For an island that shapes an entire adventure, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’s Great Sea is the strongest pick. For a place to make your own, Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers a different kind of island appeal. This ranking favors settings that change how play works, feel distinctive, and leave a memorable image or activity—not a supposed industry consensus.
How these video game islands are ranked
The order weighs three things: how much island geography shapes play, how clearly the setting feels like a place with its own locations and inhabitants, and whether the main appeal is exploring a designed world or shaping a personal one. The ranking is an editorial judgment, not an objective score or a consensus list.
1. The Great Sea islands — The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Wind Waker makes islands the organizing idea of its world, rather than using one island as a backdrop. Nintendo developer Eiji Aonuma recalled that the team chose a sea setting early: “Without much hesitation, we decided rather early on to set the game among the seas.” He also described developing ideas about the islands and the people who live on them in Nintendo’s development interview.
That gives the Great Sea its edge in this ranking: the setting links exploration to a chain of places and their inhabitants. Nintendo’s official game page establishes Link’s starting point as a tiny island. The lasting image is not simply an isolated shore, but an adventure framed by the sea and the islands within it.

The Wind Waker originally appeared on GameCube; its HD edition is a separate Wii U release. These are distinct versions, not a single release across both platforms.
2. Skyloft and the smaller sky isles — The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
Skyloft stands apart because its islands are in the sky, not an ocean. Nintendo describes a town spread across larger connected islands, home to humans living alongside Loftwings, while smaller isles offer discoveries. That mix makes the setting more than a floating town: it gives exploration a vertical, scattered-island character.

Its strongest hook is the contrast between a lived-in home base and smaller places to investigate. Skyloft ranks below the Great Sea because the supplied official description gives a narrower picture of island variety and inhabitants, but it offers a distinct alternative to sea-bound island adventures. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the island is less an authored adventure landscape than a personal space to tend and customize. Nintendo highlights collecting bugs, decorating, beach activities, and exploring. Its island guide also notes that an island has a specialty fruit, and players can plant other varieties brought from other islands.
