The controversial weapon missing from Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s announced launch lineup was the Riot Shield. It was an omission from the launch roster—not a documented post-release removal—and Activision did not give a reason for leaving it out.
Which weapon was missing from Black Ops 6?
It was the Riot Shield. Launch-period coverage identified the shield as the controversial item missing from the confirmed lineup. The distinction is important: Activision’s October 18, 2024 launch announcement did not include it among the weapons planned for launch. The available evidence does not show Treyarch removing it after release.

What weapons did Activision confirm for launch?
Activision’s October 18, 2024 launch article listed 33 armaments, including 12 new to the franchise. The roster comprised 25 primary weapons, six secondary weapons and two melee weapons: the Knife and Baseball Bat. The Riot Shield was not among them.
Why was the Riot Shield controversial?
Coverage at launch described the shield’s defensive use: it could block incoming fire, and players could carry it on their backs to protect themselves from attacks behind them, a tactic commonly called “turtling.” Critics argued that this encouraged corner defense and slowed match pace. Those are critical opinions about gameplay, not a measured finding about balance or an official explanation from Treyarch.

Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
Views were not unanimous. Some players valued the shield and regarded using it effectively as a skill. Publications called it controversial, but the available reporting does not establish how representative those opinions were among the player base.
Did Activision explain why it was left out?
No reason appears in the official launch roster, and the reviewed coverage did not provide a named developer or spokesperson explaining the omission. The lineup confirms what was announced for launch, not the thinking behind the decision.

Was the Riot Shield added later?
Activision’s September 3, 2025 Season 05 notes show that the game continued to receive updates and added armaments. Those notes do not establish that the Riot Shield returned, and they do not prove it remained absent from every mode or update. The launch-roster reporting alone cannot settle its later status.
