Best Way to Loop Multiple MP4 Files on a 24/7 YouTube Livestream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fixed sequence of local MP4 files, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add the files in order, turn on Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off. OBS then sends the repeating playlist to YouTube while the computer, files, power, and internet connection remain available. If you do not want a home computer running, a cloud service such as StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos instead.

Choose a looping method

Method Best suited to Main trade-off
OBS Studio with VLC Video on a local computer Operators who want free local control, scenes, overlays, or direct supervision. The computer, media files, power, network, and encoder process must stay available.
StreamNeo cloud streaming Operators who want uploaded videos to keep playing on YouTube without leaving a home computer on. Requires a service subscription after the free first day; check the service’s current terms and plan details.
FFmpeg on a server People comfortable with command-line setup and maintaining a server. You handle restarts, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Stream-copy looping can have timestamp issues at loop boundaries, so verify the output with your files.

The OBS playlist workflow is the practical local choice for multiple files in a specific order. OBS Media Source has a loop control for a single file; for a playlist, use VLC Video. OBS requires VLC to be installed for that source to appear, and its documentation advises matching the VLC architecture to OBS—for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources

Set up a repeating MP4 playlist with OBS

1. Enable YouTube live streaming and create the event

  1. Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
  2. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key private: it lets an encoder connect to the stream. YouTube encoder setup

2. Install VLC and build the playlist scene

  1. Install VLC in the same bitness as OBS. Restart OBS if necessary so it can detect VLC.
  2. In OBS, create or select a scene, then use Sources → + → VLC Video.
  3. Add the MP4 files in the sequence you want. Turn on Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable order. Confirm the playlist displays and advances before going live. OBS Media Sources

3. Connect OBS to the YouTube event

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available, or choose a custom server and enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not share or publish the key.
  2. Check that the VLC source’s audio is not muted and that the OBS audio meters move during playback. Make sure the intended video fills the canvas as expected; mixed aspect ratios may show bars or cropping depending on your scene layout.

4. Set output for the source and connection

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send, rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS when available. Its currently published H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; the recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. Those figures are specific to the stated format—other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different recommendations. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the full table.

Choose a bitrate your sustained upload connection can support, with room for normal variation. YouTube recommends testing the connection and sending a test with both audio and movement before relying on the stream. Do not upscale a low-resolution source just to match a higher output setting; choose an output format that suits the files and your available upload capacity.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

5. Start the stream and verify a full playlist cycle

  1. Start streaming in OBS and open the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Confirm that YouTube receives both picture and sound and check the stream-health status before treating the setup as ready.
  3. Watch the transitions between files and at least one full playlist cycle. Check for black frames, missing audio, unexpected aspect-ratio changes, or playback failures. Recheck health after changing the playlist, and keep backup media available.

Keep the playlist online—and understand the limits

With OBS on a local PC, the entire playback chain depends on that machine and its connection: sleep, shutdown, power loss, internet interruption, or an OBS failure can stop the feed. A server running FFmpeg moves playback off a home PC but still leaves you responsible for server uptime, process recovery, and monitoring. A managed cloud encoder shifts those operational dependencies to the provider; check its costs, upload workflow, limits, and current features directly. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded video, but that listing is not an independent reliability comparison. YouTube verified live encoders

Protect rights, stream keys, and archives

  • Stream only video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast. The scope of a license depends on its terms; this setup guide does not determine whether a particular license covers a particular stream.
  • Treat the YouTube stream key like a password. Anyone with access to it may be able to connect an encoder to the event. YouTube encoder setup
  • YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That rule does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will produce a complete day-long replay. If a complete archive matters, check current YouTube behavior and plan separate recordings or shorter segments. YouTube encoder setup
  • YouTube says monetized livestreams can use ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. A continuous loop by itself does not establish eligibility for monetization; check the current channel and content requirements. YouTube monetization during live streams

Troubleshoot common playlist problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source menu VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then restart OBS.
The playlist does not repeat or plays in the wrong order Loop Playlist is off, or Shuffle Playlist is on. Open the VLC Video source properties, enable Loop Playlist, and disable Shuffle for a fixed sequence.
YouTube does not show a picture or sound OBS may not be sending the event’s feed, or the source/audio may be misconfigured. Verify the server URL and private key in OBS, check source playback and audio meters, then confirm the preview and health in Live Control Room.
Stream health is poor or the feed drops The chosen output may exceed sustainable upload capacity, or the local connection/process may be unstable. Run a speed test, use a bitrate appropriate to the format and connection, and verify CBR, keyframe interval, and RTMPS settings against YouTube’s current guidance.
Files show black frames, silence, or awkward transitions Files may differ in codec, frame rate, aspect ratio, or audio layout, or a file may be damaged. Play each file locally, review transitions and a full cycle, and replace or normalize files that fail in the playlist.
