The BFG AGEIA PhysX card is a dedicated physics-processing add-in card from the mid-2000s, not a graphics card. It was designed to accelerate physics calculations in games built to use AGEIA’s hardware. Today, it is chiefly of interest to collectors and people restoring a compatible period PC: NVIDIA documents AGEIA PPU support only in older software for Windows XP and Vista.
What the BFG AGEIA PhysX card did
The card contained a physics processing unit (PPU) intended to handle some supported game-physics calculations separately from the CPU. It worked alongside the CPU and graphics card; it did not replace either one. The idea was to let compatible games simulate more complex interactions, but offloading calculations did not make the work disappear: added simulation could also increase demands on the rest of the system. A contemporary PC Perspective review from May 8, 2006 discusses both the intended offload and those system-level trade-offs: PC Perspective’s BFG AGEIA PhysX review.
Whether the card made a difference depended on the game’s support and on the complete PC configuration. It was not a general-purpose upgrade that improved every game or graphics workload.
Hardware fit in a period PC
PCI clearance
The PPU needed a vacant PCI expansion slot. That could be difficult to find in a system with large graphics cards: a May 8, 2006 bit-tech review found that 60% of the dual-graphics motherboards in its reviewed sample had only one free PCI slot with the tested two-card setup. This describes that review’s sample, not every motherboard. See bit-tech’s 2006 review.

- Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
- Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
- Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
- Memory Interface: 64-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
Auxiliary power
A 2007 installation tutorial lists an additional four-pin Molex power connector alongside the vacant PCI slot as a requirement: the PPU installation tutorial. Check the documentation for the exact card revision and the host system before buying or connecting a used unit; do not assume that a connector or board configuration is identical across every example.
AGEIA PPU support versus later PhysX software
These are separate hardware paths. An AGEIA card uses the old PPU driver path; later NVIDIA PhysX software describes acceleration on supported GeForce GPUs. Installing a newer PhysX package does not, by itself, show that an AGEIA card will work.

| Setup | Hardware path | Documented software boundary | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| AGEIA PPU in a period system | Dedicated PCI physics processor | NVIDIA’s PhysX System Software 9.14.0702 page directs AGEIA processor users to older software such as version 8.09.04, and documents PPU acceleration for SDK 2.8.1 or earlier on Windows XP and Windows Vista only. NVIDIA 9.14.0702 documentation | This is NVIDIA’s stated historical support boundary, not a guarantee that a particular game, card, or present-day system will work. |
| PhysX on a later supported GeForce GPU | GPU acceleration rather than an AGEIA PPU | NVIDIA’s PhysX System Software 9.21.0713, released October 15, 2021, describes GPU acceleration on supported GeForce GPUs. For games using SDK versions before 2.7.1, NVIDIA says the PhysX Legacy Installer is also needed. NVIDIA 9.21.0713 documentation | This newer runtime guidance does not establish support for the BFG AGEIA card itself. |
NVIDIA’s older driver page puts the PPU limit plainly: “AGEIA PPU acceleration support for 2.8.1 SDK or earlier, and Windows Vista and Windows XP only.” That statement is specific to AGEIA PPU acceleration; it should not be read as a promise of compatibility with every old title or current Windows installation.
The later NVIDIA page names older AGEIA-era games including Cell Factor, Clive Barker’s Jericho, Gears of War, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Switch Ball and Velvet Assassin. Its legacy-installer note concerns games using older SDK versions in the later software path; it does not mean those titles will use an AGEIA PPU on a modern PC.

Is a BFG AGEIA PhysX card worth buying now?
For a general modern gaming PC, no: its purpose and documented software support are tied to old hardware and operating systems. The more realistic reasons to seek one are collecting or restoring a period system whose motherboard, power setup, operating system and intended game support have all been verified.
- Before purchasing, confirm that the motherboard has an available, physically clear PCI slot and that the exact card revision’s power requirements can be met.
- Confirm the operating system, driver version and game’s AGEIA/SDK support for the specific build. NVIDIA’s documented PPU boundary is XP/Vista and SDK 2.8.1 or earlier.
- For a modern GeForce-based PhysX setup, follow the GeForce software and legacy-installer requirements for the game instead of treating the AGEIA card as interchangeable.
Condition and marketplace availability for used cards vary. A listing alone cannot confirm that a card works, includes the required power lead, or is compatible with a particular restoration.
