Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara is the clearest match for a classic brawler format in this group; Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors are standout action games, but they play very differently. This ranking is an editorial guide, not a universal all-time consensus.
How these Wii U games fit the beat-’em-up label
“Beat ’em up” is often used broadly in searches for games built around fighting groups of enemies. Traditionally, the label suggests direct, brawler-style combat, often in scrolling stages. The Wii U’s strongest adjacent choices stretch beyond that format: character-action emphasizes expressive combos, musou games stage huge battlefield fights, and squad-action asks you to command a team. The distinctions below are part of the recommendation, not fine print.
The best Wii U beat-’em-ups and adjacent action games
1. Bayonetta 2 — best stylish character-action pick
Bayonetta 2 is the choice for players who want combat depth and expressive execution rather than a conventional side-scrolling brawl. Its fights are built around combos and tactical responses to enemies and the environment. Nintendo lists both Classic and Touch control options for the Wii U version, giving players different ways to handle its action. Nintendo’s Bayonetta 2 page describes the game and controls, while TIME’s 2014 recommendation discusses its combat and tactical puzzles.
Best for: players who want a demanding, stylish action game and are comfortable with a character-action game rather than a classic brawler.

2. Hyrule Warriors — best fantasy crowd-combat pick
Hyrule Warriors combines Dynasty Warriors-style combat with The Legend of Zelda setting and characters, as Nintendo’s official page explains. Expect large-scale battlefield fights against many enemies, not the tighter lane-based structure associated with traditional beat-’em-ups. It is the strongest fit here for players who want crowd combat wrapped in a familiar fantasy world.
Best for: fans of large battles and Zelda’s world who want action at a broader scale than a standard brawler.

3. Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara — closest traditional brawler fit
Among the catalog examples covered here, Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara is the clearest match for readers looking for a conventional beat-’em-up. The Wii U game catalog classifies it as both a beat-’em-up and an action RPG. That genre label comes from a secondary catalog rather than the game’s primary documentation, so treat it as a useful classification, not a detailed account of every mechanic. MobyGames’ catalog entry provides the classification.
Best for: anyone whose priority is a brawler-style game rather than an adjacent action subgenre.

4. Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition — best brawler-platformer hybrid
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition mixes platforming and exploration with combat. The game catalog lists it as both a platformer and a beat-’em-up, so it is better understood as a hybrid than as a pure brawler. Choose it if you want movement and exploration alongside fights, rather than an experience centered only on battling through crowds. The genre classification is from MobyGames’ catalog entry.
Best for: players who enjoy platforming and exploration as much as combat.

5. The Wonderful 101 — best squad-action wildcard
The Wonderful 101 is not a one-hero brawler: you command a superhero squad. Nintendo says the Wii U version uses the GamePad’s second screen for puzzles and exploration, and its Wonderful Missions support up to five players. Those features make it a distinctive squad-action pick rather than a straightforward beat-’em-up. See Nintendo’s The Wonderful 101 page for the Wii U version’s details.
Best for: players curious about a team-command action game and Wii U-specific GamePad use.

6. Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper — another musou option
Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper is another large-scale musou choice, distinct from Hyrule Warriors. Nintendo’s 2012 software lineup lists it for Wii U in North America and Europe, establishing its release context in those regional lineups, not a comparative quality verdict. Nintendo’s 2012 Wii U software lineup is the reference for that regional listing.
Best for: players seeking another battlefield-scale option beyond Hyrule Warriors.
7. Warriors Orochi 2 Hyper — multiplayer and controller-focused option
Do not confuse Warriors Orochi 2 Hyper with Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper; they are separate titles. Nintendo Japan’s Wii U page for the second game lists online versus and co-op, custom scenario sharing, GamePad-only play and supported controllers. Those documented features make it a notable option for players interested in multiplayer and controller flexibility. The details are specific to the Japanese product page and should not be assumed to describe every regional edition. Nintendo Japan’s Warriors Orochi 2 Hyper page lists them.
Best for: players considering the Japanese Wii U edition for its listed online modes and controller options.
