For most Windows users who want live voice effects and a soundboard in Discord, start with Voicemod; for a simple free Windows option, consider Clownfish; and for traditional effects with more customization, compare Voxal. Discord does not change your voice itself: a separate app processes the microphone, and Discord must receive that processed signal—usually through the app’s virtual microphone.
The old 19-item list mixes live desktop software with mobile recording apps and audio-routing tools. Those are not interchangeable. This guide separates genuine live options from tools that can help with routing or recording, and avoids calling a product “best” without a specific use case. Features, pricing, privacy terms, and operating-system support can change, so check the vendor’s current details before installing or paying.

Select the app’s processed microphone in Discord rather than assuming that launching the app changes Discord’s input automatically.

Before choosing a free or paid tier, check the vendor’s current premium information for the effects available, usage limits, billing terms, and whether features you want require an account. Current prices, platform support, and privacy or processing details are not established here. It is a weaker fit if you require a permanently unrestricted, offline, no-account tool.
Clownfish: a simple free Windows option
Clownfish is a system-level Windows voice changer with preset effects. System-level processing can affect more than Discord: other apps using the microphone may receive the changed signal too. Its appeal is simplicity, not a broad modern voice library or deep customization. Check the official Clownfish page for current Windows support and download details; older Windows compatibility statements should not be taken as proof of current support.
Voxal: traditional effects and more control
NCH describes Voxal as a real-time microphone voice changer for games and chat apps, including Discord, with preset and custom voices, effects chains, hotkeys, background effects, and support for recorded audio. See the product page and its compatibility explanation. NCH’s compatibility information is not a guarantee for every computer, microphone, or Discord configuration.
NCH says the free version is for non-commercial home use and has limitations; full functionality requires purchase. Read its licensing explanation before relying on “free,” especially for work or commercial use. NCH’s version history lists different release sequences for Windows and macOS, including Windows 8.00 uploaded January 17, 2023 and macOS 10.00 uploaded May 5, 2025; check the version history for the platform you use rather than assuming the versions match.

For Voxal preview playback, NCH documents Options → Preview Playback Device, then selecting a device and choosing OK. That changes preview playback; it does not select Discord’s microphone input. See NCH’s preview-device instructions.
Voice.ai: investigate carefully for AI conversion
Voice.ai is the candidate here for readers specifically interested in AI-oriented conversion. AI effects make voice naturalness only one part of the decision: check the current vendor information for supported operating systems, account requirements, voice library rules, hardware requirements, free limits, latency, and whether processing is local, cloud-based, or mixed. Those details are not established here, so this is not a blanket recommendation for privacy-sensitive users or low-spec PCs.
MorphVOX: an established traditional alternative
MorphVOX is worth comparing if you prefer conventional voice morphing and presets over an AI voice marketplace. The vendor page is the place to verify current editions, platform support, licensing, and whether the edition you choose installs a virtual microphone for Discord. “MorphVOX Junior” is the correct product-family name; it should not be confused with a separate “Morphvoc Jr” product.

Voicemeeter: advanced routing, not a voice generator
Voicemeeter mixes and routes audio. It can be useful when you need to combine a microphone, an effects processor, music, and Discord, but it does not replace a voice changer by itself. Adding routing layers also adds places for the wrong device, feedback, or competing applications to cause trouble.

SteelSeries Sonar: processing and routing
SteelSeries Sonar is better understood as microphone processing and audio routing than as a full character-voice generator. Consider it for mic handling or gaming-audio presets, not as a substitute for a tool whose central job is changing your voice into a character.
NVIDIA Broadcast: clean up the microphone signal
NVIDIA Broadcast focuses on microphone cleanup, including noise and room-echo reduction, rather than cartoon, robot, or character transformations. It may complement a voice changer, but check current hardware and software requirements with NVIDIA.
OBS and plugins: flexible but unnecessarily complex for a call
OBS with audio plugins can suit a streamer who already builds an audio chain for recording or broadcasting. For an ordinary Discord call, it is usually more setup than necessary, with extra opportunities for monitoring loops and feedback. Confirm the complete input and output path before adding it to an otherwise working setup.

