For a second playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the most rewarding challenge rules change how you explore, fight, or solve problems—not just how slowly you progress. Try Pro HUD with limited fast travel for a more deliberate journey, add a healing or armor restriction for tougher combat, or limit a favorite ability or device category to make familiar puzzles feel new. These are player-made rules, not an official challenge mode, so choose a small set and define exceptions before starting.
Choose rules that change the way you play
Nintendo presents Tears of the Kingdom as a game built around experimentation with Link’s abilities and Zonai devices. Nintendo Australia puts it plainly: “Experimentation is at the heart of this adventure, and there are multiple ways to overcome problems you encounter while exploring Hyrule.” That makes a mechanics restriction a natural way to reshape a replay, while navigation and combat rules can adjust the journey’s pace and risk.
Community discussions suggest options such as Pro HUD, no fast travel, healing limits, armor limits, upgrade limits, and restrictions on sage abilities. They are individual suggestions, not an official list or a measured ranking of what makes a run best. Treat each as a modular rule you can combine with others.
Exploration rules: make Hyrule feel less guided
Use Pro HUD
Pro HUD reduces on-screen guidance, making it easier to rely on landmarks and your memory of the map. It is a low-friction place to start: it changes how you navigate without banning the game’s core tools. Players have mentioned Pro HUD as a replay choice.

Limit fast travel
A no-fast-travel rule makes journeys more deliberate, but a complete ban can become an unnecessary obstacle. Decide on an exception in advance—for example, allow travel only from specified points, or allow it when story progression would otherwise stall. Players suggest no-fast-travel runs as a personal challenge, not as a built-in setting.
Combat rules: make mistakes matter more
Restrict healing
Set a simple limit, such as no healing during combat or a small recovery allowance. Before the run, decide what counts as combat and when the restriction ends; a clear rule is easier to apply consistently than an improvised one. This is a community-suggested constraint, not a required or official way to play.
Wear lighter armor or skip upgrades
For a gentler combat challenge, ban armor upgrades. For a tougher one, restrict which armor you can wear. These are separate dials: choose the one that changes the difficulty you want without stacking restrictions by default.
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
Progression rules: trade upgrades for a different growth curve
You can limit heart or stamina upgrades to keep Link’s growth slower, but understand what that rule removes. Nintendo says four Light of Blessing items can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a heart container or a stamina vessel. Restricting upgrades therefore changes how you spend those rewards, not just your combat margin.

Choose an ability or class of Zonai devices to restrict, or require yourself to attempt a different solution before using a familiar construction. Keep an exception for situations where a story requirement depends on a restricted tool. Nintendo explicitly encourages experimentation with abilities and devices and notes that problems can have multiple solutions, so this kind of rule changes your approach without needing to ban every useful system.
In a Nintendo interview, developer Hidemaro Fujibayashi described the idea behind combining objects: “By showing these ideas, I proposed that if Link had the ability to attach things together, we could create this new kind of gameplay using materials we already had available.” A challenge that curbs your reliance on a familiar build can bring that problem-solving flexibility back into focus.
Rank #3
- The Legend of Zelda - Tears of the Kingdom
Build a challenge that fits your second run
| What you want to change | Rules to consider | What the rule puts in focus |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation friction | Pro HUD; limited fast travel | Reading landmarks and planning routes |
| Combat stakes | Healing limits; lighter armor or no armor upgrades | Risk management and preparation |
| Progression pace | Limit heart or stamina upgrades | Choosing how to spend Light of Blessings |
| Use of the game’s toolset | Restrict an ability or device category; try another solution first | Experimenting beyond familiar builds |
For a balanced run, combine one exploration rule with one combat rule. If you want a more dramatic change, add one mechanics restriction. That is a practical way to mix the rule types, not a tested formula or an official recommendation.
Set the boundaries before you begin
- Choose a small number of rules you can remember without consulting a checklist.
- State exceptions for required story progression or other situations where a restriction would block progress.
- Specify whether healing limits apply only during combat and where combat ends.
- Decide whether each rule applies for the whole run or only in selected regions.
- If you use a rule about upgrades, clarify whether it limits heart containers, stamina vessels, or both.
Compatible amiibo are optional, not a requirement for these challenges. Nintendo Support says they can be scanned after the in-game amiibo rune is unlocked; none of the rules above depends on using one.
