Black Ops 6 Zombies is a round-based cooperative mode for up to four players. You survive escalating waves, explore a map, spend Essence to open routes and improve equipment, collect Salvage for Arsenal upgrades, and pursue objectives or a Main Quest. This guide explains the six maps listed in the official Black Ops 6 guide index, the resource and upgrade systems, GobbleGums, and Directed Mode.
How do you play Black Ops 6 Zombies?
Each match combines survival with exploration and objectives. Zombies arrive in rounds, and the spaces, doors, stations and objectives you discover determine how you prepare for later waves. You can play alone or with up to three additional teammates, for a maximum squad of four.
- Survive the current round: defeat the incoming undead and manage ammunition, armor and positioning.
- Earn and spend resources: kills provide Essence, while Salvage supports Arsenal purchases.
- Open the map: use Essence to unlock routes and reach equipment, perks and objectives.
- Improve your loadout: buy Perk-a-Colas, upgrade weapons with Pack-a-Punch and use Salvage for effects such as Ammo Mods.
- Choose your goal: continue an open-ended survival run or work through the map’s Main Quest.
The publisher’s launch overview described Terminus as a prison-island escape involving exploration, objectives and waves of undead. That description captures the basic structure of the mode, although exact balance values can change with later updates.

What maps are in Black Ops 6 Zombies?
The official guide index lists six Zombies maps. The index associates Citadelle des Morts with Season 1, The Tomb with Season 2, Shattered Veil with Season 3 and Reckoning with Season 5. This is the guide index’s roster; it should not be read as confirmation that every map is in every current playlist.

The Ray Gun is also named as a shared Wonder Weapon in the official launch-preparation recap. Wonder Weapon availability, quest steps and route efficiency are not interchangeable between maps, so use the map-specific objective information rather than assuming one universal opening.
What do Essence and Salvage do?
Essence
Essence is the points currency earned by killing zombies. Spend it to open routes, buy Perk-a-Colas and upgrade weapons with Pack-a-Punch. Opening a route can be as important as buying damage: it gives access to safer movement paths, objectives and upgrade stations.
Salvage
Salvage is a separate resource used at the Arsenal. The official overview specifically identifies Ammo Mods and other weapon effects as Salvage-supported upgrades. Do not treat Salvage as a second form of Essence; each resource serves a different set of decisions.

A practical spending rule
- Use Essence when a locked route, perk or Pack-a-Punch access directly improves your next rounds.
- Reserve Salvage for the Arsenal upgrades that match your weapon and the enemies you are facing.
- Do not follow a single “correct” purchase order. The best sequence depends on the map route, your squad, whether you are learning a quest and whether your priority is survival or objective progress.
How do perks, Augments and Ammo Mods differ?
Perk-a-Colas
Perk-a-Colas grant persistent abilities during the match. They are purchased with Essence and form the foundation of a build: choose them according to whether you need survivability, mobility, information or weapon support.
Augments
Augments modify selected systems. They are not another name for perks; they change how a chosen system behaves and should be planned around the build you want to use.
Ammo Mods
Ammo Mods apply special effects to weapons. They are obtained through the Arsenal using Salvage and can complement a weapon’s role or help against particular enemy situations.

These systems interact, but they are not interchangeable. Exact numerical effects and costs may change in patches, so consult current official update information before relying on a specific value.
What are GobbleGums and how does their pack work?
GobbleGums are consumable bonuses that can be earned through play. You prepare a GobbleGum pack, use items during a match and can switch the active pack while playing. Unused GobbleGums carry between matches.
- They are consumable bonuses, not permanent weapon upgrades.
- They cannot be dropped or shared with teammates.
- You can change the pack in a match, allowing your available bonuses to fit the situation.
- Unused GobbleGums remain available for a later match.
Because the pack is a limited set of consumables, use it to support a specific plan—learning an objective, recovering from a difficult round or extending a survival run—rather than treating every item as a passive perk.

What is Directed Mode?
Directed Mode is a quest-learning option that guides players from objective to objective while limiting round progression. The official Shattered Veil guide documents its implementation on that map: the round ceiling remains at Round 15 until the Main Quest is complete.
That Round 15 limit is specifically documented for Shattered Veil. Do not assume the same ceiling or identical prompts apply to Terminus, Liberty Falls, Citadelle des Morts, The Tomb or Reckoning without checking the relevant official guide.

When to use it
- Choose Directed Mode when you want the Main Quest presented in a defined sequence.
- Use standard round-based play when you want unrestricted round progression and a more open survival run.
- Expect map-specific instructions: Directed Mode is a framework for guidance, not a universal replacement for learning the map’s mechanics.
Choosing a map for your first matches
If you want to learn the basic loop
Start with a launch map such as Terminus or Liberty Falls. Both are covered by the launch-era official material, and each has a named Wonder Weapon in the publisher’s recap. Focus on opening routes, finding the Arsenal and Pack-a-Punch, and learning how Essence and Salvage are spent before attempting a long quest run.

If you want a guided quest lesson
Use Directed Mode where the current official map guide documents it. Shattered Veil is the map for which the supplied official guide explicitly describes objective prompts and the Round 15 ceiling.
If you want to explore later content
Citadelle des Morts, The Tomb, Shattered Veil and Reckoning are listed in the official index with their respective season associations. Their settings and mechanics differ, so select one based on the objective guide and features you want to learn rather than assuming a universal difficulty ranking.
A simple preparation checklist
- Confirm the map and mode before loading in.
- Decide whether the run is for survival, exploration or Main Quest progress.
- Identify your first route-opening purchases with Essence.
- Plan when you will reach Pack-a-Punch and the Arsenal.
- Choose a GobbleGum pack that supports the run’s goal.
- Coordinate roles with teammates instead of duplicating every purchase.
- Check current official patch or map information before relying on exact costs, effects or quest steps.
Which physical edition works on your platform?
Activision documents physical editions for Xbox and PlayStation. The physical PS5 edition is PS5-only; it will not work on a digital-only PS5. Physical copies also will not work on Xbox Series S. Activision lists the PC Standard Edition as digital-only. Confirm the platform label and current retailer availability before buying, because stock and listings change.
