Black Myth: Wukong can be a visually striking action RPG with memorable boss fights and still feel too repetitive and thin between them to justify the scale of the argument around it. That is a judgment about what the game offers—not a claim that critics broadly disliked it, or that its controversy explains its sales.
What the game does—and where it falls short
Developed by Game Science and based on Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong launched on Aug. 19, 2024. It is listed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. Its appeal is easy to understand: imposing enemies, dramatic presentation, and boss encounters that reviewers have praised for their challenge and spectacle.

The weaker side of the experience is the connective tissue. Shannon Liao’s Aug. 29, 2024 Inverse opinion essay argues that spaces between major fights feel sparse and repetitive, with limited opportunities to explore. Her description is pointed: “The environments feel stale and small when you realize most doors stay glued shut and most walls aren’t climbable.” She also writes that “In between big bosses, the game doesn’t offer you any chance to reflect, rest, or enjoy the scenery.”
That criticism identifies the divide behind the “mediocre” verdict. If boss battles and visual spectacle are the main event, the game can be compelling. If exploration, a varied rhythm, and a clearly delivered story matter just as much, the stretches between those encounters can make the whole adventure feel less substantial than its presentation promises.

What the review scores say—and what they cannot
The broad critical response was favorable, not a consensus that the game was mediocre. In a Metacritic snapshot accessed Oct. 4, 2026, the PC version had an 81 Metascore from 87 critic reviews: 82% positive, 18% mixed, and 0% negative. The same page showed an 8.2 user score from 8,499 ratings. These figures are a dated snapshot, can change, and apply to the PC listing—not a platform-by-platform comparison.
The disagreement is visible in the review excerpts: some praise the combat encounters, challenge, graphics, and immersion; others point to limited exploration, repetition, pacing, or a lack of variety. The story can also be harder to follow without familiarity with Journey to the West; Liao additionally criticizes narrative confusion and rough translation for non-Chinese speakers. The aggregate captures the generally positive reception, but it does not settle whether the game’s quieter stretches work for a particular player.

For readers who want the strongest case in the game’s favor, the Metacritic page displays a Guardian review excerpt calling it “a fantastic game.” For the case against its reputation, Liao’s Inverse essay is explicitly opinion writing, not a neutral score summary. Read together, they show why a positive critical consensus and a sharply negative individual verdict can coexist.
What the “drama” refers to
The controversy is distinct from the game’s combat and level design. In a Sept. 4, 2024 report, Guardian journalist Keza MacDonald described IGN’s reporting on crude and vulgar public comments by some Game Science staff, as well as interviews with women about sexism in games and Chinese society. MacDonald also reported online attacks on IGN, including accusations that it was trying to sabotage the game.

The Guardian reported that guidelines sent to influencers with advance copies restricted discussion of subjects including Covid, the Chinese games industry, and “feminist propaganda.” Advance-copy conditions are common, MacDonald noted, but she described that last restriction as unusual. The article suggested the rules may have reflected China’s broader censorship environment; that was presented as a possibility, not established intent. It also reported that Game Science did not address the controversy when asked at a preview event.
Liao’s essay connects the game’s popularity to online conflict, nationalism, and anti-woke audiences. That is a proposed explanation, not a measured finding in the cited reporting. The controversy helps explain why the game became a culture-war symbol; the available sources do not show that the controversy caused its sales.

A breakout hit is not proof of a single explanation
The scale of the launch was striking. The Guardian reported that Game Science said the game sold 10 million copies in three days. The same Sept. 4, 2024 article reported more than one million people playing daily on Steam at that time. Those are historical, dated figures—not current sales or player totals.
Commercial success can coexist with uneven design, and it does not establish why each person bought the game. The documented appeal includes its visual presentation, boss encounters, and basis in a famous Chinese literary work. The reporting also documents a heated online response to the coverage and restrictions sent with influencer copies. Neither source measures how much any one factor contributed to sales.

Who is likely to agree that it is “too mediocre”?
The title’s verdict makes the most sense for someone who expects a richly explorable action RPG, a steady variety of activities, and a story that explains itself clearly. For that player, spectacular boss fights may not compensate for repetitive stretches or a narrative whose cultural and translation context can be difficult to follow.
Someone mainly seeking dramatic combat, demanding bosses, and strong visuals may reasonably reach the opposite verdict. The fairest conclusion is narrower: Black Myth: Wukong earned broadly favorable reviews and major commercial success, but its most celebrated strengths do not erase the weaknesses some players find in exploration, pacing, and narrative delivery. Calling it mediocre is a defensible opinion; treating that opinion as critical consensus—or treating controversy as the proven cause of its success—is not.