- Free with limitations: NCH explicitly describes Voxal’s free version as limited and for non-commercial home use. It is not the same as unrestricted commercial use.
- Free tier or plan not verified: Current Voicemod and Voice.ai limits are not established here. Check the relevant vendor’s current plan details rather than relying on old lists.
- Edition or trial terms not verified: Current MorphVOX and AV Voice Changer purchase terms are not established here. Check the vendor before downloading or paying.
Do not compare products on a “free” label alone. A free tier may restrict effects or access, while a home-use license may limit commercial use. Prices and plan terms can vary by region, billing period, tax, and promotion.

Why most mobile voice-effect apps are not Discord replacements
A mobile app that records your voice, applies an effect to a saved clip, and shares the file is not necessarily able to send altered microphone audio into a live Discord voice channel. iOS and Android also have different audio-routing and background-operation constraints. The old list’s recording and prank-call apps—including Voice Changer With Effects, RoboVox Voice Changer Pro, Best Voice Changer, Voice Changer for Android, Voice Changer Voice Recorder, Voice Changer, Voice Recorder & Editor, Live Voice Changer – Prank Call, and Voice Changer Plus—should not be ranked as live Discord choices without vendor-documented support and a reproducible routing method.
Similarly, AV Voice Changer and AV Voice Changer Software Diamond are names in the same product family, not sound evidence of two distinct top picks. For file editing, see the AV Voice Changer vendor page, but do not assume that an audio editor or recorder feeds a live Discord call.

- Install the app from its official vendor site. Avoid third-party mirrors. Start the changer before Discord if it installs a virtual audio device.
- Grant microphone permission if your operating system requests it, then choose your physical microphone inside the changer.
- Enable an effect and confirm the app is processing the microphone rather than only playing a preview.
- Open Discord’s User Settings → Voice & Video. Set Input Device to the changer’s virtual microphone, if it provides one. Choose the headset or speakers you actually use as the output device.
- Run Discord’s microphone test. The input meter should respond to the processed voice. If it responds only when the physical microphone is selected, Discord is bypassing the changer.
- Turn off monitoring unless you need sidetone. Hearing the processed microphone through both the changer and headset can create doubled audio or feedback.
- Adjust input sensitivity and suppression only if needed. If the effect gets cut off or sounds distorted, temporarily disable automatic sensitivity or noise suppression to identify whether Discord is removing the altered signal.
Discord’s desktop labels can change; consult the official Discord support hub if the current client differs.

Discord hears your normal voice
- Check that Discord’s input is the changer’s virtual microphone, not the physical mic.
- Confirm that the changer itself is listening to the correct physical microphone and that an effect is active.
- Close other apps that may be holding or redirecting the microphone, then restart Discord after installing or updating a virtual audio device.
- On Windows, check microphone privacy permissions. Test with one calling or recording app at a time before adding OBS, a game chat, or a mixer.
There is no audio or the input meter stays still
- Verify both ends of the route: the physical input in the changer and the virtual input in Discord.
- Check the operating system’s microphone permission and close competing applications.
- If using Voxal, do not confuse its preview playback device with Discord’s input. NCH’s documented preview path is Options → Preview Playback Device; the Discord input still needs to be set separately.
- If the changer has no virtual microphone, a routing utility such as Voicemeeter may be needed, but it adds setup complexity.
The voice sounds doubled or feeds back
Disable microphone monitoring in the changer first. Also check that Discord or the headset is not routing the microphone back to your ears or speakers through a second path.

The effect gets clipped, sounds robotic, or disappears
Heavily altered audio can be treated as noise by automatic input sensitivity or suppression. Temporarily disable those features to diagnose the issue, then adjust the threshold or suppression rather than leaving every filter off by default.
Bluetooth delay or a game conflict
Bluetooth can add noticeable monitoring and conversation delay; a wired headset or USB microphone is a useful diagnostic alternative for latency-sensitive calls. Some games may also behave unpredictably with virtual audio devices or audio software. Compatibility claims are not universal guarantees, so test the call before relying on the setup in a game session.
Privacy, impersonation, and responsible use
A changed voice does not make you anonymous: it does not conceal your Discord account, metadata, recordings, IP address, or recognizable behavior. AI voice tools deserve extra care because they may imitate identifiable people and may involve accounts, voice uploads, or cloud processing. Review each vendor’s current privacy terms and permissions; popularity alone does not establish that a product is safe or private.
Voice changing is a neutral capability, but using it for impersonation, fraud, harassment, evading moderation, or deceptive calls may violate laws, platform rules, or community policies.
