For an unnamed trilogy, there is no single best way to play it on PS5: the right choice depends on whether each game is compatible, which editions are available in your region, and whether you want permanent access or a subscription. Check all three games separately before buying. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games work on PS5, but there are exceptions.
First, check whether all three games work on your PS5
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, though some titles are exceptions and compatible games can occasionally show errors or unexpected behavior. Check each trilogy entry rather than assuming compatibility for the whole series. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guide explains how to check. The page does not state a publication year.

For every game, identify whether the copy on offer is a PS4 edition, a PS5 edition, or a bundle containing both. If you plan to use a PS4 version, confirm that specific game is compatible; if you want a PS5 version, check whether it is sold separately or offered as an upgrade.
Compare the three ways to get the games
| Option | What you get | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase | A license for the edition you buy; compatible PS4 and cross-generation purchases appear in your PlayStation library on PS4 and PS5. | Edition, compatibility, bundle contents, and any separate PS5 upgrade cost. |
| PS4 game discs | Play a compatible disc on a PS5 console with a disc drive. The disc must remain inserted each time you play. | That your console has a drive and that the title is compatible. A game update may be needed. |
| PlayStation Plus catalog | Access to eligible catalog games under the applicable plan; download and streaming options vary by plan and market. | That all three games are currently included in your region and available on your plan. Catalog titles can leave. |
Choose digital if you want a library copy
Sony says PlayStation Store purchases of PS4 and cross-generation games appear in the buyer’s library on PS4 and PS5. You can download a PS4 digital game to PS5 if it is compatible. Before checkout, compare the PS4 edition, PS5 edition, and any bundle: the name alone may not tell you which version or extras are included.

If a PS4 game has an optional PS5 upgrade, that can change the total cost. Check the specific offer and its eligibility before buying; upgrade availability and price vary by title.
Choose discs only if your console can read them
A compatible PS4 game disc works on a PS5 with a disc drive. Sony says the disc has to be inserted each time you play, and the game may require an update. A PS4 disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition sold without a disc drive.

Could an add-on drive work with your console?
Sony sells a separate disc drive for PS5 Digital Edition slim model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, and for PS5 Pro. Sony’s US product page says an internet connection is needed to pair the drive during setup. It is not a universal fit for every Digital Edition, so check the exact model number before purchasing. See Sony’s disc drive compatibility and setup information.
The same US product page states that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase in digital format only, while discs for games released before then can continue to be played on the console. This is a forward-looking policy notice; check Sony’s current product information when making a later purchase.

Check PS4-to-PS5 upgrades game by game
Some PS4 titles offer an upgrade to a digital PS5 version. Sony says an upgrade may be free or paid, and availability can be limited. For a disc-based PS4 copy, you need a PS5 with a disc drive; the disc must be inserted to redeem or use the upgrade. Confirm the publisher’s terms for each trilogy entry using Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade guide.
Use PlayStation Plus only if the catalog has all three
A subscription can be convenient if every game you want is currently in the PlayStation Plus catalog for your region and plan. Sony describes downloadable catalog games for Extra and Premium/Deluxe on PS5, while streaming options vary by plan and market. Catalog membership can change, so verify each title before subscribing or relying on continued access.

- Find the exact game listing in your regional PlayStation Store or the publisher’s edition information.
- Record whether it is PS4, PS5, or cross-generation, and what the bundle includes.
- If buying a PS4 edition, confirm PS5 compatibility using Sony’s support guide.
- Compare digital and disc availability, and check whether an upgrade exists, its price and eligibility, and any disc requirement.
- Search the current PlayStation Plus catalog in your region and confirm the required tier for each game.
- Compare the total cost for all three games against how long you expect to play them, and account for whether you want a lasting purchase, a physical copy, or catalog access.
These checks matter because the trilogy and your region are unspecified: no particular bundle, upgrade, PS Plus inclusion, or overall cheapest option can be confirmed without the three game titles and your market.
