Best Way to Keep a YouTube Live Showroom Stream Running From a Spare PC

Use OBS to loop a prerecorded showroom video and send it to YouTube Live from a spare PC. This guide covers stream keys, settings, upload headroom, testing, reconnects, and alternatives.

For a spare-PC setup, use OBS to loop a prerecorded showroom video, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, and make sure the PC, network, and monitoring plan can support a long session. The loop keeps the showroom content playing; it does not keep the encoder connected if the computer loses power, the internet drops, or YouTube ends the stream. Test the whole setup before relying on it.

What you need for a spare-PC showroom stream

  • A video file, or a playlist of showroom videos, that you have the right to stream.
  • OBS Studio and, if you want to use its VLC playlist source, VLC installed in the same architecture as OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen bitrate, and a PC that can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate.
  • A way to monitor stream health and check the physical PC periodically.

A prerecorded loop is appropriate when the showroom should display a fixed sequence of content. If the stream needs to show a live camera or changing display, use a live capture source instead; looping a video cannot provide a live view.

Set up YouTube and OBS

1. Create an encoder stream in YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, description, privacy, and other metadata before going live.
  2. Choose the encoder setup and copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server information if OBS prompts for them. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to the stream. Keep it private and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.

YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets an encoder send video to the channel. Keep the Live Control Room open for preview and stream-health messages. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.

2. Make a looping OBS scene

  1. In OBS, add a scene for the showroom output.
  2. Select Sources > + > Media Source, create or choose a source, and browse to the video file.
  3. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Confirm the video restarts at its beginning when it reaches the end.
  4. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, choose the files in order, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents that this option is enabled by default. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed; match its 32- or 64-bit architecture to OBS.
  5. Check framing, playback, and audio in the OBS preview. Mute audio if it is not intended, and verify that every item in a playlist plays as expected.

OBS’s Media Sources guide covers Media Source and VLC Video source behavior.

Choose video, frame rate, and bitrate the PC can sustain

There is no universally best output setting for an unspecified spare PC or internet connection. A simple scene at a tested resolution and frame rate is generally a safer starting point than maximizing settings the machine or connection cannot sustain. OBS notes that meeting basic operating-system or GPU compatibility does not guarantee that a particular encoder, scene, resolution, and frame rate will perform adequately.

  • Encoder and format: YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS transport and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, subject to encoder and workflow support.
  • Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends for its listed live encoder configurations.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate: Use YouTube’s table for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec as a starting point, then test the actual feed. A higher bitrate uses more upload bandwidth and may increase the load on the PC.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Choose values the PC can encode reliably and the connection can upload with headroom. Lower them if OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, or if YouTube reports an unstable feed.

Settings and supported combinations can change, so check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance rather than treating a bitrate as a guarantee.

Give the network upload headroom

YouTube recommends keeping available upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. If using primary and backup streams, count both bitrates when estimating the required capacity. The connection must be stable as well as fast enough: YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream. YouTube’s streaming tips explain this bandwidth guidance.

If Ethernet is practical, connect the spare PC by cable rather than relying on Wi-Fi. Ethernet is an option, not a YouTube requirement, and it cannot fix an unstable internet service. A suitable cable is only one part of the connection path.

Test before leaving the showroom feed unattended

  1. Use the same video or playlist, OBS scene, audio, output settings, PC, and network planned for the real stream.
  2. Configure the encoder well ahead of the start. YouTube recommends configuring at least two hours before an event and starting at least 15 minutes early.
  3. Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the public watch page displays the expected picture and sound.
  4. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding warnings and Live Control Room for stream-health messages. Check that the Media Source loops or that the playlist advances and returns to the beginning.
  5. If an archive matters, confirm that the stream appears in the channel’s video list after it ends. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer session will be saved.

OBS strongly recommends testing settings before the first stream. YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder setup guidance cover advance setup, preview, and monitoring.

Keep the encoder connected—and know what can still go wrong

A loop addresses content playback, not continuous service. A power interruption, PC failure, internet disruption, encoder overload, or YouTube-side interruption can still stop the feed. Enable OBS’s automatic reconnect option to help recover from some disconnects, but do not treat reconnection as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Watch YouTube stream health and periodically check the PC itself.

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Video freezes or frames drop Network instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health; verify upload stability and bandwidth headroom. Test a lower bitrate or output setting.
OBS reports rendering or encoding overload The PC cannot sustain the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity Simplify the scene or test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Repeat a realistic test before relying on the feed.
The stream disconnects Internet interruption, PC or power issue, or a platform-side interruption Enable OBS automatic reconnect, check the network and physical PC, and review Live Control Room messages. Reconnect can help with some faults but cannot guarantee uptime.
The picture or sound is wrong Incorrect source, file, framing, or audio configuration Check the OBS preview, source properties, playlist order, and audio meters before going live.
The video does not loop or a playlist will not load Loop setting is off, or VLC is missing or mismatched with OBS architecture Enable Loop for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video; install the matching VLC version and test each file.

Power, sleep, restart, and firmware settings depend on the specific operating system and PC. Check the current documentation for that machine rather than applying a universal setting. Plan to inspect the system periodically, especially if it is intended to run unattended.

Plan sessions and archives deliberately

YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. For a longer showroom broadcast, do not assume YouTube will save a complete archive. If a recording is important, plan a deliberate session length and a separate archive workflow, and verify the result after ending the stream. The 12-hour guidance concerns automatic archiving; it is not a promise that a spare PC or encoder will remain connected for that duration.
