It remasters the original campaign, which Xbox describes as a third-person cover-shooter, and supports split-screen or online co-op. For a later entry and a campaign that supports up to three players, choose Gears 5.
Xbox currently lists E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with an October 6, 2026 release date. Check the official listing for any change before planning around that date: Xbox: Gears of War: E-Day.
Which game should you play first?
Pick Gears of War: Reloaded if you want the most direct series connection: it is a remaster of the original game and returns you to the start of the campaign. Pick Gears 5 if you would rather play a later entry or want a campaign option for three players.
These are practical recommendations based on series connection and the official feature listings, not a claim that either game plays exactly like E-Day. The available official sources do not provide a like-for-like review comparison.

Gears of War: Reloaded — the closest series warm-up
Gears of War: Reloaded is the remastered original, optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Xbox classifies it as a third-person cover-shooter and lists the original campaign with split-screen and online campaign co-op.
Choose it if you want the original campaign
For a straightforward refresher on the series, this is the clearest place to begin: you can experience its first campaign rather than jump into a later installment. You can play solo, or team up locally or online through the listed co-op options.

Gears 5 — a later campaign with three-player co-op
Gears 5 is optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Its official Xbox listing supports campaign co-op for up to three players, either online or in split-screen.
Choose it if you want a later entry or a three-player session
It is the alternative for players who would rather visit a later point in the series than replay the original. Its listed three-player campaign co-op also makes it the better fit of these two if your group has three people.
