A cloud service removes the need to host the broadcast on your own computer, but you should still compare its current playlist support, update workflow, price and limits before choosing.
Choose between a local encoder and a cloud broadcaster
Local encoder: control in exchange for an always-on computer
YouTube supports going live with an encoder, including OBS. With this route, your computer generates the broadcast, so it must stay on and connected for the stream’s duration. You configure the encoder and can monitor its output directly; YouTube does not specify a special minimum computer model for this playlist use case. Test the setup before relying on it for a long broadcast, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event. Cloud broadcaster: remote playback from uploaded media

Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first
- Live access: YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days to enable live streaming. Check the current YouTube live-streaming requirements before setup.
- Platform rules: Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A 24/7 format does not create an exception.
- Music and video rights: You need authorization to broadcast the underlying recordings, compositions and video. Being able to play or upload a track does not establish that you have live-broadcast rights, and looping does not change that. A general music subscription should not be assumed to grant those rights.
Set up the local OBS workflow
This is the do-it-yourself route for creators who want the encoder running on their own computer. YouTube’s live pages can change, so confirm current labels and encoder settings in YouTube Studio and its official guidance when configuring the stream.
- Confirm eligibility and rights. Verify the channel, check that it has no live-stream restriction within the past 90 days, and clear broadcast rights for every item in the playlist.
- Prepare the playlist. Put the authorized audio and visuals into a repeatable sequence in OBS or another encoder workflow. Check that playback does not end unexpectedly and that transitions are suitable for a continuous broadcast.
- Create or schedule a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation flow, choose the encoder workflow, and obtain the stream key and server information shown for that stream. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the broadcast.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube or enter the server and stream key supplied by YouTube. Use RTMPS for a typical encoder setup when YouTube’s current instructions call for it. For bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval and audio encoding, follow the current YouTube encoder settings for the resolution you intend to send; do not assume an old preset is permanently correct.
- Test before the long run. Start a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Use representative movement and audio, check that the connection is stable, confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and sound, and review stream health before making the broadcast public.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and confirm the live preview and stream status in YouTube Studio. During the broadcast, keep the computer and network available and check stream health periodically. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a successful initial connection will remain healthy indefinitely.
When HLS is relevant
YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for compatible encoders, including OBS according to YouTube Help. It is a protocol option, not a requirement for every playlist stream. YouTube documents higher latency than RTMP for HLS and specific segment and playlist requirements; Google’s HLS ingestion documentation explains the media-playlist and segment model. Use YouTube’s current HLS setup instructions if you have a reason to choose it, rather than adding that configuration by default.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has not had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Review the eligibility status in YouTube Studio.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the selected server and stream key in OBS against the values shown in YouTube Studio. Confirm the encoder is connected to the network and that the stream key has not been replaced.
- The picture or sound is wrong: Compare OBS output with the current YouTube encoder settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Test with representative audio and motion before returning to a long broadcast.
- The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: Review YouTube stream health and the local computer’s internet connection. For a local setup, the host computer and connection must remain available; a cloud workflow avoids depending on a home computer as the broadcaster.
- A playlist item cannot be changed while live: Playlist editing differs by service. Check the provider’s documented live-update behavior before choosing a cloud broadcaster; Streamloop, for example, says its users can add or replace videos during a live playlist, but that is a vendor claim.
- A rights claim or restriction appears: Stop and review whether you are authorized to broadcast the recording, composition and video. A looping tool cannot grant those permissions or override YouTube’s policies.
Estimate the practical cost before choosing
A local setup has no special YouTube-mandated computer model in the cited guidance, but it does depend on a computer and network connection being available for the entire stream.
