Black Myth: Wukong is at its best when its staff combat, spell combinations and spectacular boss fights come together. Its art direction and cinematic presentation give those encounters real impact. But the levels between the major fights, limited enemy variety, forgettable gear progression and technical interruptions keep the experience from matching its highest points. That is the verdict of Windows Central reviewer Brendan Lowry—not a claim that every player will weigh those weaknesses the same way.
What is Black Myth: Wukong?
Black Myth: Wukong is a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West. You play as the Destined One, fighting with a staff and combining techniques, spells, abilities, weapons and equipment. The official PlayStation listing identifies the PS5 edition as a one-player game released August 20, 2024: PlayStation’s Black Myth: Wukong listing.

Its structure leans heavily on major boss encounters, with simpler levels and lesser enemies connecting the set pieces. Windows Central describes the combat as action-RPG fighting with Soulslike elements, rather than treating “Soulslike” as a complete description of the game.
What works best
Boss fights give the combat room to shine
The strongest encounters ask you to read an opponent, time your staff attacks and make use of spells and other abilities. Those options let fights feel varied rather than relying on one basic attack pattern. The bosses are the game’s clearest draw, and the staff combat, transformations and spell combinations give them spectacle as well as tactical texture.

A vivid world and cinematic presentation
Windows Central praises the visual effects, lighting, animations and environments, alongside the game’s dramatic cutscenes and Journey to the West-inspired world. The presentation helps make major encounters feel like events, and gives the adventure a strong sense of place.
What keeps it from being great
Weaker stretches between the highlights
Windows Central’s central reservation is that the levels and lesser encounters do not consistently match the quality of the bosses. The reviewer found the level design bland and enemy variety disappointing; TechRadar also noted that detailed environments can make navigation unclear without a map. These are editorial judgments, not flaws every player will consider equally important.

Gear progression adds little
Windows Central describes the loot system as superfluous. If you want a steady stream of meaningful equipment choices to shape a build, progression may feel less satisfying than the combat’s range of spells and abilities suggests.
Performance depends on platform and setup
In its Windows PC review, conducted through Steam with a code supplied by Game Science, Windows Central reported mostly 70–80 FPS on its test PC: an RTX 3070, Intel Core i5-12600K and 32 GB of RAM, at 3440×1440 on High with AMD Super Resolution and Frame Generation enabled. The reviewer also encountered occasional visual-effects-related drops into the twenties and some stutters. That is one reviewer’s experience on one configuration, not a guarantee of current performance on other hardware or after later updates.

PS5 concerns were different. Push Square’s launch-era review criticized performance mode for generated frames and input lag that, in its assessment, interfered with responsive dodges and attacks. That reflects the outlet’s assessment at launch; it should not be taken as a description of every patched build today. The cited PC and PS5 reviews are qualitative observations, not a controlled comparison.
Is Black Myth: Wukong worth playing?
It is a strong fit if you want demanding, visually striking boss encounters and enjoy experimenting with staff combat, spells and abilities. Its cinematic style and mythological setting are part of the appeal, too. It is a less certain match if you need consistently compelling exploration, a broad roster of lesser enemies or deep gear progression to sustain interest between major fights.

Platform is worth considering alongside those preferences. The PC review’s frame-rate observations apply to its specific test system; the PS5 review raised a separate launch-era concern about performance mode and input response. Consider your hardware and tolerance for frame pacing or responsiveness issues rather than treating either review as a benchmark for your own setup. Current regional availability and patch-specific performance are not established here, so check the relevant storefront and current build before making a time-sensitive platform decision.
