Use two layers: YouTube Studio schedules and starts the live broadcast; a playout calendar decides which prerecorded video or playlist plays in each time block. YouTube’s scheduler does not, by itself, create a recurring rotation of media inside a continuous stream. For a custom setup, Google’s Live Streaming API likewise manages broadcasts and incoming streams, while a separate playout system supplies the changing content.
What schedules the stream—and what schedules the videos?
- YouTube Studio / Live Control Room creates or schedules the broadcast and connects the encoder using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow is to wait for the preview and select Go live. Scheduling also lets creators promote the stream and viewers receive reminders. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- A playout calendar selects what viewers see at each time: a video, playlist, or other configured media. A hosted example, playout.video’s calendar guide, documents recurring blocks, loop or play-once behavior, and fallback content. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent reliability assessment.
In Google’s API terminology, a liveBroadcast is the event that becomes a YouTube video, while a liveStream describes the incoming audio-video feed settings. Google says a stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. Its 24/7 example keeps one broadcast live while a separate, overlapping broadcast is used for an interview within the ongoing feed; completing the interview broadcast does not stop the continuous one. The API resource model does not itself describe a recurring media-block calendar, so custom API work still needs a playout mechanism.
Plan the rotation before you connect it
- Prepare the assets. Use video you have permission to stream, and give files consistent names that make their intended time block clear. Organizing assets this way is a practical setup recommendation, not a feature supplied by YouTube.
- Choose the schedule’s time zone. Write recurring start times and durations explicitly so the intended rotation is clear to anyone maintaining it.
- Define each block. For each slot, identify its start time, duration, video or playlist, and whether it should loop to fill the slot or play once. Calendar documentation from playout.video describes both loop and play-once options.
- Decide what fills gaps. Configure a fallback playlist, a single standby video, or an intentional slate for unscheduled time. The playout.video calendar guide documents fallback choices including a playlist, video, or black slate.
- Plan special events. Decide whether an event replaces the normal block or should appear as a separate broadcast within the continuous feed. Google’s API example documents the latter pattern for an interview.
- Connect the playout output to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the interface and connection steps.
- Check the preview and output. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for YouTube’s preview and select Go live when ready. After changing the calendar or content, verify what the playout system is sending and what appears in YouTube’s stream preview.
- Decide how to handle archives. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not assume that this statement guarantees an automatic archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast; plan how you will preserve any programming that must remain available.
Choose a way to run the playout
Cloud calendar for recurring blocks
A hosted playout service is a practical option when you want to define a recurring calendar without maintaining the playback computer or server yourself. For example, playout.video says calendar changes made during a live stream take effect at the next slot transition and that the calendar preserves progress across restarts. Those are the vendor’s claims; they are not independently verified uptime results. Check that the service’s current controls match your needs for recurrence, loop versus play-once behavior, gap handling, and event interruptions.
OneStream Live’s documented 24/7 feature
OneStream Live’s 24/7 streaming help page, updated September 3, 2026, says its feature is exclusive to YouTube, requires an Enterprise plan, and allows a maximum duration of 30 days. It documents selecting videos from a device, its library, or cloud storage and scheduling a 24-hour YouTube stream. Confirm the current plan requirement and duration limit with the vendor before purchasing; the page is product documentation, not an independent comparison.

Custom API integration
Use the YouTube Live Streaming API to create broadcasts, bind them to streams, and manage broadcast state, while a separate system handles timed media changes. This approach is suited to a custom workflow, but the API’s broadcast and stream resources do not provide the recurring content calendar described above. Google’s API reference documents the available resource methods.
Local encoder and automation
A local encoder can give you direct control over playback and automation. In exchange, you are responsible for the host computer, source files, power, network connection, and restart behavior. That list follows from running the encoder locally; it is not a quantified reliability or cost comparison. YouTube’s encoder guide supports software or hardware encoder workflows and explains how to supply the stream URL and key.

Check the schedule and operational limits
- Calendar behavior: Verify recurrence, time zone, slot transitions, loop or play-once settings, and what happens when a slot ends without another item scheduled.
- Recovery and edits: Confirm what the service does if playback or the YouTube connection is interrupted, and when changes take effect. Treat vendor statements about recovery or preserved progress as claims to check in current documentation and terms.
- Duration and plan: Confirm the maximum scheduled run and which plan includes the feature. OneStream Live’s September 3, 2026 help page states a 30-day maximum and Enterprise requirement for its documented 24/7 feature.
- Broadcast state: Check YouTube’s preview and the broadcast’s live state after setup or a significant change. The official setup workflow includes reviewing the preview before manually starting a scheduled broadcast.
- Archive expectations: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it is not a guarantee of an archive for a 24/7 feed.
- Rights and channel policies: Use content you have rights to stream and consider YouTube’s copyright and channel rules before building a rotation. A schedule does not grant permission to use music, gameplay footage, or other material.
Troubleshoot common scheduling problems
The right video does not start at the expected time
Check the schedule time zone, recurrence, start time, and duration in the playout calendar. Also verify whether the current item is configured to loop or play once; those settings affect when a slot advances.
A gap appears between blocks
Check whether a fallback item is configured and whether the preceding slot’s duration leaves unscheduled time. A fallback playlist, standby video, or intentional slate can cover gaps where the calendar supports it.

YouTube shows no incoming preview
Check that the encoder is pointed at the YouTube server URL and uses the correct stream key, then inspect the encoder connection and YouTube Live Control Room preview. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
The broadcast is scheduled but viewers cannot watch it live
Review the scheduled stream in Live Control Room, confirm the encoder is sending the feed, and follow YouTube’s preview-then-Go live workflow for scheduled broadcasts. A scheduled event and an active outgoing feed are separate parts of the setup.

A 24/7 stream does not produce the archive you expected
Do not infer archive behavior for a continuous stream from YouTube’s guidance for streams under 12 hours. If you need a durable copy, arrange a separate preservation process rather than relying on an unstated guarantee.
