effects may require proxies or a more capable computer.
- Price: free edition; Studio was listed at US$295 one-time on Blackmagic’s U.S. page on August 16, 2026. Check the page for current availability and regional terms.
Adobe Premiere: best for professional workflows and teams
Adobe presents Premiere as an editor for frame-accurate work, layered audio, color, effects, AI-assisted workflows, and movement between desktop and iPhone. It is a natural choice if you already use Adobe applications or need to work with people who share Premiere projects.
- Good fit: freelancers, creator teams, and editors using tools such as After Effects, Photoshop, or Audition.
- Trade-off: Premiere requires a subscription. Adobe’s U.S. page listed the individual Premiere plan at US$22.99 per month with an annual commitment billed monthly and a seven-day trial; plan terms and regional pricing can change.
- System reference: Adobe’s requirements page, published April 15, 2026, lists 8 GB RAM as a Windows minimum and 16 GB for HD as a recommendation; it recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. It also lists at least 4 GB of GPU memory for Windows. These are published requirements, not a promise of smooth playback for every codec.
- Activation: Adobe states that an account and internet connection are required for activation and use. Review its current technical requirements before installing.
For current product capabilities and plan terms, see Adobe’s Premiere page and plans page.
CapCut: best for fast social-first clips
CapCut suits creators who want to assemble a short gaming clip, add captions or a template, and publish in a vertical format. Its ease and social focus are useful for quick edits, especially when working across mobile and desktop.

- Trade-off: feature access and export limits can differ by plan, platform, and region. Confirm current terms for the exact device and feature you plan to use; no reliable official U.S. price is established here.
- Consider another editor: for intricate long-form media organization, advanced audio post, or a predictable professional handoff, compare it with Resolve or Premiere rather than assuming a short-form tool will suit the whole project.
See CapCut’s desktop editor and official site.
Final Cut Pro: best for Mac users who prefer Apple’s workflow
Final Cut Pro is the Mac-specific option to shortlist if you want an Apple-native editor and prefer a purchase model other than Premiere’s subscription. It can suit polished gameplay videos and long-form edits, but it is not a cross-platform project choice. Check Apple’s official page for current compatibility, price, and trial terms before buying; those details are not established here.
Filmora: a guided option for newer desktop editors
Filmora is worth considering if Resolve feels like too much to learn and you want a more guided, template-oriented desktop workflow. Its trade-off is less room for deeply customized professional work. Before purchase, check whether the offer is subscription or perpetual, and confirm watermark, export, and AI-credit conditions on Filmora’s official site.
Vegas Pro: a Windows-oriented alternative
Vegas Pro may suit Windows creators who prefer a conventional timeline editor. It is less attractive if you need Linux or macOS support, or if collaborators expect Adobe or Resolve projects. Its current version and purchase options should be checked on the official U.S. product page.
Free and open-source alternatives
Shotcut, Kdenlive, and OpenShot are options for people who prioritize free or open-source software, including Linux users who do not need Resolve’s workflow. Available comparisons do not establish a current performance ranking for gaming footage, so test the version you plan to use with your own recordings—especially high-frame-rate and variable-frame-rate files.

- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Match the editor to your computer, footage, and budget
Platform and workflow
- Windows: Resolve, Premiere, CapCut, Filmora, and Vegas Pro are options to compare.
- macOS: compare Resolve, Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and CapCut.
- Linux: Resolve, Kdenlive, Shotcut, and OpenShot merit consideration.
- Mobile-first: CapCut is an obvious candidate; Adobe also describes an iPhone workflow for Premiere.
Understand the real cost
Compare the payment model, not just the headline price. Resolve’s free edition can cover many creators’ needs, while Studio’s listed U.S. price is a one-time purchase. Premiere’s listed individual plan is a recurring subscription. CapCut, Filmora, Final Cut Pro, and Vegas Pro have plan or purchase details that should be verified on the vendor page for your region and version. Cloud storage, AI features, stock media, templates, plug-ins, and optional services may add costs; they are not necessarily included with an editor license.
Do not confuse game performance with editing performance
A PC that runs a game smoothly can still struggle with its recording. Playback depends on the source codec and profile, hardware decoding, CPU and GPU, storage speed, effects, and timeline settings. Adobe’s published recommendations—16 GB RAM for HD and at least 32 GB for 4K or higher—are a useful reference for Premiere, not a universal minimum for every editor or a guarantee of performance.
- Keep active media and cache on a fast SSD when possible.
- Lower preview resolution or generate proxies/optimized media for difficult footage.
- Use hardware decoding where supported, and close unnecessary background applications.
- Render demanding effects before final export if playback becomes difficult.
- Keep a separate archive of original recordings rather than relying on a slow drive for active editing.
Check more than resolution and frame rate
Before committing to an editor, try representative clips from your own setup: OBS, NVIDIA capture, console capture, or another source. Include the formats and conditions you actually use—H.264 or H.265/HEVC, 1080p60, 1440p60, 4K60, high-frame-rate footage, HDR, and separate microphone and game-audio tracks. Codec support means a file can be imported; it does not guarantee smooth playback or a correct-looking export.
Resolve’s free-versus-Studio format limits matter if you need 10-bit, frame rates above 60 fps, or resolutions above 4K. Do not assume that every edition of an editor supports every source and delivery format equally.

Keep audio and color under control
For gaming videos, intelligible speech and balanced game sound can matter more than elaborate effects. Keep game audio, microphone, Discord, and music on separate tracks while editing. Check for duplicate microphone recordings, synchronize separately recorded sources, and listen to the final mix at a sensible level. Resolve’s integrated Fairlight audio environment is one reason it can serve creators who want editing and audio post-production together.
HDR footage needs an appropriate project and export color workflow. If HDR gameplay looks washed out or too dark, check whether the source is HDR, whether the editor edition supports the workflow you need, and whether your target is HDR or ordinary SDR video. Importing an HDR clip is not the same as correctly editing and delivering HDR.
Recording software is not an editor
OBS Studio, NVIDIA capture or Instant Replay, Xbox Game Bar, console capture systems, and clipping services record gameplay. Resolve, Premiere, CapCut, and the other editors above assemble and polish those recordings. A typical workflow is capture, organize, edit, mix audio, add captions or effects, export, then publish. You can use a console’s built-in capture without buying a separate capture application, but you still need an editor if you want to assemble and refine the clips.
Prevent common gameplay-editing problems
Audio drifts out of sync or motion stutters
Some screen recordings and console captures use variable frame rates. That can cause sync drift, uneven motion, or duration problems in an editor. Check the source file’s frame-rate behavior; create the project at the intended delivery frame rate; and, if the recording remains troublesome, transcode it to a constant-frame-rate intermediate before editing. Recheck audio sync after export. Menu names and procedures differ by editor version, so use the current documentation for the software you choose.
Separate recordings do not line up
When game audio, microphone audio, Discord, or webcam sound is recorded separately, preserve each source until the mix is right. A clap or other clear sync marker helps align tracks; waveforms can also help. Check for duplicate microphone audio, stable sample rates, and sync again after export.
The project is difficult to hand off or restore
If you may hire an editor later, keep the original media and project files together and retain the supporting assets: fonts, graphics, music licenses, LUTs, plug-in details, final exports, and proxy-to-original relinking information. Ask collaborators which editor and interchange formats they can actually use before choosing a workflow. Resolve’s Blackmagic Cloud collaboration and Adobe’s Creative Cloud workflows are different models; cloud storage or shared projects can involve account, storage, privacy, offline-access, and upload considerations.
Music or footage raises rights questions
An editor does not grant permission to use the game’s music, a template’s audio, third-party clips, or stream alerts. Check rights and platform rules separately from software features, and retain license details for any music or media used.
