For a reliable general-purpose loadout in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, carry a sword for flexible thrusting and slashing, plus a mace or hammer for heavily armored enemies. There is no best weapon type for every fight: armor, reach, handling, Henry’s stats, weapon quality and condition all affect what works. The recommendations below reflect guides updated in September 2026; one says it was verified for patch 1.5.6, released in June 2026.
How to choose the right weapon type
Start with the target, not the largest damage number on a weapon’s stat card. The guides distinguish stab, slash and blunt damage, which do not perform equally against armor. Swords are versatile; blunt weapons are the more specialized answer to heavily armored opponents. Axes sit between those roles, while polearms and ranged weapons trade close-quarters convenience for reach or an attack before an enemy closes.

These are practical role-based comparisons, not results from a common controlled test. INARA’s overview of weapon and damage types explains the distinctions at Weapon and damage types | Kingdom Come 2.
What each weapon type is good for
| Weapon type | Best use | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Sword or shortsword | Flexible thrusting and slashing; a shortsword can be paired with a shield. | Less suited than blunt weapons to heavily armored targets. |
| Longsword | Two-handed reach and damage, especially for duels or a sword-focused build. | Holding it in both hands means giving up a shield; requirements and the fight still matter. |
| Mace or hammer | Blunt damage against heavily armored enemies. | Typically shorter-ranged, with weaker relative performance against light armor; heavy attacks can consume substantial stamina. |
| Axe | A mixed slash-and-blunt option when you want damage of more than one type. | Less specialized than a sword or dedicated blunt weapon; compare the specific weapon’s damage and speed. |
| Polearm | Reach in open spaces, including when facing multiple threats. | Awkward in tight spaces and may call for stronger attributes. |
| Bow | Repeated ranged attacks. | Needs relevant skill, suitable strength and arrows; the cited database describes it as less effective against heavy armor. |
| Crossbow | A powerful shot before enemies reach you. | Slow reload makes a safe opening important. |
| Handgonne | A high-impact opening shot in the current guide’s loadout advice. | Reloading under pressure is slow. |
The category tradeoffs are drawn from HowToPlayHub’s KCD2 Best Weapons Guide — Top Swords, Maces & More and INARA’s weapon and damage type overview. Individual weapons can vary in speed, reach and stat requirements, so the category is only a starting point.

Is a sword or mace better in KCD2?
Neither is better in every encounter. Use a sword as the more flexible choice for thrusting and slashing; switch to a mace or hammer when facing heavily armored foes, where blunt damage is the more useful specialization. If you are choosing just one weapon, consider which enemies you face most and whether its requirements match Henry’s attributes. A sword and blunt backup cover more situations than expecting one weapon type to excel at all of them.
Examples of notable weapons and their reported stats
The September 2026 kcd2.org guide lists the following maximum-quality examples. These figures are guide-reported stat values, not guaranteed stats for every copy, and should not be treated as a controlled comparison across weapon types.
| Weapon | Role | Reported maximum-quality figure |
|---|---|---|
| Henry’s sword reforged | Endgame all-round longsword | 169 stab, 161 slash, 299 defense |
| Sword of Sir Valentine | One-handed sword | 135 stab, 142 slash, 242 defense |
| Ramhead hammer | Blunt weapon for armored targets | 154 blunt |
| Knight’s axe | Mixed-damage heavy weapon | 40 stab, 129 slash, 64 blunt |
| Ash longbow | Sustained ranged use | 230 power |
| Reinforced heavy crossbow | High-power opening shot | 550 power |
Those examples and figures come from kcd2.org’s KCD2 Weapons Guide: Best Picks for Every Fight. A separate HowToPlayHub guide reports the Basilard at gold quality as 134 stab, 141 slash and 21 blunt, and names Peter of Suchotlesky’s Sword as a quest reward with stronger short-sword performance at the same tier. These are that guide’s figures, not independently verified values on a shared comparison setup.
Do not assume a listed maximum-quality value is what you will find, craft or use immediately. Lower quality, wear, durability, requirements and relevant perks can change practical performance. Also distinguish base-game recommendations from expansion gear: kcd2.org identifies Lingua belli as DLC equipment.

When ranged weapons make more sense
Choose a bow for follow-up shots
The September guide characterizes bows as faster for successive shots than crossbows. They are a better fit when you can keep range and have the skill, strength and arrows to use one effectively; the cited damage overview cautions that bows are less effective against heavy armor.
Choose a crossbow for a stronger opening
Crossbows trade a slower reload for a stronger shot per attack. They are most useful when you can fire before enemies close and have enough safety to reload. The kcd2.org guide also recommends the handgonne as a high-impact opener, but its slow reload makes it a poor weapon to rely on while under pressure.
A practical loadout decision
- For general travel and mixed encounters: use a sword that suits Henry’s stats, with a mace or hammer as a backup for armored enemies.
- For a longsword-focused build: use the longsword’s reach and damage in fights where you can manage without a shield.
- For open ground or several threats: consider a polearm if its handling and attribute demands suit your character.
- For an opening at range: choose a bow if you value successive shots, or a crossbow or handgonne if you can make a powerful shot and reload safely.
- Before committing to a weapon: check its damage profile, requirements, condition and quality rather than relying on its name or a top-quality figure from a guide.
These recommendations summarize the September 2026 guides, including HowToPlayHub’s note that it was verified for patch 1.5.6 (June 2026). Weapon rankings and access routes can change with patches, progression and DLC.
